The Old Parsonage - The Old Parsonage, Boscastle

We stayed at four B&Bs during a recent trip to England, and The Old Parsonage was the best by a…read moremile. The drive took longer than expected, and we got lost trying to locate it, but when we arrived at The Old Parsonage, Marg greeted us warmly and offered us tea and cake to help us unwind after our journey. Our room was on the second floor and featured the largest bathroom in the house. With a shower and tub, and a big window that let in plenty of light, the bathroom was pure luxury. The room was also quite spacious and pleasantly decorated. The breakfasts at The Old Parsonage were superb and used local ingredients. The porridge was delicious, and the eggs were incredibly fresh. I was delighted to see so many vegetarian options on the menu as well. Both Marg and Morag were extremely accommodating and helpful. We took several walks while in the area and Morag was happy to suggest routes and places to stop. A basket full of guide books and walks was available in the breakfast room and guests could borrow them as needed. The B&B is within walking distance of The Napoleon Inn, a very pleasant pub, or a short drive from the heart of Boscastle.

We spent two nights (pity; we would have enjoyed more) at the Old Parsonage, and it was one of the…read morebest B&B experiences I've ever had. Our room was enormous and beautifully appointed with a serene modern elegance; the bathroom was very up-to-date; everything was impeccably clean. I've been in some B&Bs where everything is rule-bound; at the Old Parsonage, the tone is relaxed and flexible. The breakfast selection was extensive (they offer a daily menu for you to choose from) and delicious! The hostesses provide lots of information about what to do and where to eat in the area. I wish I'd had time to get to know them better.

Woo-hoo! Talk about dreams being fulfilled and standing in the same spot that Luisa and Martin…read more(from Doc Martin) have been in! I didnt stay at the hotel, and unfortunately, we arrived a bit too early to eat dinner, so cant really provide any reviews relating to either of those things. What I can however talk about is the thrill and sheer exuberance I felt, walking around in the parking lot of the Old School Hotel, seeing the Doc's house, the lovely Harbor bay below, Bert and Al Large's restaurant - it was like visiting an old familiar house! The staff here were super friendly, even when I do think the must get super tired of all the gawking tourists, and cant wait to come back here another time and hopefully this time, experience dinner too! Is there a statute of limitations on Yelp! reviews? I stayed here in 2007, not knowing who Doc…read moreMartin was (I've since become a big fan of the show.) In any case, I came here without a reservation, and I was promptly assigned to the Chemistry room. The room was small (but I did ask for the cheapest they had), but I remember how comfortable it was. I was a big fan of all the pillows on the bed, into which I sank with pleasure. It had an ensuite bathroom, and it was very warm and cozy. I especially liked the view across the harbor. They had a very nice little bar near the reception, and the dinner I had there (fish) was elegant and excellent. A nice couple from Cornwall that I had drank with earlier even invited me to join them. I still remember the conversation. I'd highly recommend staying here while in Port Iaasic.

Pengenna Pasties - A bargain compared with nearby places

Not a scone connoisseur, but so far best scones I've had in the Devon/Cornwall area. They're…read morenothing remarkable to look at, nor very puffed up, but they're a balanced combination of cookie (crisp and crumbly) on the outside while fluffy and crumbly on the inside with a slight sweetness. Their pasties, their specialty, I'm not really a fan of. They're enormously overstuffed, but the crust is tasteless and the filling is mostly potato with less than 20% actual meat. However, filling was balanced in flavor. Guess I just prefer the pastries, because I also preferred their Apple Turnover to the pasties.

Well after two terrible Cornish pasty experiences - one just a few paces from this place (King…read moreArthur's Arms) was singularly dreadful and tasteless - we decided one third and last try. Glad we did!! I had the beef pasty, my wife the lamb and mint. They were big, tasty, juicy and worth our time and money. According to our waitress Pengenna are the only vendor in Tintagel who make their own pasties - according to her the other places just buy them frozen which perhaps explains why they are soooo dreadful. If you don't believe me try one next time you are at Kings Cross station in London - from a little stall you can buy a pasty much much better than our first two in Cornwall Anyway - our pasties were very good, probably 50% bigger than down the road and not much more than 1/2 the price!!!! No comparison!
