This Tinderbox is inside Hillhead Subway station. It's on your left after the ticket window (the one with humans inside) before you go through the turnstiles to the platforms.
Last autumn I watched as this Tinderbox sprang to life at the end of my 30 minute commute from Dennistoun. Though delighted to have yet another option for a cheeky coffee on my way to work, it took me a while to actually try it out. I blame the odd inertia that grabs hold of commuters en masse, but eventually, I peeled away from the herd and got myself a regular latte to takeaway (£2.50) and was well rewarded!
Unlike the Starbucks and S'mug further along my trajectory, there is almost NEVER a queue at this Tinderbox and the quality of coffee - like its sister cafes on Byres Road and in Merchant City - is superb! Though my go-to in the morning is a latte, the icebox version (latte over ice) is nice on a warm (relatively speaking) afternoon. I know, I'm a one trick pony when it comes to coffee habits, but they have a full European coffee menu and a selection of cakes. The baristas know their stuff and are really lovely - it's always a bonus to see a pleasant face first thing before facing the ol' inbox!
Hopefully business will drum up for them (it seems pretty much deserted every time I'm there, but maybe I'm there too early at 8am for the droves) but equally I hope they remain at my beck and call when I go in for a latte first thing ;)
Happy coffee-ing! read more
