Happy Hour! The nice thing about the Blue Pig is that it is off on a side street so not very many…read morepeople besides the locals know about it! I'm sure that the locals probably don't appreciate me and my American (and a few British) friends crashing their pub, but I like the atmosphere, the reasonably priced drinks, and the jukebox. It has character and probably isn't very politically correct... but that's what I like it. I'm not sure if they have found a cook yet, but they used to do some fantastic chips, although the burgers weren't quite as good. The bar staff have always been really friendly and pleasant. If I venture into town for a drink, this is where you'll find me.

I tell you something, if you look hard enough in Grantham town, you'll find some real gems. I say…read morethis because the blue pig is hidden out the way, but is it a real gem? First off I say that I went for dinner but all I'm going to say is it was lovely, the reason being, is upon a quick chat with the manager he said he was stopping meals within the next week or two. So for me to recommend you to go here for the food, would be pointless. Shame though because the food was very nice. The pub is delightfully traditional, not for the modern businessman, and maybe a miss for families but for an average Joe looking for a chat and a drink it's perfect. The bar staff are friendly, and you can even have a chat with the wonderful manager there. The pricing for drinks is average, which you would expect from a small pub in this day and age. It's not a perfect place though, outside needs a lot of work. The beer garden is hidden away, and is surrounded by brick walls and an old shed. There is also area for smokers, which badly put together. But it's all forgivable when you step back into the pub. A nice big corner pub with a restaurant and bar area. It's very well appointed and comfortable,…read moreand lots of seating choices. We sat toward the back and there seemed to be many students catching a meal there. Went to the bar and ordered and the bartender was very friendly and helpful. Got a pint of local beer and it was wonderful. I had a steak and kidney pie. Really good and the gravy excellent. The fries and peas were also delicious. Why can't we get good fresh peas like these in the US? My dining companion had a quinoa and veggie salad and it was also excellent. Large portions and good quality. Getting upstairs to the Men's toilet was a bit of a trek and kind of strange, but in a Victorian style building what would one expect. It is very contemporary once you find your way and get there. This place is worth a stop.

A drive up to Scotland with an early start deserved a breakfast on the way. There used to be Little…read moreChefs along the way but these have been taken over by the American Diner, not to our taste, we have tried one. So, checking online, get off the main road and find a Wetherspoons. They can't be beaten for quality and price. We found this great pub and stopped off. A normal size breakfast, juice and unlimited coffee. Great service, Comfy surroundings although, this time, with unusual accents around us. I mean, unusual to us. And a history lesson on the walls about Isaac Newton. Wonderful drive break. Obviously, I am a Wetherspoons fan.
