I was a customer of Tom's years ago. Initially, my vehicle had engine issues and per his advice, I had the engine replaced. However, my car continued to have issues and I had to continually have other things replaced or fixed. Eventually, the engine blew again after Tom's Auto Repair had replaced it a few years before. I was living in another state at the time, so when I took my car to a mechanic at Christian Brothers, he examined my car's engine and told me that the previously replaced engine was faulty and never should have been placed in my car to because it did not have good parts. Needless to say, I regret ever bringing my car to his shop to get it fixed. It wasn't worth the headache and I had to purchase a new car. read more

I needed an inspection done on late notice for a buyer for my car. So I just took my 88 BMW E30 to Tom on a recommendation from another shop that was fully booked. Even though Tom was also very busy he immediately took time out to stop what he was doing, do a once over, and then a few minutes later it was on the lift for an inspection. Tom was friendly, funny, and extremely honest. He showed the buyer and I everything he noticed and had concerns about. I couldn't dream up a better car mechanic than Tom! I needed to find someone close to Sunnyvale that I could trust. Tom is everything that you want in a mechanic: he's honest, knowledgeable, fair and quick. Yesterday my car wouldn't start and that forced me to make a choice. Tom was recommended by a friend (Rob S.), but he also had great Yelp reviews. I couldn't have been happier with Tom; he's my new mechanic and I'm his new biggest fan. My 92 Nissan 300ZX needed an entire list worth of work including: new brakes & rotors, alignment, oil and filter change, a new starter and more. Tom fixed almost everything in one day (he had to order a part for one thing), and I feel like I'm driving a brand new car! Tom's prices were fair and his work was excellent. I liked that he charged a lower "labor" price for things like alignment. Tom is a master mechanic. He graduated at the top of his class at Wyotech in Wyoming. Not some B-grade program, but the strongest automotive technician program in the whole country. He's extremely trustworthy and when there are instances where he needs to trouble shoot, he lets me know the route he's taking so there are no questions about cost, time, etc. I bet the majority of people who gave bogus reviews for Tom are either liars, or just didn't listen to Tom's advice and acted in ways which made their situations worse (chose not to get the suggested repair, waited until the problem worsened, etc.) It's just Tom and Drew in the shop these days. Both mechanics are top notch professionals when it comes to competing repairs. If I could Give Toms more than 5 stars I would. I been going to the same mechanic year after year by my house. I live in south san jose. Also, I hardly let any mechanic touch my Z ,I usually do all the work, unless its something I cant get to without a lift. Tom is actually one of my neighbors, and lives down the street from me....My name is Dave. I needed ball joints pressed in my lower control arms, and tension rods put in. Alot of the stealer-ships around town and even the mechanic I been going to for years quoted me almost 400+ for the job. I didn't really know about his shop, but decided to break free from my norm and get my 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo in front of him and his team. Needless to say, I walked out of his shop with more than reasonable costs for pressing in the ball joints, lower control arm install, tension rods and alignment. Tom saved me over 400 bucks in repairs! My Alignment is spot on, my Z does not vibrate any longer during braking, and I am a total fan of this shop now. TAKE YOUR CAR TO TOMS, YOU WONT BE SORRY! Definitely the go-to guy for your out-of-warranty car. I used to own a Mazda 626 which was well out of warranty. He fixed the wheels after a fender bender, did a major tune up, and a couple of oil changes, and I paid way less what a dealer would have charged me. I even started having some problems with the idle control motor... a replacement part would have cost me $600+, but Tom took it apart, cleaned it and put it back together for less than $100. Fixed the problem, at least till I sold the car. My dad has a Corolla which started giving us the dreaded check-engine light. Now, being fairly handy with a code reader, I found the problem (catalyst system efficiency below threshold). Ouch... the catalytic converter? In CA, that can run you a pretty steep bill. Enter Tom. He replaced the catalytic converter and charged far less than what a dealership would have. I highly recommend Tom for any repair work. read more

Pulled in off the side of the road because my engine was smoking. I walked in and I was greeted by a rude individual who seemed annoyed I pulled in and smiled. I was told by the machanic that no one could help me...or even look at my engine because Tom wasn't there. They said I could wait for him but they didn't know IF or WHEN he was even coming back. "BEWARE" After being a loyal customer of Tom's Auto for many years, the unthinkable happened. My 2005 F150 was taken in which Tom the owner expressed interest in buying but needed time to think. After 2 weeks he finally declined to purchase. When I picked up my truck, I looked under the hood & sadly TOM had switched my 2005 engine for a dirty old engine. I calmly asked what happened to my engine and he became defensive and asked me "how did I know that's not the original engine" then ordered me off his property. I am seeking legal action against TOM and his establishment for his blatant criminal activity on my truck. I think if I were a man he wouldn't have done such a dishonest cowardly act. Updating the review and revising my rating. Since writing my old review, I regularly used Toms auto repair for most of the issues with my car. The oil changes were mediocre and my engine always seemed to run sluggish. The sluggishness used to go away as soon I got an oil change from the dealer. I got my brakes replaced, but not very happy with the repair either. But I continued to go because he seemed reliable. But things changed when the air conditioning stopped working. Tom said that most cars with my brand are having AC problems, did some tests, and recommended to replace it for a price of $850 (My car was only 6 years old). Taking my wife's advice, I then went to another repair shop for a second opinion. The second guy said that whatever Tom said is total BS. And he fixed it for $55. Its been running fine since 6 months now. I was shocked that Tom would recommend an unnecessary repair for a regular customer like me. He is either dishonest or incompetent. So I'm not really sure how many stars to give in this case. I took my car to Tom's for an alignment, and I'd say the price was good (70 tax included). The owner Tom was pretty nice and friendly, a little quiet. Another guy in the garage Drew was doing the work on my car, and he was fast and Tom assured me he aligned it to proper specs. He was working on changing the shocks on another customer's truck, and even moved the truck off the lift to do my alignment first so I wouldn't have to wait as long. The problem is that Drew was incredibly rude. I won't say exactly what he said, but that guy has a serious attitude and anger management problem. I walked over and stood somewhere in the garage, and he rudely tells me to move away (I won't write what he said exactly). Then I noticed the alignment specs and suggested that the toe be exactly 0 in case he wasn't doing that, and he gets defensive. Gee dude, I was just making sure we were on the same page, it's my car and I'm paying the equivalent of 150 an hour. I'm quite baffled because otherwise it would have been a good experience, all this guy had to do was pretend to not be pissed off and it would've been fine. I've encountered egotistical customer service people who've been condescending and ultra defensive, but at least they were able to hold back blatantly rude comments. Basic customer service: act amiably, pretend like you're not having a bad day if you are, respect and patience. I might even consider coming back to have you work on my car if I hear that you figured this out. If my car weren't already up on the lift, I'd have gotten right back in and driven away. read more

Needed an oil change and just happened to pull into Tom's place. At first, I thought I saw a sign for an oil change for 19.99, but that was Penske just literally next shop over. At first, I didn't think too much about the price for a simple oil change until it was time to pay. $40 for a simple oil change??? you gotta be kidding me. They say the oil was synthetic, Synthetic my ass, the oil came in a big drum as all of it was.. 10W40... they say it would normally cost $26 for the oil change. My car was a 4cynlinder Honda... WTF? I would never go back to his place every again. If you want to get ripped off by these fools, please go there.. but that's what YELP Is for, right?? After I paid and vented about the cost, what caught me off guard is Tom went back to my car's hood and looks like he did something... who the hell know what he did after. shoddy workmanship, would avoid the place. I had my 2006 Volvo evaluated and repaired there and would caution everyone about their practice. The car had a over speed cooling fan. Without careful diagnosis they recommenced replacing the thermostat. During that process their ruptured a PVC tubing as well as failed to reconnect another pressure pipe. The result was my stalled car in a busy expressway, had to be tolled to a dealer, and expensive repair ensued. This was shoddy and dangerous work and could have caused harm to the driver. read more

Tom's auto is great. fast, friendly, reliable, good prices and honest. been going to him for a couple years now (on the recommendation of my very busy, but long-time regular mechanic), fixed and diagnosed broken and/or worn suspension, driveline, and engine misfires. Gives excellent and honest feedback on alternative repairs; certainly doesn't try to pull the wool over your eyes at all -- he'll let you know that a worn part is worn, but still works and should work for a little while so skip it for now unless you'd rather have the peace of mind. I went to Tom because I had car trouble and his shop was right across the street from where I was at the time. So I was a little nervous about being overcharged or taken advantage of. He seemed to do a good job and charged less than the quotes I got from some other mechanics I called. He was helpful in answering questions. I did get the 10% discount on labor for AAA members. My only negative was that he isn't that responsive. After I left my car there they said they would call back in a half hour with a quote but it took 2 hours and a couple of phone calls from me before I was able to get in touch with them. The repair which he said would take a couple of hours took about 5. However, it seemed a job well done so I have no major complaints. Tom seems to offer a guarantee for service performed. read more

I got my car to Tom's Auto for an OilChange. I got told to change my front break pad even though it is not in a bad condition. In fact, when I get my car inspected at my dealer shop two weeks after, it appeared that my front break isn't in a bad condition unlike what was told by Tom's. Either Tom's standard is ridiculously high or Tom's is Dishonest! Tom's uses cheap OilChange service as a bait so he can add up unnecessary fixes to you. Don't trust what Tom's told you. read more

My tire had a small nail in the middle. I went to Firestone, Sunnyvale to get it fixed. The front desk person looked the tire, told me that I had to purchase a new tire instead. As matter of the fact, this was the SAME purchasing requirement they asked me to do 2 months ago when I had a flat tire and stepped in Firestone in Sunnyvale. I did it. I paid around $260+ for it. But, this morning, Firestone was trying to sell me a new expensive tire again. I told the person that my car is a leased vehicle will be returned to dealer within two months, and I don't want to spend another $300 for a new tire. They still refused to repair it. So, I drove the car to Tom's Auto Repair, just next street. Tom's Auto Repair front desk person looked the same issue, didn't say anything, kneeled down and started repairing. literally with only 5 minutes, the problem was solved (the front tire light was off totally). Tom's Auto only charged me $15. The difference from those two auto shops are: Toms's Auto Sunnyvale -- Sincerely did repair work in 5 minutes, charged $15; Firestone Sunnyvale -- Refused to fix a flat tire, and "forced" me to purchase a new tire with service fee around $300. By the way, I did purchased a new tire for a flat tire two months ago already from them by paying close to $300. read more

Took in for alignment and he screwed it up. Managed to burn up one set of rear tires in one year. That is a $500 mistake. I then took it to Custom Alignment in Mountain View. Granted they were a lot more expensive, but I have had the new tires now for one year and they have at least another year of running - with even more miles than the ones I ruined after using Tom's.
