It may be a Wetherspoons, but if you want to drink real beer this is the Pub to visit in Grantham.

Happy Hour! The nice thing about the Blue Pig is that it is off on a side street so not very many…read morepeople besides the locals know about it! I'm sure that the locals probably don't appreciate me and my American (and a few British) friends crashing their pub, but I like the atmosphere, the reasonably priced drinks, and the jukebox. It has character and probably isn't very politically correct... but that's what I like it. I'm not sure if they have found a cook yet, but they used to do some fantastic chips, although the burgers weren't quite as good. The bar staff have always been really friendly and pleasant. If I venture into town for a drink, this is where you'll find me.

I tell you something, if you look hard enough in Grantham town, you'll find some real gems. I say…read morethis because the blue pig is hidden out the way, but is it a real gem? First off I say that I went for dinner but all I'm going to say is it was lovely, the reason being, is upon a quick chat with the manager he said he was stopping meals within the next week or two. So for me to recommend you to go here for the food, would be pointless. Shame though because the food was very nice. The pub is delightfully traditional, not for the modern businessman, and maybe a miss for families but for an average Joe looking for a chat and a drink it's perfect. The bar staff are friendly, and you can even have a chat with the wonderful manager there. The pricing for drinks is average, which you would expect from a small pub in this day and age. It's not a perfect place though, outside needs a lot of work. The beer garden is hidden away, and is surrounded by brick walls and an old shed. There is also area for smokers, which badly put together. But it's all forgivable when you step back into the pub. Rating - Food : 4/5 Atmosphere : 3.9/5 Service : 4.5/5 Pricing : 2.5/5 Overall : 3.8/5 Recommend For: - Traditional Pub Goer/ Someone looking for a local/ Someone looking for escape

The Gregory - Getting to be in my boyfriend's arms, even when we're separated by the Atlantic and multiple time zones

The Gregory

What a charming pub! The Gregory Arms is perfectly situated right across the street from the…read moremagnificent Harlaxton Manor. It's a quintessential English countryside pub, modest and inviting from the moment you step inside. The fact that it's named after Gregory Gregory, the very founder and builder of Harlaxton Manor, adds a wonderful historical connection to the area. Of course, I couldn't resist a bit of fun! My boyfriend's name is Gregor, so snapping a picture in front of The Gregory Arms and sending it to him was a must. It was my little way of joking that I got to be "in his arms," even with the Atlantic Ocean and several time zones between us. This pub is not only a lovely spot with its authentic English charm but also a source of a sweet and silly travel memory for me. If you're visiting Harlaxton Manor, be sure to pop across the street to The Gregory Arms for a true taste of the local atmosphere and a touch of history.

So for those of you who have been following my saga as an American in Britain, both Work BFF and I are being deported... not in the UK Border Force way, but in the civilized way of our contracts and visas are finished and since no one will dare sponsor a non-EU citizen thanks to David and Nick (yes I'm on a first name basis with them), it is back to 'merica. As a result we have taken the opportunity to use this as an excuse to eat at The Greg as many times as we possibly can! The first was a lunch with our assistant and the college nurse. I always forget that The Greg does some nice sandwiches for the lunch menu! I think because this was a 'business' lunch we decided to go all out. All three courses! I had the pork belly and deep fried quail egg to start with, the rib eye sandwich, and the brownie for dessert. Our assistant had the Lincolnshire Poacher Souffle... which from the looks of it, was pretty delicious as there was none left when she was finished. The pork belly was a bit tough... I wanted a crispy top and tender juicy meat (and fat), but the meat was dry and the fat was tough, not tender, however, loved the Asian spices. The quail egg... I know it doesn't take much to cook one, but I so wanted to cut into it and have the yolk drain out onto the plate! It didn't do that. It didn't really have any flavour... not even the slightest bit of eggy flavour. My sandwich was lovely though! The ribeye was nicely done and not tough at all... which is important on a sandwich! Did not really care for the onion jam or whatever it was, but it didn't make the sandwich worse. And the brownie... that was really delicious! Moist and gooey, really spot on! The other ladies enjoyed their meals... in fact I think we all agree that we probably had too much! The second was a dinner with the newbies... again, Work BFF and I made the executive decision that it was only right that on behalf of the college we take them out and welcome them. So we did. To The Greg! I saw the asparagus with hollandaise starter and thought, "Must have that!" However, I also wanted the salad, but didn't want to overdo it on the greens (ha...if you only knew about that salad...). So then I saw a new item... the Salmon Fishcakes with Frites. The frites are the thin French fry rather than a thick cut chip. Usually not a fan (I know, even though I'm American), but these were really nicely done. The fishcakes however... they looked like they were deep fried, but it was mostly mashed potato with a flake here and there of salmon. It was really disappointing. However, the newbies seemed to enjoy their dishes (the fish and chips and the saffron risotto). Unfortunately Work BFF and I got the same dish (rarely happens so we can share) and she did not enjoy it either. The last one was actually Work BFF's last night in the country :(, so we trekked down to The Greg. The Buj, Professor Snape, and I had the warm salad, while work BFF had the Goats Cheese Crostini for a starter and the Asian Mussels as a main. Work BFF totally knew what she was getting and enjoyed every minute of it. And as for me... well the salad is always good, in fact I got more of the sauteed potatoes that are so delicious! My only complaint... the center of the poached egg was completely done, so no lovely rich yolk to coat the lettuce leaves and other goodies in the salad. We also ordered dessert... Sticky Toffee Pudding for Work BFF and I... very rare that you find it in the states... and Professor Snape had the cheese board. The service was unusually a bit hit and miss... not sure if it was because it was a slow night or what, but it was out of character. After those we sat outside in their beer garden and had our drinks. A good way to send off Work BFF!

This time it wasn't just for drinks! Was trying to impress a Welshman who doesn't know that he's a…read morefoodie, but he is. His love for food surpasses the long standing affair I have had with food... and that's saying something! I will admit, I was a bit confused, as there is the Wine Bar and Restaurant serving tapas menu, but there is The Garden Room Restaurant which, according to their website, serves "top quality menu, serving all the favourites..." I made reservations the night before and we showed up a little early to have a drink beforehand. The staff were very attentive, very friendly... not pretentious. They brought us hot rolls while we looked over the menu. The only problem is while I was looking over the menu I left part of the roll to eat after we ordered, but it went rock hard because it had cooled down. You can order a la carte, or you can choose 2 courses for £16.95 or 3 courses for £18.95... add a couple extra quid for the Sirloin Steak and the Fillet Steak. We decided to go for the 3 courses... I was a little disappointed that 3 out of the 5 starters had stilton cheese... not only am I not a fan of it, but I'm also lactose intolerant (some dairy products affect me more than others...). I ended up having the Baby Chicken Caesar Salad, while the Welshman had the Grilled Portuguese Sardines. From some of the tables (one of which we were sitting at) you can clearly see into the kitchen and watch the chef at work. Normally this might make me a bit nervous, but this was actually nice, it was like watching an artist at work. The Baby Chicken Caesar Salad was nice, would have liked a touch more dressing and some more of the fabulous fried croutons. The Welshman practically inhaled the sardines, but before they disappeared, he let me have a taste. I've never been a fan of sardines because all I can think of are the ones in a can that I find repulsive, but these were delicious and it is possible that I could order this on my own upon another visit to the restaurant. For our mains, I had the Minted Breast of Lamb while Mr. Welshman had the Prime Sirloin Steak. I have had just about every other cut of lamb, but never breast, then again I've never seen it on a menu. Food came out and it was truly beautiful and smelled wonderful! My advice to anyone that has never had Breast of Lamb before... it is rolled and it is a thin layer of meat lined with fat, so rather than cutting straight into it, try unrolling it. I don't think I would order Breast of Lamb again, however the meat that I did have (and some of the bits of fat) were so tender, but it was quite a bit of work. The mash, cabbage, and bacon with the jus was fabulous! Mr. Welshman's steak with chips, tomatoes, mushrooms, and onions looked wonderful and by the way he was devouring it, it had to be good. He put a piece on my plate to try... he ordered his steak rare and, well, I was a bit hesitant to try it, however, the meat just looked so beautiful and there wasn't any blood. So I gave it a go. At that very moment, I became jealous of him and his steak. It was gorgeous. After our mains, we decided to just order one dessert to share. Of course we went for the Soft Chocolate Pudding. It does take longer than the other desserts to prepare, so you have been warned. We also decided to have a bottle of the house white after finishing a bottle of the house red. I will be honest, I have almost always preferred a white wine to a red wine, but in this instance I preferred the red and after a couple of sips, we had wished we had stayed with the red wine. The chocolate pudding came out... it smelled lovely. It came with ice cream with white chocolate bits in it and a raspberry compote. Honestly, it didn't need any of that, maybe just a bit of cold double cream to help cool down the chocolate pudding, but it was very good. We sat for awhile, trying to finish the white wine, and I saw some of the tapas dishes go out... I'd like to go back and try that menu too! Overall, it was a good dining experience and I'll definitely be back again!
