I apologize to those Yelpers who came across this listing hoping for a creepy, gothic enterprise. Or perhaps you were seeking a unique topiary company for your yard a la Edward Scissorhands? Actually, if you thought of Edward Scissorhands - you aren't that far off. Do you recall the scenes where Edward cut hair? That is precisely what Tiny Knives is: a hair salon/stylist. Coincidentally, I'm often compared to Winona Ryder (who also starred in the film) in appearance and have a pixie haircut which he donned for years. It is VERY difficult to find a stylist who excels at pixie haircuts. How does Tiny Knives stack up? Tiny Knives is the brain child of hair stylist/cosmetologist Devon who brought her hair skills from Oklahoma to the big city of Los Angeles. As sole proprietor and stylist; Devon houses Tiny Knives inside the Salon Republic space in the recently-remodeled Burbank Towne Center Mall. This means that one can only access Devon by appointment-only; as Tiny Knives is a one-chair operation and the glorious Burbank Salon Republic is not open to the public (Devon will escort you to her rented space by the third floor Burlington and East Parking garage Salon Republic entrance at the time of your appointment). I came across Tiny Knives on Yelp and contacted Devon to make an appointment for a free, 15-min hair consultation: I had to make sure she is an expert at pixie haircuts or this would be a no-go! Devon was polite and easy to communicate with via text and we set up the consultation. When I arrived, Devon was welcoming and friendly showing me to Tiny Knives. Although a one-chair cubical floor plan; Tiny Knives is still spacious and has touches of artsy, rockabilly flare with art pieces, healing crystals and even an antique organ! Devon listened to me describe how I like my pixie cut (I am VERY particular) and looked at my old photos of past A+ haircuts. She never came off as cocky or condescending and rather; showed her enthusiasm while reassuring me that she can indeed perform the haircut and thus we went ahead setting up an appointment for the next week. Note: Devon has limited work hours but graciously works with your schedule. Devon was on-time with my scheduled haircut and once again kindly welcomed me to her work space. Now, don't expect Devon to be a bubbly, fake stylist. She is a bit more reserved and serious but that doesn't mean she is rude - just simply that she needs time to open up. Besides, I can't stand bubbly folks so this is a perfect match for me. During the hour-duration of my cut; Devon exhibited her top-of-the-line skills by effortlessly shaping and texturing my pixie while occasionally explaining what she was doing and asking me permission to proceed. It was obvious she was a professional and wasn't rushing the process which SO many stylists tend to do with my pixie. The one-chair Salon Republic space of Tiny Knives is also perfect for those wanting a quiet environment and one-on-one VIP service. I loved having Devon's complete attention! How was the final product? Excellent! Devon worked her magic and my cut was perfect. I judge stylists based on how well my haircut grows out and three weeks later (my hair grows like a weed); I can safely say it is growing out great! It should be noted that Tiny Knives accepts cash, card and electronic payment (Zelle, Venmo, Paypal) but if you prefer cash (like myself) then let her know when booking in order to ensure proper change. Tiny Knives also conveniently offers online booking making everything easy-peasy. Tiny Knives may not be cutting bushes into the shapes of animals; but it is an amazing local, small business that will create a piece of art with your hair follicles. Once you make an appointment online, you get an email with a set of instructions on how to find your way to her space, and it's super easy to follow. I am a hairstylist so naturally I've been cutting my own hair for awhile because I didn't want to ask my coworkers after a long shift to work on me, nor did I wanna stay after work. Not only did Devon give me a perfect haircut, her attention to detail was inspiring and her calm demeanor made me feel really relaxed. Devon is phenomenal. I went to her with a grown-out, lockdown-style home dye job, inch-long gray roots, and frizzy, out of control hair that hadn't been cut since 2019. Luckily, she is a coloring genius and meticulously transformed my hair with highlights and lowlights. So when I go to a new hair stylist I give them an idea of what I want and then go by their guidance especially when it comes to color because I have dark brown hair and always want it lighter or more blonde but I'm usually apprehensive about it.
