She diagnosed him with a specific viral infection and gave me great advice how to take care of him to lessen his pain. My son is doing much better today already and I believe Dr. Portela's compassion has something to do with it. I highly recommend her.

I've been going to this place for primary care for several years, and had many great experiences…read morewith them pre-covid. Even last year I had a delightful experience getting a physical with a medical practitioner who has since moved on. In retrospect, I can imagine why she might have left. The service has declined severely. I learned this when I tried to get care for a nasty cold within the past month. Ever hear of a place with "Immediate and Primary Care" in their business name that doesn't accept walk-in patients? Now you have. As an added bonus, they don't accept same-day appointments either. On top of these changes, they now require you to choose a PCP...even if your insurance doesn't require it. I was told that last requirement was GW policy -- you be the judge. What's left is a general practitioner's office with longer hours and shorter-tenured practitioners. I suppose this fills a niche, but not nearly as flexibly as an actual immediate and primary care clinic does. Unfortunately, it's hard to fill any care clinic demand in 2024 if the administrative side fails as well. Even if you have a MyChart GW online patient account, you cannot book appointments with them through your account unless you select "New Patient". There is no option to book online as an existing patient. I spent 38 minutes on hold with their phone system before giving up and walking to the office. Taped to the door is a printed sign saying 'NO WALK INS! NO SAME-DAY APPTS! The same sign is printed at the reception desk just in case you missed the message on the outer door. An indifferent (at best) front desk staffer told me she could only find records for me dating to last year, even though I've been a patient there for at least 10 years (and through at least one change in affiliation). Puzzled by these changes, I nonetheless booked a next-day appointment with them. But I had been sick for days: I didn't want to wait. So I found another clinic nearby, where I received the actual immediate care I was looking for. I immediately tried to cancel my appointment with GW 'Immediate' Care, which showed up in my online patient portal. You won't believe this, but *you cannot cancel appointments through the patient portal*. Ye gods! This would be okay if they ever answered the phone. I called to cancel anyway...and of course there was no answer. I left a message that day, then left a second message the following morning. There was no response or update -- all while I continued to receive appointment reminders I no longer needed. It honestly seems as if this place isn't even trying to attract or retain patients anymore. If you want actual immediate care, they tell patients to seek it elsewhere. They don't allow you to make existing patient appointments online (though this might be some kind of glitch). The front desk staff seems apathetic. And since they no longer answer the phone, there's is no reliable way to get common needs met. I hope I can get my medical records by requesting them in-person because I don't plan on seeking care there again.

Northwest Nurse Practitioner Associates to me represented everything that a family practice should embody and that is now missing in the health care system : empathy, compassion, knowledge, detailed-oriented, patience, confidence, trust, passion. I found all of the above qualities visiting Erin every years for the past 7 years and that last encounter (over the phone) with the manager was the complete opposite of what I was accustomed to hence my disbelief. I have the utmost respect for her and what she has built over the years and my decision to update my review is solely based on those 7 years. I do not believe that one incident should erase the consistent positive interactions and great care I have received from NWNP over the years. I want to believe that there was a miscommunication between me and the manager and it was not his intend to make me feel unheard. I appreciate him taking the time to reach out and write an apology email.

And that was true during that time. But something changed significantly as she transitioned to a sort of direct primary care practice and functional medicine practice. The practice seemed more impersonal. For example she tried to direct me away from monitoring my liver scores when I started taking statins. Although she had previously had the position that medications always have risks in promoting alternative medicine considerations and I had told her of my brother's death from non alcoholic cirrhosis due unmonitored prescription of cholesterol medication she tried to talk me out of the monitoring. At one point I had told her I didn't want to die from cirrhosis her reply was that there were worse ways to die.

It's been ~6 hours since the visit, no call, no results. Logged into their site - no after visit summary, no treatment recommendation. The clinic has no pager, no voicemail to get a follow up from the doctor or staff after hours and only a typical message to call 911 in emergecy. Result: no diagnosis, no prescription, no visit summary, like she hasn't been there.

Since then, there…read morewas a period of 4-6 weeks where the office was almost entirely unreachable/unresponsive to calls, emails, and portal messages - leaving many people without access to refills, urgent appts, etc. This obviously wasn't intentional but resulted in extremely unsafe care for hundreds of patients. I did write a complaint and the follow up was a call late into evening hours a month later from the personal phone (as in.. linked to cashapp, iMessage, etc) of a very sassy man named James Davis who said he was calling as Regional Manager to offer an apology for difficulties with their call center. I did let him know (respectfully) that the issues are far beyond a difficult call center transition, though the apology was appreciated. Ultimately, James repeatedly interrupted me, talked over me, and his tone was condescending. I let him know that his tone was coming across insincere and absolutely worsening my trust and buy-in (which I believe was the opposite of his intention, with recognition that it sucks being the one to call 100 angry people). Anyway, he hung up on me. For this practice to have a grown man call my phone after business hours from his personal cellphone under the pretense of apologizing, be condescending, and then hang up on me is comically bad.

I was trying to call to request my medical records to be sent to my new PCP. There is no option on their phone tree for that kind of request. My voicemail message of a week ago was ignored, so I was calling back on the appointment line. It says that if you are not going to make an appointment, your call will be rerouted, but it's extremely inefficient and time-consuming, not to mention that they never answered the call. I went on their website to see how to contact them, no information about how to email them. They did have a form to fill out regarding requesting medical records. Guess what? They charge $.76 a page, postage, plus $22+ if you want your records sent to a doctor. That is not standard practice. I should be able to get my records sent at no charge.

He is by far the most knowledgeable internist I've ever encountered, and he really takes his time. Meaning he would sit with you, go over your entire medical history, and listens to all your concerns (you wont encounter a dozen of medical assistants who basically act as your doctor using the owner's "MD" title) Heads up, he is a perfectionist, meaning he would spend as much as needed time with each patient, and considering not every patient's condition is the same, he might be running behind, and there might be some wait. But trust me, he is well worth the wait!
