A group of esteemed Mancunians gathered in the Bier Haus, which is a delightful addition to one of Spinningfields latest hotspots, The Long Bar (owned by, you guessed it, Living Ventures). After a quick introduction to the charming prince, we were taken through a tale of the dizzying history of his family and their ties to the production of Kaltenberg, which is now brewed under licence and distributed by the award-winning Lancashire brewer, Thwaites. As Prince Luitpold explained, the company much prefers to set up local production of their fine ales to ensure the quality and freshness of the brews. Operations are expanding to Ukraine and Asia next year. We progressed through a wide variety of brews, each one getting a little bit darker and a little bit stronger. Before each tasting, the Prince imparted his considerable knowledge of the brewing process and flavour profile of the lagers and beers, including their impressive ABV%. In true Bavarian style, guests feasted on magnificent frankfurters the size of cricket bats in a bun (exaggeration but you get the point). After the tasting, the charming Prince fielded relevant questions about the brand, as well as the odd reference to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (don't ask). It was a truly unique experience, and we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon in the cozy Bier Haus. We have a new found respect for Kaltenberg and The Long Bar.

We arrived just before last orders but received a friendly welcome and weren't rushed out. I enjoyed my Aperol Spritz (which thanks to our recent Yelp elite event is my new favourite aperitif), they also appeared to have some fancy beers on the menu including one relatively unpronounceable one which my friend I suspect deliberately chose as I was ordering. Music was good too and overall this was a much more chilled option than nearby Alchemist, which was rammed. Granted the selection of cocktails is severely limited, but really if you have a mojito on the menu that's essentially satisfactory, isn't it.

I've always noticed the standards at The Botanist on Deansgate in terms of food quality and service to be much lesser than their other locations, but it seems to have continued its period of decline. On a recent visit, I ordered the Hanging Kebab with Chicken and Chorizo, and I ended up having to send the food back, this is because the food arrived lukewarm, and after cutting into the chicken, I realised it was pink. I originally thought it could have been from the chorizo on the kebab, but I just felt rather uneasy, after cutting into it further, and it was obviously raw. After bringing this to the attention of the team, they dealt with it promptly, and sent a manager over and promised to have a new meal on the go, ready in a couple of minutes, I thought that was the end of it, but sadly the chicken came out pink a second time again, while the food was hot, it seems they have the inability to cook the hanging kebabs all the way through. The chorizo was also rock solid on the second portion, and cooked poorly. I was disappointed that neither the manager nor the service team returned to my table to check everything was okay with the dish, knowing I had experienced issues previously. The prices seem also slightly high for glorified bar food, especially after the discontinuation of their loyalty scheme. 2* - The cocktails and alcoholic drinks section are cool, I wouldn't visit for anything other than drinks in the future.

Having come straight from the Manchester United game, I was forced to keep my jacket on during our meal which was a little unpleasant since the restaurant can get a little toasty. I thought this restaurant would be lenient since we were in the dining area and not the bar area but it was to no avail. The vibe of this place is pretty cool. There's a patio area that people can sit and mingle in. There's a spacious bar area where people can congregate and there's also a decent-sized restaurant area where all of the tables are located for diners. Music was playing the entire time we were there and it's interesting to hear how much American music was played. We ordered the famous hanging kebab and I got the lamb kofta which also comes with seasoned chips. Personally, I think the hanging kebab is more of a novelty. It's pretty cool to have your kebab just hanging for you to pluck but in terms of price and what you're getting, I think it's just average. You're definitely paying for your food to be hung that is cool to snap for social media. While I thought the pieces of lamb were prepared well, I thought the dish was lacking something to pair with the meat and I'm not quite sure the seasoned chips do the trick. While the chips are good, I was hoping for something more. At the end of the day, it's pretty cool to have a hanging kebab. It's more about the experience here at the Botanist.

Yacht Club, enough to make you feel as glam as Brigitte Bardot strutting around in a swimsuit and heels, even if it is blowing a gale and sideways rain is hitting you a la typical Cottonopolis. Yeah, our weather can be angry. We knows it. Thankfully this outdoor pop-up of utter genius has thought of this, and I'd go as far as to say that Yacht Club is almost weatherproof. Patio heaters keep things toasty when the blustery breeze picks up, the covered area ensures you remain dry when torrential downpour hits. It's located right outside HSBC so if you find yourself short of a bob or two, you can always hotfoot it to the cash machine. Plus, there's nothing to stop me from heading for a post-work drink when I've finished all my Yelpy business at my sometimes virtual office of Pret. Cocktails follow a filter coffee nicely, thankya. Yeah, speaking of those cocktails. NICE! Grab one of their signatures and sup on something strong in a martini glass, you shan't regret it. We did, and the atmosphere was awesome despite bad weather. It's a great addition to the Business District of Spinningfields as it means you've got somewhere more interesting to wine down after a hard day, and the decor's top notch. Day beds and parasols and reams and reams of bright white cleanness makes you feel like you're on holiday in the riviera. It's enough to have you clamouring for their most expensive champers, and if you're hungry for a nibble they order in platters from Giraffe. Job done! I've yet to venture here in the sunshine but I'm looking for an excuse to do so. Manchester, sort it out?

When NYE rolled around, I groaned at the thought of paying extortionate amounts to eat out or drink somewhere which forces you to celebrate 'together' (psscht, togetherness...), but then I saw an advert for 'NYE On The Piste' and The Ski Club and I was sold. £10 got us a glass of bubbly at the door, with strawberry slice, a drink (beer, wine, or spirit) AND a shot at midnight. We were greeted and shown the way to the war and, at this point, the place seemed a bit...empty. However, I was far too distracted by the decor to think about this - FUR RUGS PEOPLE! How I love a good fur rug. I felt very Bond girl, especially with my fur headband and glitzy dress underneath my cable knit, and even more so reclined on a leather sofa with a glass of bubbly! The cocktails were a touch expensive, around the £7.50 mark, but we tried some anyway; the boyf went for a port & cheese themed martini and I opted for a much safer warm winter Rekorderlig, mixed with sloe gin and honey. The bartender's display of skill was very impressive, both in the taste and amount of times he could throw the bottles around without dropping them. We rang New Year in, after trying the Jaegermeister luge(!!!), and were quickly handed our own bottle of prosecco - result! Lovely people and pretty groovy (ahem) surroundings. Now open until March, so get your Bond and go!

Little pockets of conversation were taking place. I didn't witness any mingling between groups. And noticeably absent were smiles, hugs, and boisterous laughter. This is a very good place to go to if you're out with a mix of the two. It's in the gay village but on the outskirts so it's kind of mutual territory. It's cheap, it's big, it has another bar below it (BED) and a huge island-type bar in the middle and they serve you at all sides so you never have to queue to long. And jugs of cocktail are buy-one-get-one-free. Messy times. It's a good place to start a night off, I wouldn't really stay here all night. Music is cheesy as you'd expect but it's a good laugh and the DJ is usually up for playing most requests.
