Several months ago, I visited this branch of Wells Fargo to accomplish two things: 1. Close a…read moredeceased relative's checking account, and 2. Remove the "auto pay" fee of the relative's Well's Fargo mortgage since the checking account for the auto pay (at another institution) was closed. It took more than 90 minutes to just close the checking account which had a balance of $50.00. The "auto pay" was never resolved. The "personal banker" spent at least 30 minutes of the appointment updating MY profile (since my mortgage is with Wells Fargo) and didn't tell me he was doing this. I now receive solicitations from Wells Fargo on a weekly basis. It was offensive that during a difficult time, they felt like they still had to hijack information for their own purposes. I did not ask for my "profile" to be updated. If Wells Fargo didn't have that information for the last ten years, there is no reason they need it now (except to send me junk mail). He also had to go ask a superior how to close a checking account of a deceased person, and then had to call an automated number, go through several menus, and then get a "live" person to figure out how to close the checking account. I am pretty sure that people with checking accounts pass away regularly and I was stunned to learn that no one at the branch seemed to know what do to. And, as the final show of incompetence and lack of sensitivity, when the "manager"/notary came out to have me sign the final paperwork, she called me by my deceased relative's name. When I pointed out to her that I was not the decedent, you might think she would say, "Oh, I'm sorry." But no. She snottily said "Well, that's what the paperwork says." Totally unprofessional and incompetent "personal banker" and "managerial" employees. I will never step foot in that place again.

This is the only location in Tucson and it also has a 24-hour outdoor ATM and drive-thru windows. They've been around since 1929, so if you would rather keep your money at a not-for-profit institution in your own community (instead of handing it over to giant corporate banks which invest in things that may or may not align with your values)...check out your friendly local credit union!

This basically ends up being a poor tax. This last year was hard for me, and the credit union made it a little harder. But it is likely that any other bank or credit union will have the same policy or worse.
