I'm a traveling family entertainer and annually tour the South. I always stop for bbq and seek out off-the-beaten path spots. Tommy's was a great find. Just a minute off the highway in BiscoNC, not too far and not too close. It's a simple spot but the hospitality was large: Often I feel stared at by locals, being a Yankee (cruder folk might call me a New York Elite -but that's another story). Upon entering I did feel a bit inspected by the dudes in trucker caps but soon Tommy himself came by and we chatted amiably, the server was super sweet and attentive too- and my experience kept getting better. I felt the friendliness very acutely. The food was served quick but it was quality. The puked pork was excellent; moist with crunchy ends. The sauce (NC Hot) was perfect. The Fries were top notch and the Red Coleslaw was tasty, zesty and refreshing. I'll put this on my favorite list and hope work takes me thru this way again. Thanks Tommy! read more

We stopped at Tommy's for lunch while out for a day trip and tried the small chopped pork barbecue plate with red slaw. Both of us felt the highlight of the meal were the hushpuppies. They were absolutely outstanding: two very large, circular hushpuppies that might be mistaken for an onion ring, served hot out of the fryer. Superb. Best hushpuppy I've had in years. My sweet potato casserole was good, although the consistency was a bit on the soupy side. It had a hint of brown sugar, but no pecans for texture. The red slaw rates a meh; bland almost to the point of being flavorless. The chopped pork was the biggest disappointment of the meal. It didn't have a hint of smokiness, but instead was uncharacteristically sweet and unlike eastern NC or Lexington-style 'q. Neither of us cared for it. Service was good and the restaurant has your typical small-town BBQ joint feel. Barbecue restaurants are really about smoked meat and the chopped pork came up short here. If it wasn't for the incredibly tasty hushpuppies, this would be a 2-star review. read more

I stopped by to check this place out while I was in town. The girl that was waiting on me was very nice and the place was clean. I was just not impressed with the food at all. I got some pulled pork. Not a lot of flavor and the BBQ sauce was like brown water. They might have other items on the menu that are good but I do not recommend the pork or the BBQ sauce. read more

We happened on Tommy's in the middle of a roadtrip and are so glad we stopped in for a to go late lunch. Between the three of us, we had the veggie plate, coconut cake, chicken livers, and fried chicken. Everything was delicious, especially the cornbread! Very filling and a good variety of options to choose from. The service was quick and friendly, too. ORDERED: Chicken Plate Dark Meat with greens, mashed potatoes & corn bread $11.59 Choose Fried or Tender Smoked. White Meat $12.59. What I received (any place else) was on a small plastic plate with a plastic fork that would have been a child's plate at best. The leg and thigh were soooo small. Out for a lazy evening drive with the wife and we stumbled on Tommy's. Very happy that we did. I may have had better chicken in my life but I can't remember when. BBQ is very good with either sauce and all the sides we had were equally delicious. Chicken was just so good it ought to come with a warning label that it could be addictive. Definitely a cute place. But the food was terribly unseasoned. I actually questioned myself if I had the you know what because nothing had flavor. My chicken livers were cooked properly but they had zero seasoning. Seemed like they were just tossed in flour & fried in old oil. Green beans & baked beans were bland as well. My friend had the pulled pork, sweet potato casserole & hush puppies. She said the hush puppies were one of the best she's had, but tasted like old oil too. She also said the BBQ sauce was as if they pulled the juices from the meat or something and added some water. It lacked flavor too. Establishment itself was clean, the workers very friendly and gave great customer service. And portions seemed pretty on par with price. It's definitely small town feels. But food, all bland. We were the first customers of the day. I ordered a combo of white meat fried chicken and chopped bbq. I asked for the coarse chopped, but got standard bbq that i thought was a little dry. I had to add quite a bit of the sauce, but it was just OK. The fried chicken on the other hand was very good. It came out to the table very quickly, but it was hot throughout with a light coat of crispy but thin breading. It is not battered. It was tender and flavorful and I would highly recommend it. I had yams and green beans which were also good. It was served with two large hush puppy rings which were also very good. They sell t shirts for $10 so I got one for my nephew. Wow! Just wow! My husband and I stopped by for dinner on our way out of town after trailing all day. The staff were beyond friends and the owners made sure everyone was constantly taken care of. Not only was the service top notch but the ribs I had were fall of the bone and packed with deliciousness . My husband had the pull chicken, juicy as it could possibly be! The sides! Lord the sides! Stopped in for lunch on my way to south Charlotte from Alexandria, VA. This is great barbecue, apple smoked Boston Butt, served with hush puppies! None of the barbecue places I know of in N. We ordered dinner for carryout tonight and we can't stop talking about how delicious everything was. The smoked chicken was the most delicious chicken I've ever had, EVER! When staying in Troy or Biscoe, there aren't many choices for decent food. Tony's BBQ has been a great find in my recent stay at Montgomery Community College. I took our class here and the recent graduates all lamented that just as someplace good opens they are leaving town with their degrees. There is a daily buffet that varies day to day but mainly has good fried chicken and assorted veggies. The business is relatively slow at this point so service is stellar. The college is using Tommys to cater for them now (how I heard about it) and so far this seems to be the best kept secret in town. My contact at the college commented that they have done a great job on catering so far, always doing what they said they would do and bringing good food. Prices are reasonable and the food is honest and good. If you are in the area, it's about half way between Troy and Biscoe and worth the drive from both. read more

The reason why I gave 4 instead of 5 is because the baked beans were lacking flavor. They were not band, but there is room for improvement. The buffet has a good variety, the hush puppies and corn bread were fabulous. Desert is included and I had the chocolate pound cake. It was light and fluffy. I haven't tried anything but the smoked chicken but that it's really good. Smoker all the way through. Nice texture. The side veggies are typical southern soul food nicely prepared. Friend like other things on the menu but there are good soul food restaurants closer to home for me and this is the only place I know of around here for smoked chicken. I thought about giving 4 stars but out of all 10 in our party, no one had anything bad to say, quite the contrary actually. I had the combo plate with fried chicken (white), chopped bbq with mashed potatoes and gravy and a side salad. The chicken was perfectly cooked, juicy with a crispy flavorful crust. Awesome actually. As good as I can do at home in the cast iron skillet. BBQ was smoky and flavorful. Definitely not rushed while cooking. It had plenty of great bark and tender chunks as well. My wife had the Brunswick stew which was chock full of meat and vegetables. She said it was excellent. We were there approximately 30-45 minutes and could've just as easily stopped at a fast food joint and ate in just about the same time. Definitely a great find and one we'll be visiting again for sure. They also offer Q to go, so I'll definitely be dropping in for some pig to go.
