Tommy has been cutting my hair for the past year now - I first went to him when he was working in Kapolei at the advice of a friend. I'd lived on the island almost two years when I "discovered" him and prior to that had drifted from stylist to stylist and from one bad/indifferent haircut to another. Tommy is now officially the only person on the island I want touching my hair, and I live in Ewa - he's moved his services to Hawaii Kai and the distance doesn't matter one bit - I'll follow him all over the island if I have to!
I'm not rich, therefore I can't afford to pay $100+ per haircut and Oahu salons and their "stylists" have frustrated me repeatedly with their outrageous prices and frankly uninterested/uninspired stylists (Bellaviva Kunia, I'm talking about you!). Tommy charges about $55 per haircut which is amazing and totally affordable if you're like me and only have time to go every two or three months. (I tip him about $20 each visit, which isn't mandatory but I believe in treating well the people who are entrusted with making you look good - also, he flat-out deserves it.) Tommy is the first local stylist who has actually shown an interest in the end result and who truly desires that I walk out looking like a much better version of myself.
This may have something to do with the fact that he's a genuinely talented hair stylist - he's a perfectionist, too (not in a bad way - but expect a haircut to last at least 45 minutes if you've got mid/long-length hair - he will wash, cut, dry, cut, flat iron, and cut - he's meticulous and it pays off). He is not one of those ridiculously chatty, overblown, ass-kissing and flamboyant stylists. His value lies in the fact that he's professionally friendly, methodical, and confident in his work. He takes the time to get to know your preferences, get to know your actual hair/hair type, and then to make your preferences and hair type work together.
He's occasionally quiet, although his demeanor is warm. He'll chat with you on and off during the process if you've known him a while but he's generally laser-focused and sometimes brusque - What you're getting, I believe, is the attention of a man who takes pride in his work and who isn't going to waste time entertaining you with pointless blabber - he's not your monkey, he's there to make you look better than you did when he came in.
Finally, let me tell you that my last visit was on 9/4/2011, and I took my 14-year old daughter in for her first highlights. Tommy expertly juggled both of us (both of whom have long, unruly hair) and was able to give me my usual stunning haircut (which has evolved beautifully, thanks to Tommy, from a bad Bellaviva haircut CORRECTION to something that flatters my face and works with my hair type) in under 3 hours. Tommy came in to the salon where he rents space on a Sunday (holiday weekend!!) to take care of us since he understands how hard it is for us to come up from Ewa during the week.
I don't know a lot of stylists who will do this without charging you more than your next month's rent...Which just goes to show: This man is the complete package - truly a find if you're looking for someone to take care of your hair for absolutely reasonable prices (frankly, he should be charging more but I will never say that to his face since I am not moving up a tax bracket anytime soon) and with a confident, professional manner. Get your head to him NOW. read more
