I contracted Tomascak Plumbing to service my acid neutralizer tank. Previous owner of our house must have used them in the past as their sticker was on the tank when we moved in 2011. They came in and re-filled our tank with media (no other service was done, tank was not cleaned or emptied). They came again in 2012 and the same "service" was performed. They were polite and professional, but what happened in 2015 made me think that they either do not know much about acid neutralizer tanks or they did not care about the small homeowner to take time to properly service the tank.
First, I should mention that if you need a firm appointment held Tomascak Plumbing is not the company to use. They are small and they may reschedule several times if they have some other emergency elsewhere. It happened to us in 2015, but I did not mind and I worked with them as I prefer to use smaller businesses.
A young service person came to our house and refilled the tank as they did in 2011 and 2012. That night when the return cycle ran, all of the media that he put in the tank was dumped in our septic tank clogging the pipe and causing the water to start flooding our basement. My husband thought quickly on his feet and ripped the return pipe (which is really not attached to a drain) out of the drain and made the water run out the window. We avoided a big catastrophe.
Tomascak Plumbing returned the next day. They had to snake all the pipes. They emptied the tank, and we advised them that they put too much media in our neutralizer tank. This caused the return cycle to pull all the media inside the pipes (which should never happen).
We were sent the bill for all the repair work. We told them that we think it was their error and that we would not pay for the repair work, that we will pay for the cleaning of the tank (actual proper service they should have done the first time )and the new media and labor for that.
They came back saying that the reason for the failure was that some old media (prior to us owning the house) has solidified and caused the media bed to raise and thus the media was dumped in our pipes. They did admit that they filled our tank with more media than the manufacturer recommended (at least 6" over the maximum height recommended) leaving only 10" of free space (out of which there is a rounded cone cap on top and at least 3" of that is angled and not fully round).
Again, I questioned why in the three times than came to our house (and knowing that the previous owner was not diligent in servicing the unit) they never recommended dumping the old media and cleaning the tank. They said that is "Monday morning quarterbacking"
I disagreed. They should have done proper servicing and not treat us as some afterthought appointment they could quickly complete.
So bottom line, Tomascak Plumbing might be great for some other work (or if you are a big enough customer they may work with you better), but if you are servicing your acid neutralizer tank I would definitely question what and how much of media they are putting in and if they should be cleaning the tank. We could have ended up with a flood. We were lucky that we stayed up when the return cycle was running and that we were not in bed oblivious as to what is happening in our basement. read more
