"Occasional" furniture .....I think is furniture you don't use ALL the time......but more than NONE of the time...........making its use ......occasional. Anyway they stock some cute occasional furniture, good for adding a little retro love to a room. I have found their pricing to be lower than that of the larger vintage traders which makes the pieces more accessible for a younger market. There are the larger/$$ pieces of furniture but also a selection of smaller, affordable bric a brac straight from the kitchens and lounge rooms of the 60's. But for those inner city yuppies out there with a like for dark wood and an Asian slant on furniture Bohemio is the go to place. Bohemio has a range furniture including dining tables, side tables, bookshelves, entertainment units, sideboards, coffee tables and beds amongst other things. The stock is traditionally made and is quality furniture. They have frequent sales and while not being cheap are not overly expensive for the quality of furniture.

In two words I would describe Bohemio's furniture quite simply as a) heavy, and b) dark. Prices are hugely reasonable with a giant dining table setting you back roughly $1,000 rather than the $2,500 upwards you'll fork out at Mark Tuckey or one of Johnston Street's other furniture retailers. In the sea of artfully distressed furniture shops on Johnston Street Bohemio definitely stands out for its vaguely different aesthetic. Sourced from around the world Bohemio's range of solid wood furniture has a definite Indonesian feel to it and if you like your furniture substantial with an exotic edge you'll probably buy into the look.

Everytime I pass by, i always do a double take because this store is always filled with beautiful homeware and décor. Think the likes of Mediterranean blue consoles, buffets and side tables, gorgeous gold table lamps, solid wood storage chests, large hurricane lamps and thick wood framed mirrors. Themed together and styled well so you can be inspired, walk through this store and you'll find a multitude of clever ideas and exquisite products to adorn your home with. I love the rustic charm of the timber pieces juxtaposed against the more modern finishing pieces. They also carry a beautifully wide assortment of candle holders and hurricane lamps which would give any dining space, mantle place, patio or living room that romantic, serene vibe.

So much so that my fatigue with this particular retail oeuvre had all but put me off popping into the East India Company for a browse. And that is a great shame. A diminutive little shop selling a range of textiles, ceramics, rugs and homewares from Asia, the East India Company is a nifty little boutique with a buyer who is clearly in possession of some quite incredible taste. I particularly like East India Company's excellent selection of handmade ceramic doorknobs - a steal at $4 each - and its shell inlaid jewellery boxes which would make the perfect gift. Well for me at least. Prices are hugely reasonable, stock varied but aesthetically cohesive, and most impressively East India Company sells a range of homewares that is at once traditionally Asian in its sensibility but very, very modern. I'll be back.

I really loved window shopping and even in taking a photo I caught two others peering through as they became entranced by the pretty objects that you can't help but picture being somewhere in your home. There is so much character here where their rustic, older pieces mixed amongst the newer more designer items just seemed to create a beautiful setting where (if I had the money) I would love to have picked up a bunch of decorations to complete some rooms in my home. Some of the hanging lights and macramé hangings were so cool and would look great in a window with some flowers. I got a bit carried away here but of course, it always comes with a price.

Specialising in furniture from the fifties and sixties, Grandfathers Axe really does have an extraordinary selection of extraordinary vintage tables, desks, chairs, sofas and more. That said, a nice vintage armchair of Spanish or Scandinavian provenance will set you back around a cool $3000, making Grandfathers Axe more of a window shopping destination than anything for me. The company itself is all class; all primrose yellow company Volkswagen outside; high-end design and fashion magazines strewn around the place and staff that look as if they'd be just as comfortable lecturing on an industrial design degree. If you have deep pockets and a penchant for incredible mid-century furniture, Grandfathers Axe is the place to go.
