It's not just leather couches, though there're certainly enough of them to go around the store. You can also get chairs, tables and the odd entertainment unit. A lot of the furniture has a vaguely art deco, modernist vibe to it, and anyone who loves white furniture is might see something that they like. The prices seem pretty standard for your long term furniture investments. Most of the couches I tried were fairly comfortable, but they all seemed to be on slightly to obtuse an angle for my particular taste, so slouchers will probably enjoy them more than people who like to sit relatively upright. It's hard to deny that this era of Scandinavian furniture is particularly elegant, stylish and urban without looking at all try-hard or copycat, and it does fit so easily into Melbourne homes of a certain era. Even just to pass through the amazing furniture, to smell the history, class and price tag of the all the bits arranged beautifully so. There is a fashion trend visible here, a wave the shop seems to sit confidentiality upon. The way it juxtaposes the Scandinavian furniture with nostalgic Melbournian signage gives you a little bit of time warp, a small black hole in your design history. Have these pieces always belonged together. I cannot say I have ever bought anything from here, but I like to think I will some day. It looks and feels amazing and well kept, and the lady behind the desk - sometimes feeling a little like part of the furniture - looks up and smiles to every customer that enters.

The Jimmy Possum store is on Alexandra Parade, bordering Clifton Hill and serves as a showroom for domestic desire. The range of products is centred around their classic timber furniture range and extends to occasional furniture, soft furnishings, lamps, paintings, rugs, candles etc. Jimmy Possum designs include a high level of quality and warmth that makes the house look like a home and not a contrived gallery space. Their pieces are user friendly while still conveying relaxed luxury. I like this companies philosophy, they are "the "largest producer of furniture manufactured from recycled timbers" and also create furniture from new timbers sourced from commercial/sustainable forestry. Their philosophy comes with a jaw dropping price tag. Not gonna lie a gorgeous massive timber dining table will set you back around a cool $5000. Excuse me while I lie back and quietly lust after (recycled) wood.

I hereby place Clavel onto my list of "Places I love visiting but will never be able to afford to…read morebuy". Vintage Danish furniture - three words I simply cannot get enough of, yet one thing I simply will never be able to afford. Clavel is full-to-the-brim with this stuff. Located opposite Carwyn Cellars in Thornbury is a big warehouse filled with beautiful furniture and homewares. Need a new sofa? Or a 70s dining table and chairs? Or perhaps a giant dentist chair and lamp? Weirdo. But seriously, Clavel has it. Clavel isn't as expensive as similar counterparts such as 20th Century Scandinavia in Brunswick East or Grandfather's Axe in Northcote, so it does have that going for it. Though I do suspect the quality isn't quite as high as them - it's definitely quantity over quality with Clavel. I did eye off some beautiful ceramics and glassware that was quite affordable - they don't have a lot of it, but what they do have is stunning. Clavel is definitely worth a visit if you're on the hunt for an item of furniture that's not like the rest. It's also a fun place to visit if you like perving on furniture like I do.

I stumbled upon this store walking home from Barkly Square. I spotted a bamboo tiki bar (with matching bar stools) in the window and immediately gravitated towards it - it was so damn beautiful. Naturally, as most things are, it was hugely out of my price range but WOW it was nice to imagine it in my living room. Angelucci 20th Century don't just do furniture! They also have great homewares, mirrors and a variety of knick knacks (everyone loves a knick knack). A great warehouse for Saturday afternoon browsing or if you have a nice budget to spend on home-decorating or are looking for a gift with a difference. This is the second Angelucci store, sister to the Fitzroy store, and acts as more of a warehouse than a retail store.

The taste and style of the furniture is pretty varied, but there's nothing too upmarket in stock most of the time. The prices are similar to that of op shops so it's more affordable option for students and anyone else with financial concerns, and everything seems to be in fairly good condition. It also sells an odd assortment of second hand books at the front of the store and the odd DVD. Green's offers same day delivery, lay-by and trade-ins, and the guy running the store is really friendly and approachable. A good one to keep in mind for anyone whose furniture is likely to keel over anytime soon and isn't at the settled down and decorating the house forever more stage of life.

On Sunday morning, while my hankering is normally for a Bloody Mary and some granola, I instead craved fresh plants. It had been a long time since I visited Northroy Nursery and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. From the exterior it appears to be your basic nursery, primarily selling pots and soil however when you walk in you will find quirky cacti, hanging plants and succulents as far as the eye can see. But what is best about Northroy Nursery is their indoor plant section. I was very surprised to see an abundance of fiddle leaf figs (if you're not in the know, these are a very cool plant right about now), which are often very difficult to find in Melbourne. While these were quite small, they were retailing for an eye-boggling 20 clams! I had never seen them so cheap before! They also stocked a LOT of fruit salad plants, hanging plants and also moss for if/when you attempt a terrarium. If you're in the market for some good indoor plants, definitely stop boy Northroy.
