I bought a lovely pair of sandals here but when I wore them, they dug into the soles of my feet. I knew they didn't take returns once they had been worn, but I called and explained that I had only worn them outside for about 15 minutes. He said bring them in. I did. Lester took one look at them and said "Of course we'll take these back!" They really were in almost new condition. Then he helped me find the most comfortable sandals I've ever had. Tip Top Shoes has really amazing costumer service. I have brought each of my kids to their Kids location (2 doors down) for their first shoes. The staff are so knowledgeable and patient. We went this week to get my oldest measured properly and get new shoes for school. I recently made an online purchase from this store and was incorrectly charged sales tax for the sneakers. Sales tax follows the state of delivery, not the state of origination. I sent three separate emails stating this and was completely ignored. I'm reporting this business to the NYC Department of Finance as I feel this is intentional tax fraud. read more

A few years ago, I purchased a pair of Champion closed toed "fisherman style" sandals. They were not super pricey and over time they began to break so I started looking for a new pair. Target no longer carried them, Champion no longer manufactured them and so I headed off to Dick's Sporting Goods to find something similar. No dice (not in store anyhow). I went to three local malls and not one had anything close to what I was looking for. The closest Macy's to me looks like a hurricane hit it after a bull ran through the shoe section. I kind of gave up and figured at some point I'd go online to see what I could find. While hanging out in the Upper West Side one day I came across Tip Top Shoes and I figured maybe they'd have something I was looking for. And I was right! Service was fantastic. A salesman came up to me and was friendly, boisterous and knowledgable. I wound up getting a pair of Keen Men's Newport H2's. I called the store before coming on !2/3/24. A man named Harold answered the phone. I asked is the Black Cyber sale of 20% apply in the store? He replied yes and stated come to me! I did and Harold was professional and personable. I only intended to purchase one pair but ended up with 2. Harold was never pushy and allowed me to decide. I never felt pressured which I don't like. the good: the selection was decent, pretty well varied. returns are super easy. one of the guy who worked there seemed really genuinely friendly (idk his name but he had cool skull-shaped hair rings) but unfortunately that wasn't who ended up helping us the bad: my boyfriend and i went looking for shoes for both of us and were "helped" by two different people, both of whom were pretty brusque, seemed in a rush, and clearly didnt care about anything but making a sale. it's been awhile since i've bought shoes from an unfamiliar brand and i wasn't super sure of what to expect sizing-wise, particularly of the dr martens i was trying out for the first time. i tried out a couple of shoes from different brands, and in both cases they clearly didn't fit at all, although i didnt realize it at the time bc the salesman was persuasive. my heel kept slipping in both of them, and he just told me i needed to tie the laces super tight and then with enough wear they'd conform to my feet and not to worry about it. when i asked him how sturdy dr martens are and how long they last, he said i'd be "wearing them in my 80s" (i'm in my 30s, so that's what, 50 years) i was feeling pretty pressured and a bit suspicious but i really wanted the shoes to work, so i bought one pair and left the other. figured if it turned out the salesman was spinning me a yarn i'd return the first pair and have dodged a bullet with the second. an excellent decision, as it turned out. when i got home, i did my research and realized that neither pair fit, you're not supposed to tie your laces super tight and breaking them in isnt going to sort out dramatic heel slippage-- maybe just a tiny bit, but definitely not what i was dealing with. i ended up returning the dr martens (no issues there) and discovering that there's an actual dr martens store in herald square, so i decided to give that a shot in case different models were sized differently. i'm between sizes so i'd sized up at Tip Top (the size down was impossible to fit my foot into) but i figured it just wasn't meant to be with that model. but at the dr martens store the sales clerk told me that typically if you're between sizes you just wear an insole. she put one into the shoes for me, let me try them out with the insole, and it was massively better! anyway i'll be avoiding Tip Top in future unless i catch word of a sales associate who isn't trying to screw you out of a bunch of cash and/or send you to a physical therapist. read more

I have been to Tip Shop Shoes a handful of times. This shoe store really gives me old school vibes. All of the salespeople here are very friendly and helpful. They are also very knowledgeable about the different brands and styles of shoes and how they should fit. They carry a large variety of shoes and high quality brands. Perfect place to get the best walking shoes. I recently booked a vacation and needed some water shoes plus I wanted the five finger toe shoes by virbram (might have spelled this wrong) they had both of the shoes I needed and the customer service is so nice and friendly. The toe shoes run a bit small and they exchanged them for me with zero hassle. The store was quite crowded but they still gave me amazing service. Your response to this place is really a matter of personal style. I've found that the moment you walk in salespeople are swarming you. I expected them to start dueling last time I was here. And yet they are knowledgable (if only to sell you their shoes). You're not going to get any of the hipster crowd here, and the last time I saw anyone under forty in this place it was on Halloween to ask for treats. But if you're on the UWS and need a comfortable pair of shoes because you've been walking around in your monk strap dressers all day, I suppose you could do worse. read more

My podiatrist told me to go to Tip Top shoe and get my feet measured by Harold. Harold is the best salesman, and understood that I needed a shoe with a roomy toe box. In the past 2 years I've bought 3 pairs of shoes there (2 are more like sneakers, 1 pair of slightly dressier boots). They are all comfortable, wear well, and my podiatrist couldn't be happier. They were about average price, and the quality is very good. Harold steered me towards the boots off season and I saved quite a bit buying them early. I miss buying shoes for style as well as comfort, but my feet are happier than they've ever been. After the holidays I'm. heading back to Tip Top for a pair of every day walking shoes. Great to have this independent local shoe shop but the customer service is lacking. I did an online order for pickup the gave me the wrong style. I emailed to ask about returning / exchanging, they said I could come in to do so but got no apology or offer for rectification. I went in person to exchange for the right style and was told the style I had ordered wasn't even in stock (why was I able to order it online then?) and again, no apology. The " local" Shoe store like the ones I grew up with are very hard to find. Tip top is one of the GEMS. The owner is just so very friendly and knows shoes, sizing my foot and my families better than anyone. Certain brand I cannot wear because of my wide foot and they know. Very competitive pricing. Good on sales, not so good on service. Which is not what you want from an independent shoe store. The sales part was a breeze. I had some Timberland walking shoes that were falling apart, and the salesperson recommended snazzy Eccos, promising I could beat the heck out of them, and they'd last. Plus, they had Gore-Tex technology for comfort and humidity wicking. They were not cheap -- north of $250, if I recall correctly to the late summer of 2020, but I bought them. Everything went smoothly, and I wore them out of the store, happy as an urban walker could be. All good for a time, but 15 months into moderate but not impossibly active use, I noted the interior of both shoes was wearing out behind the top of my heel. Right through the fabric. I have literally never seen that happen before, so on a recent trip to NYC, I brought them in to see what they could do. I've never seen three salespeople -- older guy, younger guy, younger woman -- deny ability to assist, or even offer sympathy, in my life. One even said that it was the way I was taking off my shoes. Lookit. I'm 65 years old. I've been wearing shoes a very long time. I've owned 250 pair in my lifetime, if not more. I have never seen this kind of wear pattern, ever, on the interior fabric behind the heel. And no, I have not developed Trumpian bone spurs. There's a problem in the shoe, and the best I got was a diffident, "You can always write to the company." How about, "That shouldn't happen." I'm going to have to take these shoes to a repair shop now and see if they can be patched. The salespeople didn't even take a photo to send to Ecco. Sad service. Do better, guys. read more

My 87 year old mother, Genii Charnin, former Broadway dancer-WEST SIDE STORY (who had been ill most of the year) came alive suddenly when Howard fit her with new shoes. Terrible dancers feet plagued her and she refused to part with an old pair which not only made her trip and fall, but were damaged beyond repair. She also suffers from dementia which messes with your balance. So new shoes were crucial to her survival, to get around and also stay vertical. Howard brought out several pairs of shoes for her to try. He tended to her obstacles-wider foot, pain on the side. And after the 5th pair she said YES! To two pairs! Howard revealed he Latin dances-so he got her up and we got THIS! We haven't seen this since 2000. The hard-selling salesman convinced me that the kitten heels just needed a slight adjustment by a shoe repair to make them less loose and that the wedges were what to wear for flat feet. So I came home happily with 3 new pairs of footwear. But my neighborhood shoemaker could not figure out how to tweak the first pair I gave him--and now they are too tight, hurt and unwearable. And the second pair, unworn, I can't even give it away. The wedges have no arch-- so I use them around the house until my feet hurt. The experience taught me one thing: I should have taken my flat feet elsewhere. read more
