    Campsite and wastewater treatment plant.

The park is next to a wastewater treatment facility (see photo). Guess what it smells like? Hint: it rhymes with "spit". It is not possible to sit outside nor run your camper fans. This cannot be over stated. The smell permeates everything. It is absolutely awful. The facilities are new and there are washer/dryers on site. It is clear that the campground is understaffed. Bathrooms are not clean. Internet is poor. The campground is located in a high crime area (the ranger is armed) and the first night we saw cars driving thru looking around which made us nervous. But on the second night more campers arrived which increased our sense of security. So much potential in this campground. So much ruined by the placement of the sewage plant. It speaks to poor urban planning and the lack of respect for sacred places with important history.

This park was originally the designated Shelby County Negro State Park. It opened in 1938 as the second state park in the nation for African Americans. It was renamed to T. O. Fuller State Park in 1942, after Dr. Thomas O. Fuller, a local African-American educator, pastor, politician, civic leader and author. The park has over 1,100 acres, 45 RV camping sites, a primitive camping site, a swimming pool, three hiking trails, an interpretive center, four pavilions, and is adjacent to Chucalissa Indian Village, a Mississippi Mound complex that was designated a national landmark in 1994. We were surprised to arrive and find that the visitor's center was closed. I did wave down a park ranger, who stamped our passport and told us that the visitor's center "is closed on weekends," which surprised us. When I expressed that at 2pm, on a Sunday, I'd expected it to be open, per the website, the ranger quipped: "Well, the website isn't always correct." And that was the end of the conversation. The interpretative center was also closed, as was the Chucalissa Indian Village. And, it was over 90 degrees with insane humidity so we didn't explore too much. We did drive the perimeter, and enjoyed seeing the ducks in the marshes. So, hopefully, when we come back out, we'll enjoy it more and get to see more.

Terribly run down and dated! 1star for the electricity hookup. Bathrooms are nasty and the area smells awful! We will not be back!

Absolutely the nicest park in the tri-state area. It had rained earlier today, so it was damp, but the Tennessee humidity had a way of raising up so much flowery fragrance. Between that and the thick, moist vegetation and moss on the trees it was a treat for the eyes as well. My dogs couldn't get enough of the beautiful trails and I'd recommend this one over all other Memphis parks.

Beautiful accommodations. Perfect place for a cozy winter camping outing. Woods are thick and keep it quiet (with the exception of the sounds of nature!) Loved being able to hear woodpeckers and the local birds chirping instead of city noises. So thrilled we found this little gem for camping. Well equipped sites with firepit, grill, picnic table, water, electric, and post! Large spacious camping sites, perfect for RVs. Well maintained grounds, clean facilities and bathrooms, reasonably priced. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend.

The smell is beyond bad. Nice park laundry facilities and close to downtown. We stayed our 2 days but would not camp here again.

It starts off pretty normal: a bridge, some signs, people with strollers and bikes. Then, a few steps in, you look left and boom--there's the mighty Mississippi just doing its thing, rolling slow and wide like it knows it's the star of the show. Look right, and the Memphis skyline's just casually posing for every photo you take, no filter needed. Halfway across, I realized something weird: I was crossing state lines on foot. Tennessee behind me, Arkansas ahead. No tolls, no border guards--just a bunch of joggers and one guy playing country music out of a Bluetooth speaker strapped to his backpack. As the sun dipped, the lights kicked on--thousands of little LEDs blinking across the bridge like it was throwing its own party. It felt like magic. A peaceful, riverfront, light-show kind of magic. Five stars for turning a simple walk into a memory I'll probably brag about way too often.

I found the restroom on the Arkansas side, its two porta-potties behind a bunker wall. Surprisingly, they were clean. You can see the blue outhouses from the area above after you leave the bridge. I did not see restrooms on the Tennessee side, but I may have missed it. It would be real cool if they put a piano at the center of the span like they did on the bridge in Austin, TX.

We decided we would go hiking somewhere in Arkansas or Missouri as it appeared that nothing else naturey was close to Memphis. Well, guess what! There most definitely is!!! Ghost River Outfitters is about an hour outside of Memphis and offers canoe and kayak rentals down Wolf River. They also apparently offer stand up paddleboard rental for the truly adventurous (I will probably not try that until I am more physically fit aka never at this rate). We decided to rent a canoe and called the number on their website and reserved a spot for Sunday morning. We packed sunblock, lots of water, a lunch, snacks, and drove out to Moscow TN to the rendezvous spot. They took us in vans a couple miles down to where they launched us off and gave us some brief instructions during the ride. It took us about 4 hours to get down the river back to where our cars were parked. I really could write a novel about what happened to us during the canoe ride (think almost colliding with a snake, attempting to rescue a poor couple that capsized and thanking God it wasn't us, seeing GORGEOUS nature that I did not know existed out here) but I'll sum it up as awesome!!! so many stories to tell about that trip. Some tips: 1. Call the number when you want to make a reservation. It fills up quickly 2. Definitely pack lunch - there's a little spot in the middle of the trip where you can "park" your canoe/kayak and stop to rest and eat. 3. Pack lots of water and sunblock! 4. Pay the extra bucks to go on the guided tour if you are directionally challenged or nervous about never having canoed/kayaked before. There were some spots where the signs are confusing and we definitely spent 10+ minutes trying to redirect ourselves back onto the right path. They also do nice stuff on the tour like show you where beaver dams are, etc 5. Waterproof your camera if you bring one When we went, the spots were completely filled up but one of the tour guides said that surprisingly, not many people in Memphis know this place exists but apparently word still gets out somehow because they have a lot of people that come from out of state. I feel like I just wrote everything and yet wrote nothing. This was the best thing we have ever done in/around Memphis. Give the website a look if you're interested!

I can't wait to go back!

You will find a few picturesque bridges along the way and the trails are well defined and easy to navigate. This park is linked to the Germantown Greenway so, you can run/hike/bike here for miles. It is a beautiful park. The park has an adequate amount of spots to park in in its free private lot. You will find picnic tables and benches along the section of the park that runs along the lake, a very select few of which have a small shelter over them. I cannot confirm or deny if the lake is stocked or not, but there were a lot of people fishing there during my visit. One negative of the park, that it is out of its control is that certain of it areas are prone to flooding after a rain. It is nothing too bad though. This park is well maintained and is a diamond in the rough. I really enjoyed it. It lacks many of the amenities that I look for in a park, nut I took it for what it was, a nature trail park, and found enjoyment in that. It does not have any playgrounds and I could not find any restrooms. There aren't any other recreation activities either such as tennis, basketball or green space, but this park works and I highly recommend checking it out if you are looking for a nice place to hike or relax on a small lake.
