I'm writing this review on behalf of my husband. Background: my husband has a long history of…read moredental problems. He had to have all but one of his baby teeth pulled because the roots didn't dissolve. Not all of his adult teeth grew in, he had extensive orthodontia to correct this. Our children also inherited these dental issues. Nothing is worse than watching your kids have baby teeth with full roots pulled and the expense of the subsequent orthodontia afterwards. My husbands teeth objectively suck, but he takes good care of them. My husband made an appointment here after his established dentist closed their Louisville location and consolidated in Southern Indiana. He had two teeth with enamel erosion and was interested in getting crowns. He had no cavities. This practice not only refused to give him a cleaning, they spent over an hour berating him trying to convince him that his bad teeth were somehow his fault. Questioning his diet, lifestyle choices, etc. We have no unusual habits. We have good insurance and are very capable of paying for the dental care. The treatment by the staff made my husband further ashamed of a sensitive subject. He was seeking care and they quite literally turned him away. Do not recommend. Thank goodness my kids have a compassionate dentist.

One month I got a bill for $75, then a month later it was adjusted to a new amount I started to question their billing. When I was told my complete set of X-rays would be covered by insurance and I got a bill for $125 I called delta dental and was told they paid it. I called Hannah at Parkside and she said they send those out before insurance pays and was very confrontational about it. After my next cleaning I checked with my insurance and I was overcharged $32.50. Once again I called billing and was told they wouldn't know until it came through on their end. I was supposed to get a call in two weeks about my refund. Over 3 months later I called about my refund and a check was supposed to be mailed out within two weeks. It was not so I called and was told they would refund it to my card by the end of the week. A week later I went to Parkside about my refund. The lady upfront told me she had to check with the director even though she saw my credit in the system. I gave my credit info and am supposed to get a refund in the next two days. I have been getting the runaround over a small amount of money they owe me. It's simple to do a refund. They are all about money. They will charge $75 if you don't cancel within 48 hours, no exceptions. They have constantly called me before appointments often in the same day asking me to move my time for them.

The entrance closest to his office suite is the one facing State St. The medical office building houses several practices. I believe Dr. Wickel shares his space with one other doctor. The front desk employee was extremely nice and constantly smiling despite the busyness. The waiting area was neat and clean and spacious enough to accommodate many waiting patients without feeling crowded. The wait was indeed long. We waiting approximately 45 minutes before hearing our name. But, we didn't have to wait too long for Dr. Wickel once the nurse weighed and took my mothers' vitals. It's a rather long walk from the waiting room to where Dr. Wickel saw us. I'm not complaining. I actually found the huge and open space to be nice, although not typical. Dr. Wickel is a really nice doctor. I could tell he has bed-side manners. The soft skills that aren't always present in doctors. He was very personable, friendly, talkative, explained his concerns and assessments clearly and plainly. This made me very comfortable with his level of knowledge, experience, and sheer concern for the health of my mother. He even acknowledged and apologized for the long wait - I've experienced doctor's who don't do this. I found it welcoming and refreshing. After the doctor's visit finished, the nurse then escorted us to a much smaller waiting area to have another appointment scheduled. This particular wait wasn't long either and the young lady that scheduled the appointment was also friendly, talkative, and personable. I personally find these sort of interactions and traits between the doctor, his/her staff, and the patient to be few, far and in between. So when it happens, it's easily noticeable and refreshing. I see it as a relationship building opportunity between the patient and the doctor and her/her support staff, which is necessary and great.

I love the doctor himself, and the hygienists have always been friendly; however, my problem lies with the billing and front office. I've have several billing issues over the years, all due from a lack of proper communication and understanding, and seemingly misleading information and advisement. My first incident was years ago from an elective procedure I did at their encouragement, stating that I would have to pay up front, submit to insurance, and they would (more than likely) pay. Granted, she (the front office) didn't say they definitely 100% would pay, and I knew there was a chance they wouldn't, but she was almost sure they would. Well, they didn't... so $2500 later and seemingly some crazy coding issues, I never got any portion of that money back and the procedure didn't do what it was intended to do. As of recent, it's been the results of special cleanings following, again, a lack of proper communication as to what is happening. I'm just tired of dealing with the front office regarding these issues. Although the hygienists have always been friendly, there was almost always a new one every time I visited... either they have a HUGE turnover or they have some program for new hygienists upon graduation. The only people that are ALWAYS there are the doctor, Emily (hygienist), and Carolyn (front desk, billing, receptionist)... which, I believe are the doctor's daughter and wife.

Here I am 3 weeks later and still no breakdown of the supposed cost. Yet I get another automated email with a link to a new bill. Now it's been knocked down to $29. Still says it is from early January, and is described only as "previous balance." I wouldn't trust this place. They clearly no have idea what they're doing with billing.
