Absolutely the best customer service and most straight forward, up front automotive shop I've ever dealt with. Had my car inspected by a different shop but they weren't able to reset my car's internal inspection reminder due it being a non-American car company. I called Tom's and explained the situation and they were able to fit me in for a same day appointment, I showed up, asked a few questions and was given very helpful information, and then they reset the reminder free of charge! I was quoted $30-$40 from other European car shops in town for the same service, I could not be happier, fresh out of an overnight shift at my job and they made my entire week 5x better in just 15 minutes. read more

There's more parking spots for employees than customers. As a travellor how am I supposed to stop at the travel stop when all the parking spots are marked for employees. That makes no sense at all....why make a dog park if all the employee parking is in front of it. I'm disabled and this makes no sense read more

Dropped my car off for a diagnosis and they claimed there was tons of stuff needing done and when I told them to service it I got it back in worse condition, they were saying that it was normal for it to be running worse and the engine would "reset". It looked like they barely touched it and they overcharged me for their standard labor rates and parts!!! 36.30 each for spark plugs? I went to a different place for a second opinion and it was fixed the same day I got it back from Tom's auto. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!! SCAM!! Better Business bureau is hearing about this $1,800 SCAM read more

Company refuses to stand behind its work. I bought a truck that they fixed and put a new timing chain in. I drove it for 200 miles and the timing chain broke and they refuse to fix it. I would not recommend this place. read more

I took my car here because the transmission had a hiccup, one hiccup. Every 2 hours. I got my car back and it was Leaking antifreeze everywhere. Overheating, they did something to my car now. I'm never taking it back there ever again. I would not recommend them at all. read more

Just for everybody's heads up Tom's imports is not ran by Tom anymore. He's now down around the corner at Columbia's motor the people that are taking over his name in business or double charging everybody their mechanics suck. So good luck an oil change is like $200 there now highway robbery read more

I have been using Tom's Imports for maintenance and performance of my Audi A7 for the past 2 years. I must say that, while always solid, the new ownership/management has upped its game. I recently had trouble with the electrical and took my 2018 to an Audi dealership. They fixed the electrical system, but not the underlying problem which was a leak in my spare tire compartment. After a heavy rain, I took it into Tom's to have a go at the problem and within 15 minutes, Fender (his actual name) had diagnosed the problem and placed a temporary fix. He then contacted Audi to effect a permanent fix to the problem. He also didn't charge me for the evaluation. Of course, I was very impressed. Needless to say, Tom's now has a lifelong customer!! read more

I was just passing through and my car started to overheat! Just stopped in at Tom's Imports on a whim, and I'm so glad I did. They saved my whole day! The got my car repaired, in just a couple of hours, and I was back on the road in no time. The team was very professional and explained everything to me clearly. read more

I was driving across the country and my car started having some issues with overheating. I found this spot in the morning and they were able to get me back on the road within a couple hours that same day. I had an amazing experience here. The staff is friendly and trustworthy. I highly recommend Toms imports. If im ever driving through Columbia again, I'm getting these guys pizza. read more

WARNING: All work only has a three month warranty and it won't last you. Also, the owner has no want to please customers. Long story short, I spent about $5k at this shop, had to return multiple times for various issues pertaining to the work he had done which was not easy as I was 2 hours away. After many visits, inspections, and months of him saying it was PERFECT, I drove 9 hours to visit family in my Vanagon only to have to return to a new mechanic which had to fix almost everything Tom had touched. Now my vehicle actually runs correctly (Thanks to Bugstuff in Pennsylvania). However, when I tried to reconcile this issue with Tom and show records proving negligent or incorrect work, I was met with much resistance, a condescending attitude, and no solutions. ***Would NOT recommend to anyone!!*** read more

BUYERS BEWARE, DO NOT PURCHASE A VEHICLE FROM TOM!!! We purchased a 2012 Jetta TDI from Tom in January and were told that the DPF was new and that the vehicle had no issues. 2 days after purchasing the vehicle, the turbo blew due to a clogged DTF. When our shop in STL took a look, there was evidence that the DTF had been cut open to "clean" the it. In the process, it was discovered that the DPF was not repaired correctly. It was also brought to our attention that the sensors were damaged due to the clog in the DPF. Overall, we are out the 7k for the vehicle and another 7k for the repairs and the vehicle will still not pass emissions. It is suspected to be an issue with the computer, which may have been tampered with to hide the issues that the vehicle had. Do not trust this shop with anything, especially if it is a TDI model!! read more

Needed brakes on my 17 Colorado. Service was great, fast, and affordable. I will use them for all my vehicles.

On Day One of a two-week vacation, we parked our car at a store in mid-Missouri and it wouldn't wouldn't start. We got a jump and drove to Columbia. The nearby parts store recommended a new alternator. Tom's got us in immediately even though they had a lot full, and diagnosed the issue as a worn-out battery. They ordered a new one, specific to our Honda, and got us fixed and on our way in time to make it to our first destination. We are very grateful! The car is running great! read more

DO NOT GO THERE EVER. I'm only 5 years late on doing this & am very apologetic if others have been swindled by them in this duration, surely so. I was visiting family in Columbia, MO when my car didn't start one day, I called around & was given their info. I had my car towed to them after hours & called first thing the next morning requesting diagnostics & possible repairs depending on price & severity of the issues. I was told that they would give me a call back as soon as they knew what was wrong & we'd go from there... I called them around 11:30AM b/c they'd yet to call me & I was supposed to be leaving town that same day. He told me they had my car fixed, it was ready to be picked up, & would cost me close to $1K. I was infuriated that; 1. he didn't do what he said he was going to, call me w/ the diagnostics & price to fix them. 2. didn't give me the option of declining having them do the work, know the price of parts & labor, or getting a 2nd mechanic to look at it, & 3. him telling me that it was done, to be picked up, & if I was unable to pay I wouldn't get my car back. Completely swindled, unprofessional, & an all around dick he & his son although I could tell his son did realize that what his father was doing, how they conducted "business", & how he was treating me was all wrong. Besides all that money & stress at the bill's total, I had to take my car to another mechanic once I was home b/c they didn't replace any of the parts they charged me for, they simply put a band-aid on it & 2 days later my car was right back where it was when I took it to Tom's in the first place. It ended up costing another $2K! Absolutely ridiculous that that was an experience that I had to have. So yeah, they aren't good people, they are liars, they don't do the work they charge you way to much for, & you'd be best off if they were not an option for you when looking to get ANYTHING done to your imported vehicle. As I said in the beginning, apologies for taking so long to writing this review. I would suggest not doing any dealings w/ them if you can help it. If I could give them zero stars or negative stars, I would. read more

I had taken my car into 2 mechanics before I called Tom's for a estimate. One mechanic told me the sound my car was making was because it needed a balance and rotation...one well known mechanic told me told me it was my front ball joints on the 2nd trip back (after the first time I was told it was balance and rotation). Didnt feel right with that so i took it to a different well known mechanic who told me it was the right rear wheel bearings and quoted me $900.... I called Tom, he quoted me $220!! HUGE difference in price.. he checked it to make sure that was the issue and it was. He was in disbelief that I was quoted that high at another well known good mechanic.... and now my car is running perfect again without the horrible sound! Highly recommend I will add that they are very short and to the point. Dont expect a whole lot of conversation from them.. but they get the job done read more

Zero Stars. Daughter's 2008 Volvo had intermittent starting issues. She drove the car to the Tom's Imports, the engine was running great. After waiting a few days she called the shop and Tom tells her the car has a compression issue (uh, your car will drive rough if it doesn't have good compression). Her dad and I called Toms and he said that it had no compression, bent rods and a broken timing chain. Big RED FLAG, since she drove it to the shop and a car with those issues won't drive. We told Tom that we'd just pick it up and pay the shop charge ($96) but of course now it won't start, so we had it towed to another mechanic shop. While waiting for the tow truck, Tom told my daughter that the car was junk and he knew someone who would give her salvage money for it. Long story short, car went to a reputable shop, they got it started, put in a new sensor chip in and she's been driving it all over for a month now, no problems. Don't let your car-illiterate daughters take their vehicles to this place. read more

Took my Vw cabriolet for a door handle replacement and a starter issue, he did work I never asked him for, charged me $1,600. Horrible people read more

Don't Ever Go Here I coughed up nearly $1,500 for a new gasket set to these con artists, who originally put the estimate at $600. They refused to loan me a car or even to give me a ride back to my apartment after I dropped it off -- and they kept my car for well over a week after claiming the repairs would only take three days. In short, never again. Other auto servicemen told me afterward they could have done the job for half the price. My car needed a new motor... The place I had it towed to was Walts VW service.. He wanted to charge me $4500 for a new motor and said I need a new transmission. That's more than I bought my VW for! He said his friend would buy it for a couple hundred. Sooo I called around and everyone else said I don't need a new transmission. Tom gave me the cheapest estimate. So Monday around 5:50pm I had my car towed, he waited to close his shop until I gave him the keys. He also gave me a ride back to my place! He fixed my car for $2947, engine, liquids and labor! It would have been $2700 (I needed a new radiator because the previous owner glued a piece and also a heating hose) before he charged me he called me down to his shop and showed me the glue ( JB Weld) on my radiator and proof of the leaks my car had. He gave me the option of doing it now or later.. Obviously now would be way cheaper because my car was already in pieces. My car was done Friday morning! It has a 6 month warranty or is warranted for 6,000 miles. I'm not sure why people have given him bad rating but his place is awesome! It's a family business that's been around for generations! I will be coming back!! Thank you Tom's Imports! read more

My daughter and I were driving to St Louis in our 09 VW Passat and all of a sudden the brakes were locking up. Luckily, we pulled over by Tom's. They worked us in, fixed the hose for $30 and sent us on our way within an hour. They could have told me some expensive repair was needed and I would not have been the wiser. I tried to pay them extra because I was so grateful but they declined. Awesome there are still good people around!! read more

I have an old VW and Tom has every part I needed! Even some really rare parts. He gives me choices of the original equipment or the cheaper alternative but he will tell you why it is cheap when you ask him. He has a great knowledge of the old VWs and is a great resource. They may be a bit gruff but I take it as old school mechanic behavior. I don't need the gourmet coffee and soft serve ice cream in the waiting room. Just use your experience to fix my car. read more

Neh... If you make an error that is one thing, not to owe up to it is another. If you pride yourself on being a good mechanic you don't gamble with someone elses' money without discussing the options. You don't put a new clutch in a clonker car that you says runs good So I still have a car that runs like shit and just spent 1400 bucks. I like to give someone a second chance but neh. And, if you spend that kind of money you would expect a little more eye for detail: you put in a new clutch, then grease up the linkage, if you work on the motor for 500 bucks do replace some bad looking vacuum hoses, do put a few bolts in that are not there. Nope not impressed! read more

I was in Columbia - 700 miles from home - for the weekend. The alternator warning light came on (Saturday night). Auto Zone - across Coats Street - tested the alternator Sunday, finding it not charging. The AZ manager mentioned Tom's. I was there when they opened Monday. They repaired the car in about an hour (finding an alternator wire that had come loose) and charged me $44. Rude? Nope. Perhaps not candidates for any congeniality awards, but I found them competent, honest and responsive. (Heck, if I want pleasant conversation, I'll go talk with my favorite bartender,) read more

Bad Experience - I'd gone to Toms for a while for my VW New Beetle, but one day they told me I needed a new engine b/c of low compression. Took it to Walt's for a second opinion and the compression was fine! Tellingly, Tom called me back a few days later (I'd told him I would drop it off later) and tried to tell me that there was a slightly cheaper option. Not going back - sticking with Walt's read more

I should have checked Yelp before taking my car to this place. All of the reviews are 1 star, and I totally agree. These people are rude, and will interrupt you in the middle of a sentence. I am very disappointed in the service of this shop. I have been taking my car here for almost a year and my car always has the same problem. They have taken so much money from my family, but disrespect us time and time again. They do not treat their customers with respect at all, and they are also LIARS. Every time I take my car there, I feel as if they pull another problem out of thin air. They are ridiculous. Please get a second opinion before allowing them to fix your car. read more

Dishonest. Ruins expensive parts and doesn't stand behind his work. I wonder if he's trying to get cars for cheap to resell. I do not recommend this shop. I've heard lots of similar stories to mine. read more

They are very, very crooked! They sold me a 'new' transmission and after 100 miles it went out. I took it back and they said it was my fault and wouldn't warranty it. I took it to another shop and they said that as soon as they looked at it they could tell that it was clearly a used one and when they got into it, they could tell that it had never even been rebuilt. They will sell you anything to make a quick buck. On top of that the younger Tom who is at the front desk is a complete ass hole. He has absolutely no manners and he won't answer any questions unless his daddy is behind him so he can bull shit you something. DO NOT GO HERE! read more
