March 22nd, 2025: Friday night was an 8 Course Omakase Dinner ($58/person) for my friends and I. Immediately I ordered a Takasago Plum ($12). It's a Japanese plum/apricot infused with junmai sake from Ishikawa, Japan. It smelled like whiskey, but I throughly loved it. It was sweet and fruity, a great drink to sip on. Now into the 8 courses: 1st course - Agebitashi: We thought we'd be getting eggplant, but think it was zucchini. Either way, it was soaked in what tasted like light dash and soy sauce based broth. We really liked this. 2nd course: Japanese sweet potato tempura with maple ginger cheese sauce and almond slices. It tasted really good, not greasy at all. True Japanese style tempura. 3rd course: Two slices of Atlantic salmon sashimi and two slices of yellow fin tuna sashimi. We were impressed with the light flavour, wasn't super fishy tasting at all. 4th course - Kaijiru: Claim miso soup with Asari Manila clams. Very flavourful. 5th course: Their signature grilled Yakitori skewers. One was chicken, one was cherry tomatoes and the other was pork belly. The pork belly was melt in your mouth, one of our favourites. 6th course: Aburi Salmon rolls with cream cheese. It was fire-tourced in-front of us. These were bigger than expected, we were getting full by this part. 7th course: Half size tonkotsu ramen. It was topped with a chain pork slice, half egg, bamboo and nori seaweed. This was my favourite. The depth of flavour in this bowl is astounding. I also whole heartedly love warm, marinated eggs. 8th course: Hand made vanilla icecream. Good finish to the night. We were very full by the end and were happy for a light finish. All of us were left extremely happy. Service was great and attentive. All in all, took us just over 2hrs for everything. We were very full by the end of it. I highly recommend this dinner if you love Japanese food. March 28th, 2025: Today I wanted to try the Rising Sun Pop-Up Ramen in Tipsy Samurai ! They're open week day lunch hours. It was a genuine Japanese experience! Very similar to Ichiran's solo dining experience in Japan. In this case, you don't have to come solo. On my paper, I got a 20oz ($11), with Star Premium Tonkotsu Pork Broth. I added on roasted garlic oil ($1.5), 2 pieces of pork with a marinated egg ($4), buttered corn ($1), Naruto fish cakes ($1), and green onion ($1). Totalling $19.50 before tax. I really enjoyed it! It's a fun way to experience ramen, have a quick lunch and it tasted good. My only suggestion is that they also make a block for noodle texture. My noodles were firm, when I would have liked medium or soft noodles. But, I will write this down next time either way. Also! They don't accept tips! This is a huge reflection of Japanese culture. It's very much a serve yourself experience. You literally just sit down, fill out your form, give your form to the bar, grab your own water and sit down. They only bring you your food, check on you once and clean up after you. If you decide to tip, the tips go to charity. read more

I will preface this by saying I DO NOT leave reviews...ever. I think this is my first restaurant review. For the most part, if I have a subpar experience, I just shrug my shoulders. In this case, I had fairly bad experience, and was also prompted to provide a review. I was initially excited to try this place out, as I read good things about it, and love Japanese food. While the taste was pretty good, I was terribly disappointed with the portion size and cost. I expected it to be a somewhat expensive meal, but was pretty shocked when it came time to pay. I ate with my wife and my young son. I am a fairly thin person (150 lbs), my wife is petite, and my son is only 5 years old. We ordered the kinpira, sweet potato tempura, 6 yakitori skewers, dynamite sushi roll, and salmon sashimi. With one child's drink and 2 waters, this came to a total of $75. Below is a breakdown on portions. -kinpira ($5.00): tiny bowl -tempura sweet potato ($12.00): large portion, but quite mushy -yakitori chicken thigh ($3.50): small strip of chicken, 1-2 bites -yakitori pork belly ($3.50): 2 very small cubes -yakitori tsukune ($3.00): 3 very small balls -yakitori bacon wrapped qual eggs ($3.00): 2 pieces -yakitori zucchini ($2.50): 4 tiny 1/2 slices -yakitori bessa mushroom ($2.50): 1 large piece -tipsy dynamite roll ($15): large, but couldn't be picked up without falling apart (even with hands) -salmon sashimi ($8.50): 4 good-sized pieces, but tough, with some browning on edges What this amounted to was a bunch of starters/Hors-D'Oeuvres. None of us were filled, and we had to stop on the McDonald's across the parking lot on the way home. I was familiar with how small yakitori can sometimes be (I've been to Japan), but this was a bit extreme. My friend ordered the cherry tomato yakitori, and he got 2 small tomatoes...for $2.50. That's quite the markup. Perhaps the ramen is a better value ($14-15 small, $18-19 regular), as we saw that most of the other patrons were having it. I may go back again to try it out, but can't see myself ever having the rest of the menu. read more

This was my first time at the Tipsy Samurai. It's a cozy establishment that could have a better ambiance by dimming the lights to enhance the dining experience. We sampled the flight of sake and would order it again. The tempura mushroom dish was such a pleasant surprise, and we were grateful our server recommended it. (Not sure it would hold up for take-out, though.) The kimchi--such a great blend of flavors and a nice balance of tanginess and a little spice. The chirashi was visually appealing and had decent flavors. The creamy udon was not my favorite, but my friend loved it! For me, it was too much like a Japanese-style alfredo, so it's all about personal preference. Our server was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the food, which we really appreciated. The Tipsy Samurai is worth trying; it's a great spot, and we'd go back again. read more

I am so glad they are still opening during the COVID-19, we ordered to take out, love the chicken heart, it is delicious, kids loves Takoyaki, tempura is a little bit disappointed,also the dish is very tiny. Not too good, not too bad. read more

Very tasty food! We started with the yakitori combo of chicken, shrimp and pork belly. You get 2 skewers of each. The pork belly was my favourite! For mains, we had the chicken katsu sandwich, the pork sandwich and the udon noodles with mussels. Everything was delicious and we'll definitely be back! read more

I pulled in here on the way to the airport because I didn't want fast food, and this place was incredible. I've been to Japan 60 times, and this guy has it nailed. Yakitori was awesome, tempura fantastic, tonkatsu rice bowl just like in Japan. And he has Hibiki Harmony whiskey??!! Wow. Can't wait to come back to Regina to go here again. read more

I've been anticipating the opening of this resto for a while now and just managed to have supper with hubby tonight. The ambiance is hip starting with the modern minimalist layout, full wall of Japanese inspired graffiti, urban music muted in the background, and cool lighting seen through the glass walls of the resto's facade. Service is supreme and chill at the same time. It's seat yourself style anywhere you want so you can take a booth or hang out by the bar in the middle of the resto. Also, the servers take your orders quick and manages to cater to you anytime you need it without seeming pushy or popping in nonstop. You know they're attentive as they come just at the right time when you need them. Now the FOOD. I can't help but rave about their Yakitoris!!! So these are selections of meat in skewers that they barbecue on top of charcoal and baste with the most authentic Japanese tasting sauce i've ever tasted in Regina! Like the reviews above, DO try the pork belly BUT be adventurous and try em all! You won't regret it. It looks like this resto is partnered with Wann Izakaya and they use Wann's Ramen bone broth BUT the ramen here tastes SO MUCH BETTER! We ordered the black garlic ramen and The saltiness is balanced with all the other spices and toppings in the broth. We also ordered gyudon. Yes Gyudon which not a single Japanese resto seems to serve in Regina. A bit of a modern twist with the edamame but the soul of the dish is well captured in the oniony sweet soy each tender slice of beef provides and the mixture of the egg yolk and the sauce enveloping the grains of rice just made my heart so happy! The servings are pretty good sized and come out fast. The alcoholic selections are pretty great and varied. Will definitely come back to try everything else. Well recommended. read more
