Unfortunately, there seemed to be confusion throughout the process. Three days before delivery, I was asked again what flavor the cake was, despite having already provided that information. I was also told I would receive photos the night before the event, but I did not receive them until about 1:00 p.m. on the day of delivery, leaving little opportunity to request any changes before the cake was delivered at 3:00 p.m. While the cake was neat and professionally assembled, it did not reflect the vision we had discussed. One of our biggest disappointments was that the King Kong image was so small that it was difficult to see and did not stand out as the centerpiece of the cake. We expected Kong to be a much more prominent part of the design. The darker, vintage, Depression-era feel from the movie that we had discussed was also missing. The black ball decorations on top were another disappointment. They did not fit the King Kong theme and looked more like birthday or baby shower decorations than a graduation cake inspired by the film. In addition, we were never told that these decorations were not edible. One child assumed they were edible, bit into one, and hurt his teeth. Had we known, we would have removed them or warned our guests beforehand. Adding to the confusion, when the cake was delivered to the graduation celebration, the baker wished my son a "Happy Birthday," which made it seem as though she was not fully aware of the occasion despite our previous discussions. The cake was not terrible, but for a $200 custom cake, we expected better communication, closer attention to the details we discussed, and a final design that more accurately reflected the theme we requested. We also found the cake to be slightly dry. My sons name was added to the cake board without being discussed with me beforehand which further contributed to the feeling that the final design differed from what we had envisioned. Unfortunately, the overall experience did not meet our expectations.
