My husband, daughters and I decided we wanted to try to find something in between Brookings and…read moreMarshall - to meet up with our College student. We found the Humble Pig Smokery on Google and decided to take a chance, hoping it wasn't some "Famous Dave's" knock-off.
With my husbands career, we move around about every 2-3 years, so we've lived down South where smoked meats and barbecue is the flavors to beat. And because I grew up in the Midwest, I will be honest, I was not expecting much.
We were met with smiles, even though we showed up less than an hour before they closed. The owners politely waited for us to make up our minds on which meat, sides, and barbecue sauce.
The cost was very reasonably priced, to my amazement!
And then we all sat down at a clean table, mouths watering, to sample our fares.
Our first bites were greeted with smokiness, sweet and juicy flavors of a tender cut that we have not had in quite some time.
The meals were served on trays, lined neatly with parchment paper.
The Macaroni and Cheese with Brisket satisfied our Mac'n'Cheese connoisseur, who has been making her own for the last 8 years including her own combination of seasonings. She did not share. -.-
The Brisket sandwich was served on a bun that held the contents, not soaking up juices and becoming soggy. The Coleslaw was a nice mayo-based, creamy surprising taste that is not traditional in my book (although I cannot stand vinegar based coleslaw or bbq sauce), but was pleasing to the palette and complimented the main dish. And because I enjoy my slaw with my sandwich, it was promptly dumped on the meat and topped with the bun.
The Brisket Nachos for our oldest consisted of a tender, juicy beef brisket served on top of tortilla chips, with black olives, shredded cheese, salsa, and cheese queso (she omitted jalapenos this time) and was thoroughly enjoyed! The cheese queso had a nice hint of spicy, and then even topped with some of the crafted BBQ Sauce - only found at the Humble Pig Smokery, the entire plate was devoured.
We made sure to let them know how pleasantly surprised we were to find such a tasty cuisine only a short drive from our place, in the Midwest of all places! It IS the best in this area!
If you have not had a chance to try them, it is worth a drive even from Sioux Falls! They are a 10 out of 10! :)
**My husband would say that their cornbread muffins should not contain cinnamon (my guess, possibly a touch of nutmeg as well), but I enjoyed the twist on the classic. And homemade Southern Sweet Tea would take it to a whole 'nother level, but not everyone enjoys that in these parts.
Well done Humble Pig Smokery! We'll definitely be back!
