I was being careless and dropped my Yamaha alto saxophone during a college pep game. The E key was finicky in that the pad had a huge leak and the horn was unplayable. The rod controlling the key was bent out of place. Furthermore, the G# key was also affected by this damage as well as the key guard on the bottom. The bell was also bent out of place. I brought it in, and was helped by the same man who did a fantastic job in the mantainenance and tuneup of my instrument 4 months prior, Sam. When I first met him, immediately he related to me, saying that he also played a Yamaha alto sax and loved the horn. He knows saxophones inside and out. Immediately, he stopped what he was working on and took 45 minutes to thoroughly check what was wrong and got everything back in it's proper place again! Once he was done, he played it up and down testing each key to make sure that he fixed the problem. This is excellent quality control! And for a very reasonable price considering the damage. The whole staff makes sure that you are a very satisfied customer and that you are satisfied with the sound of your horn! Tim's is the place to go! read more

My daughter broke a piece on her saxophone that we did not purchase at this store. I took it to the store that we purchased it from, and without looking at it they told me it would be a week to repair. I brought it to Tim's to see if they might be a little quicker. Boy was I surprised!! The repair department took the time to look at the instrument, and it ended up being a 30 second repair. Then, they went above and beyond to take a look at it and made some adjustments that took 3 minutes to make it back to new condition. Awesome friendly service, and obviously a company that has the desire to take care of their customers and make them lifetime customers. Went there for a trial with Virginia for piano lessons. She started the session by asking me for the payment and handed me a contract! The place was super noisy, could hear other folks in adjacent rooms playing instruments, could barely hear myself :( Virginia was serious and kept looking at the time, more of a corporate executive personality than a musician / artist personality. Asked her if she would do classes at home or anywhere else in a quiet setting? Did not answer me , just gave me a strange look... They have a lot of cool instruments at Tim's , the stars are for the store but would not recommend taking classes there. read more

Plus I didn't realize how far it was from our house. Anyway we really lucked out, Matthew the store manager was so kind to give us a quick run down on what we missed. He showed my son and I how to maintain his cornet and provided us with notes on how to be successful, as daily, weekly and monthly maintenance checklist. Matthew was great! He totally made our trip worth the drive. I must admit I wish I had made the drive sooner and rented my son's cornet from them. No offense to the store we rented from but Matthew totally sold us. I took an electric violin in because I couldn't keep it in tune for more than a few minutes at a time. They fixed the issue on the spot and didn't even charge me (it was just loose pegs), and showed me how to get the pegs really well seated so I could prevent the problem the next time I restring the violin (I'd never encountered that issue on my acoustic instrument!). read more

Great service! A few years ago I found a used saxophone for my teenage son on Craigslist. Since I didn't know anything about the instrument, I called Tim's to see if they would inspect it for me. They said that they would inspect it for free! I met the seller at Tim's, and not only did the technicians inspect the saxophone, but they made some minor adjustments for free. I drove from Fresno (170 miles) in order to visit Tim's Music and try out several euphoniums which they had available. I was met by Jim Hart with whom I had spoken on the phone and he gave me a complete tour of the facility and then introduced me to Bailey who is their low brass expert. They had four euphoniums for me to try including the J Packer that I was interested in and provided my a practice room, some music, mouthpieces, and helpful hints. I was having problems getting the instruments to play in tune and after a couple of suggestions were not working, Scott, the owner came in, and worked with me for about fifteen minutes. He is also a euphonium player himself and gave some excellent suggestions and then sat down with his own horn and played with me. He had stated that all my intonation problems would resolve with just a couple of rehearsals with my own band, and after about five minutes of playing together he showed me the tuner and most of my problems had already resolved. In all everyone was exceptionally friendly and helpful, even to the extent that I made my purchase on the spot. I will definitely recommend them to my friends and fellow musicians even though it is a long drive for us. read more

Unfortunately I did not know of Tim's Music a few months back when I was looking to upgrade my 50 year old student trumpet. After much searching and a somewhat apprehensive ebay purchase I ended up with something not as advertised- even though the seller had over 2k feedback at 100%. Anyways, I've been in Tim's several times now and have used their repair dept. for my recent online purchase, and to purchase several small ticket items. I also had the opportunity to use a practice room to try several mouthpieces and trumpets- both new and used. Bailey has given me a brief tour of this amazing place. Everyone I've spoken to- Adam, Jim, Kennedy, Christian, Matt and Tim have been very courteous and passionate about music- very impressed with the overall knowledge and professionalism of the staff. As a business owner I really appreciate what has been created here. As a trumpeter when I'm ready to upgrade I can test, make a purchase, and then sell my trumpet on consignment there. There's also the hall where one could try the instrument out in a much larger than practice room. Getting to feel and hear different models, and ask a few questions can save someone a lot of money and frustration down some equipment or learning curve trails. Not sure how they do it at such good pricing either- I was doing online research for the model and materials on my favorite play while there, and of course ads kept coming up- Tim's pricing beat the ad prices even before any shipping was added. My child took some piano lessons with Virginia. We didn't last. This teacher is too strict, mean, and monotonous. How could someone be in the profession of teaching when you're not even good with kids? My child was discouraged and did not look forward to piano lessons. Staff is unprofessional. My ex has an account with them. I told their staff multiple times that I divorced. I had contacted them in the past to remove my contact info (ex used my contact info). While I was there, their staff asked me for his contract info. Their staff even ask if my ex still live with me at the same address!!! Then, i was asked to provide ex's current address (give me a break), so they can contact him for his past due. We are divorced, how would anyone except that I know where my ex lives. After visiting 2 other music shops and being disappointed with service, we took our old saxophone to Tim's for repair. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. I brought a professional tenor trombone (Bach 42) to Tim's for cleaning, rotor alignment, and slide lock adjustment. Although the slide worked - IMO - VERY WELL, (moved freely, no dent's, no hang-ups through all positions) I was told that a yearly realignment was recommended. Unfortunately that resulted in severe problems. After picking up the horn, it was obvious that it now moved with resistance and beyond 5th position, it actually hung up (metal to metal). I live in Monterey and after a few weeks, I brought is back to be reworked and corrected. After the horn was picked up and returned to me, it AGAIN exhibited serious flaws. A brass repairman in Santa Cruz evaluated the slide, and determined that work done by Tim's in fact caused the problems. This included the outer upper slide brace protruding into the outer tubing, causing it to "catch" as it moved across and beyond the inner slide shoulder. After TWO repairs, 12 hr. round trips to Sacramento, they offered to try a THIRD time. No "professional" shop should ever put a client in this position. I ended up shipping the horn to L.A., where it was properly repaired. I was so frustrated, I sold the horn. Bottom line: I lost $300 (repair bill at Tims's) plus time and travel expenses twice. I DO NOT recommend Tim's for professional, quality trombone slide work. Second pro tip: if your slide is working well, DO NOT get talked into an annual "realignment". "If it ain't broke...well, you know the rest." read more
