I have been going to Dr Riley for over twenty years. He makes you feel so comfortable in the exam, talks to you about concerns, and answers any questions you may have. The office is very cozy, and not too big so you don't feel overwhelmed with chaos... The staff is kind and friendly, which makes your visit to the DR not so traumatic . I highly recommend this office ! read more

Called this office to make an appointment and was told that Dr. Riley is retiring and no longer accepting new patients. Plan accordingly. read more

Sad News! Dr. Riley has officially retired which is great for him, but has been rough for me in locating someone as good as he was. He helped with childbirth, annual check ups, perimenopause, menopause to post menopause. I went to the office my records were shipped to on Cardinal Ct., near Sharp Memorial Hospital to be very disappointed.. I have this a 5-Star rating as Dr. Riley deserves 1000 stars. They do't make docs like this anymore! His bedside manner was top notch. He evened visited me in hospital when I had a minor surgery non-related. I need a cloned Dr. Riley! read more

Dr Riley is the absolute best! I read here that he is retiring which seems like it's for the best in the midst of this crazy pandemic. I will miss you so so much Dr Riley !! read more

We actually went on a Sharp Mary Birch Hospital Walk Through Tours and I expressed my dissatisfaction (privately) with my current OB GYN to one of the doctors. He and 2 female doctors who stood close by suggested I phone Dr Riley. (One of the reasons was, I really wanted to deliver natural and preferably no drugs, and my previous OB GYN was very pro cesarean. Of course it really is preference, but I wanted someone who would support me in my decision fully). So here I am, a patient of Dr Riley for 3month and I can not express how grateful I am I made the switch. He has taken the time to get to know me, my wants and he fully respected my decisions. DR Riley delivered my baby on Nov 8, 2016. He came in that night even though he was not on call, which doesn't always happen. A smooth delivery - 40min of pushing, no drugs, no tears. He made sure everything was fine before went home. Unfortunately 2 hours post delivery I started to get high blood pressure, so he came back to see if I was okay (2am). The next few days in hospital he came to check in and really showed sincerity and care. I would highly recommend Dr Riley!! read more

Horrible experience. It was very similar to the review that Skyeler left. I've had many male OBGYN's before and it's never bothered me until I saw Dr. Riley. I've never felt so uncomfortable with a doctor. He asked numerous questions that were extremely inappropriate and completely unrelated to what I was there for. I luckily found a new OBGYN who is great and I told her my experience with Dr. Riley. She said his questions and comments were 100% inappropriate and encouraged me to report him. She also said it was a pretty big deal that as an older experienced doctor, Dr. Riley should have known better than to see a female client alone in a room with no other nurse or worker in the room with me. He also shared way too much personal information about other clients that I did not need to know at all. I would be upset if I were them to hear that he was sharing my personal information with other patients, especially when it had nothing to do with my particular situation. This in itself was very unprofessional. No idea why so many reviews say he's great.. I've never felt upset with a doctor until my visit with Dr. Riley. read more

I LOVE Dr. Riley. I've been seeing him for a couple of years now since I moved to SD and I've never been more comfortable with a Gyno before. My sister reccomended him to me- she's been seeing him for the past 5 years and he's also delivered her first baby and will deliver the second one coming up here too. He's extremely personable and takes the time to chat his patients up and know whats going on with you at each appointment (gynecological issues or not). He tends to get a little cook-ey and has shared some crazy stories with me, but from what I can tell its his way of breaking the ice and making you feel comfortable and willing to open up with questions. His stories show you that he's seen and heard of an array of questions and concerns- yours definitely aren't the first . He explains everything in detail, and not "doctor-speak," making sure that you understand everything thats going on. My insurance doesn't cover him in-network, but I like him so much that I am willing to pay the out of network fees, if that tells you anything. ps- book early... he books out months in advance! read more

When I found out my regular OB would not be available to deliver my first son, I was a little bummed. However, it turned out that Dr. Riley was on-call that night, and I was so happy with how my delivery went that I chose him as my primary OB for my second son, who was just born on 4/13. Dr. Riley has pretty much seen it all, and has lots of great stories and insights into all things gynecological - as weird as that sounds. Throughout my nine months of pregnancy, when I would ask a question in an appt., he would pull up a stool, sit and cross his leg over a knee and say, "Funny you asked about that ..." and proceed to spend a good amount of time just talking with me and offering his thoughts and "war stories". I had a pager number for him and he was immediately responsive the one time I needed to reach out to him. He is direct, calm, and has a great sense of humor - these are all especially important qualities at "game time." Sadly, he ended up being out of town for my actual delivery this time, but his partner did an equally great job and I he called me a few days after the birth to congratulate me and tell me he wished he could have been there. Can't recommend him highly enough! read more

I love Dr. Riley! He is kind, caring, direct, and protective. I have seen him since college, it is a tragedy that I have not been able to go to him for the past 3+ years (due to very distressing circumstances). Dr. Riley was extremely protective of me the last time that I saw him, and he wanted me to report something horrible that occurred, that I wasn't ready to deal with. Regrettably, I tried to give the other party a chance to man up and to do the right thing, which he failed miserably... At least there is a caring male Ob Gyn out there! I should have taken his advice back then...I hope to be able to get back into his practice soon. read more

Dr. Riley is honest and can be blunt, which might be the reason for the negative experience described in the bad review. It sounds like he was trying to get information out of her to understand what's going on down there and she took it the wrong way. I have had similar conversations with Dr. Riley about post-baby sex, but you have to get over the fact that you're talking to a man and realize, he's a doctor who's trying to help you! OB's are supposed to talk to you about sex! I chose him because he was highly recommended by friends, and he was very supportive of delivering my first baby naturally, as I wished. Of course, nothing went as planned for labor as my water broke and I never went into labor. After 20 hours, Dr. Riley suggested that I should have a C-section. I resisted, going for my "all natural" plan. 36 hours later, after pitocin and all that, I was still sitting in the hospital twiddling my thumbs, still not in labor. I finally decided to listen to the advice he'd given me 16 hours earlier and had a beautiful baby boy. He is quirky, but he is great, upfront, and knows what he's doing. read more

Love Dr. Riley!!! He sure knows his stuff and is always so fun to be around. He really makes the appt comfortable and likes to get to know his patients. I really do look forward to my annuals with him. He is so helpful...once I had a female emergency and he called me on the phone to explain everything to me in easy terms for over 15 minutes. He really calmed my nerves. We're going to be getting ready to have another baby and I can only hope that we're still in San Diego so that Dr. Riley can be the OB. I can just picture him joking around with the hubby. read more

Dr. Riley is the best! He delivered my son and I couldn't have imagined a better OB experience having a great MD by my side. He is a very caring and gentle person and always listens to his patient. I will forever remember and appreciate the care I received from him. Great doctors like Dr. Riley are hard to find! read more

Dr. Riley is an outstanding person and doctor. Throughout my pregnancy Dr. Riley always treated my husband and I with kindness, he respected our autonomy and answered all our questions thoroughly. What I really loved about Dr. Riley is he always made me feel comfortable even post delivery when both my husband and I were worried about our LO, Dr. Riley always put me at ease. I'm so happy to have found Dr. Riley. He's thorough, caring, wise and has a good sense of humor. On my first appointment, before he saw me in the exam room, we first met in his private office. What a great concept! How often do you get to see your doctor in your clothes (in lieu of that ridiculous smock)? What a great setting to have a conversation with your Doctor. We must have sat in there for at least thirty minutes. While I didn't have that much to ask him, he offered up lots of information to make sure I was fully informed and kept on making sure I didn't have any more questions. I felt like he would have given me two hours if I needed it. It's a shame that some of the other medical offices make you feel so rushed, probably because they are overbooking appointments to maximize billing. Not Dr. Riley. read more

I love Dr. Riley !!! I have been a patient of his for 7 years. Although I live in Sacramento now I still have kept him as my doctor he is worth the travel. He makes me laugh and feel comfortable. Great Doctor! I don't know what the other review was referring to be so uncomfortable because I'm definitely not. I'm actually very comfortable and can trust Dr.Riley. He's always on top of things and make sure myself and the baby are doing going good and I couldn't ask for more. read more

Love the time Dr. Riley takes to actually get to know you. I have never felt an obgyn have so much care as much as he does. I feel like I can ask him anything and not worry if my question was "embarrassing. I have nothing but nice words to say about this Dr. Because I find him to be amazing. I travel over 30 miles to see this Dr and wouldn't change it at all. Thanks Dr. Riley for your listening ears. read more

Dr. Riley gave us the best experience ever. I was at first uncomfortable because I had ever had a male OBGYN but I'm so glad I got out of my comfort zone. He made me feel so confident and comfortable throughout the duration of my pregnancy. Whenever I felt I had something wrong he immediately saw me and took care of the problem quickly and efficiently. He's very straightforward yet sensitive and had a great sense of humor. I HIGHLY recommend dr. Riley and I plan on sticking with him in all my future pregnancies. I refuse to go anyone else. Try him out, you won't regret it :) read more

Dr. Riley was my surgeon 2 plus years ago. He was amazing throughout the entire process. Very kind and caring. I recommend Dr. Riley highly. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Riley's for several years now. I find Dr. Riley a very sweet man who cares deeply about his patient and really listens to what they say. Dr. Riley opens up the communication lines so that you feel free to tell him anything, even embarrassing problems. I read a past review where a new patient was offended by Dr. Riley's questions. When I first met Dr. Riley I thought his questions were very personal and I was shocked he asked them. Over time I realized why he is so blunt. He cares so deeply about the physical and emotional health of his patience that he asks these questions to make sure you are in a safe loving relationship. In my first Dr. visit, Dr. Riley figured out that I felt nervous about not getting pregnant as fast as I did with my first child. We addressed stress and ideas to improve my stress levels. He suggested I take 1 hour a day for my self to focus on my self a unwind. We wanted me to go take a walk and get some fresh air. I followed his suggestion and learned he was right. I actually got pregnant a couple of months later. read more

I found Dr Riley through other peoples reviews. I first saw him two years ago. He diagnosed my problem even though all the test came back neg. H was spot on. His office staff is polite and helpful. He is marvelous. Really caring and loves to talk. The first visit he actually takes you into his office and chats with you. Just to get to know you. The wait time is reasonable. Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Riley and his staff. read more

HORRIFYING EXPERIENCE. At first I thought Dr. Riley was just a funny quirky guy but when it came to the inappropriate questioning I was beyond uncomfortable. I was shocked to see such great reviews for Dr. Riley. I am new to the San Diego area and needed a new gyno. I came across Dr. Riley and saw good reviews on Yelp so I thought there would be no problem. WRONG. Never in my life has a gynecologist asked me if my boyfriend and I "make love" and "does it feel good" he then continued to ask me if I orgasm, does it feel good, how often do I orgasm. Just when I thought he was done he then says. "most girls think they know that sex feels good when they are 18, but really mid 20's is when i starts feeling really good." These were just the things he said in his office. When I went in for the actual pap smear and I described my symptoms of abdominal pains he replies, "well even though you don't feel good you look pretty, smart, healthy, and thin." WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH MY PAIN?! You are a doctor HELP ME..He also talked about another patients sexual history who was only 15. It had nothing to do with my concerns. Also, there wasn't a nurse in the room just the two of us. I have always had a nurse in the room. Dr. Riley also inserted an IUD in me so I could see how it felt. Just when I thought he was done he starts comparing my vagina to a 70 year old woman's and how the discharge is different and "things look different down there." Really? And asking what kind of lubricant I use? Is that really info you must know? The whole visit was horrifying and I was extremely upset with my experience. I'm sure this has happened to other women before and I'm hoping I will help someone reading this before they make an appointment. I went over a month ago and still haven't gotten a call with my results! I felt completely violated and disgusted with Dr. Riley. I only wish I spoke up when I was in there and I hope the next woman does. I plan to report this so no woman has to go through this. It's NOT okay! read more

I absolutely love Dr Riley. He is warm, caring, compassionate & attentive. His staff are efficient & pleasant. He always makes himself available to answer my questions or concerns. I've been a patient of Dr. Riley's for going-on 20 years. He was recommended highly by my primary physician, and I bless the day I found him. AS of now, I am post-menopausal, but when I was first having my yearly exams done by Dr. Riley, I was not. So, our conversations have changed over the years. I mean CONVERSATIONS. He always takes the time to chat, to make one feel at ease, to joke. I mean there I am in those stirrups, and we're cracking up about some political scenario. When I had symptoms that could have indicated I had ovarian cancer, he led me through the various tests very adeptly, kindly--no big deal. (Turned out I had bladder cancer so switched to his recommended urologist; had surgery and 7 years later am still cancer-free.) A year or so, I asked him for an estimate of how many babies he had delivered thus far in his career, and he replied, with no bravado, "Oh, about 10,000.And I am sure he has! Dr. Riley may not be the Mother Theresa of obstetrician-gynecologists (but maybe he is?), but he is one of the smartest, kindest, trustworthy physicians under whose care I have been. I mean, how many women can say they look forward to their annual pap smear and pelvic exam? May he never retire! read more

I just delivered my baby and last week and I am so happy that I chose the right doctor! Dr. Riley is the most professional and smartest OBs, and throughout the pregnancy, labor/delivery, he answered all of our questions and guided us through the whole process. He has a ton of experience and has handled all sort of situations, so I was assured that I was in the right hands. He knew what our concerns and priorities were, and took the time to get to know us really well. I felt confident in Dr. Riley's hands and I will definitely be going back for my next baby! He is the BEST. On top of this, the staff is professional and courteous as well, which is hard to find these days. read more

Dr. Riley is by far the best doctor I have ever had! Going into my pregnancy I was seeing a different group of doctors at another office. I wanted to have a natural birth, however this group was not supportive of that and made me feel like I didn't have many options or a decision in my own birth. I quickly realized that is not the experience I wanted to have and changed doctors. Dr. Riley's office accepted me mid way through my pregnancy and I am so thankful they did! My first visit with Dr. Riley was lovely. He sat with me for 45 minutes and got to know me and and addressed questions or concerns I had. Dr. Riley was always supportive of what I wanted and was always on board with anything I would add to my birth plan. When I went into labor Dr. Riley was the one to catch my baby, which is rare these days to have your doctor do so. However that is another reason Dr. Riley is so wonderful! I did encounter a slight issue with my labor, my son's cord was wrapped around his neck and his heart rate was dropping. Rather me get stressed or scared, I stayed calm knowing that Dr. Riley was there to help get him out safely. Dr. Riley was not only concerned and focused on my well being, but was fully focused on our little one and his needs. After he was born we were visited by Dr. Riley daily to see how we were doing. Such a nice addition to an already great experience. I wouldn't change a thing. I would highly recommend him to everyone wanting a supportive, awesome doctor. Thanks Dr. Riley, Mark, Mason and I thank you for all that you have done! read more

This is only a 5-star review because you cannot give 10 stars. My only concern about Dr. Riley is that he may one day retire and I don't have a plan! This is a doctor who treats you with the utmost compassion and spends a lot of time understanding your situation, recognizing that one size does not fit all. He gives you the information you need to make informed decisions. You can ask him whatever you want and not feel uncomfortable. His office does not cancel appointments so somehow he's mastered the art of keeping appointments even with babies being born whenever they decide to arrive; not all that common in my experience. If you call him, he calls you back - even if he's on vacation - and he keeps calling until he reaches you so that you don't just get a voice mail. read more

Dr. Riley has been my OB/GYN for the past 3 years. And all I can say is that I am so blessed to have found such a caring and concerned doc! I have had three babies and my first two OB providers (not him) were so nonchalant during my pregnancy. Every issue during my pregnancy wasn't an "issue" for them even if it was for me (Navy docs, go figure). When I met Dr Riley during an ER visit at Sharp Mary Birch with my third pregnancy he took the time to know me, my husband, and our concerns and really took over from there. I have permanently left Naval Medical Center in Balboa as a patient for my GYN issues because of the red carpet treatment I received not only from Dr Riley but from his office staff as well. Since delivering my little one I've had two GYN surgeries with him and, omg, everything from the consult, referral process, and even now post op I'm so thankful to have chosen to stay with Dr Riley. He has an "openness" to his ways of consult/educating his patients, so he will ask questions that some people may feel too embarrassed about having but I personally love it. I rather have a physician that I can trust and talk to like an open book than one that I'm embarrassed to disclose my concerns with. Thank you to Dr. Riley and everyone there at the office for being such an awesome team! I would recommend Dr. Riley blindly and whole heartedly to any woman seeking an OB/GYN! read more

Dr. Riley delivered all three of my children - they are now 29, 31 and 33...and I still see him once a year. Even when he didn't take the insurance I had for a few years I paid out of pocket because I can't imagine seeing anyone else. Fortunately my insurance now does because I wouldn't sign up for a policy that didn't. I can't imagine him getting anything but a stellar review - he's a wonderful doctor who actually spends as much time as you need talking and answering questions. I hope he never retires! read more

We were so happy to have Dr. Riley by our side throughout pregnancy. Let me start off by first saying that he delivers 90% of his own patients' babies--the only time he doesn't is when he's out of town or sick---this is UNHEARD of in today's medical OB field! I was first referred to him after some complications early on in my pregnancy. Dr. Riley spent 2 hours with my husband and I during our first visit, and was always very willing to answer any questions that came up in future visits. During a couple of visits with him, we didn't know what questions we should be asking, and he took time to educate us on what some of the most common concerns were at each stage in the pregnancy and what decisions we would need to consider for our future visits. Any time I had a test/lab done, he always called with the results as soon as he received them--I never had to call the office to request my results. Towards the end of my care with him, I decided to have a home birth, which Dr. Riley was very supportive of. The thing I most appreciated about Dr. Riley was his complete lack of judgment and his respect that the decisions surrounding the birthing process are in the hands of the family. He never forced his opinions or told us what we should be doing--he always gave us a very objective perspective and told us the pros/cons of both sides. He assisted us as we decided what our ideal birth looked like. He continued to follow me all the way up until labor, and for post-partum care. He was willing to work with my mid-wife for co-care, and was very reasonable and practical in his approach. He is a doctor with lots of experience and therefore doesn't practice defensive medicine. (meaning he doesn't force you into doing a whole bunch of unnecessary testing) I felt very safe in his hands, and even though I was hoping for a home birth, I felt so relaxed knowing that if I had to go to a hospital I would have Dr. Riley as my doctor. Regarding the people who didn't give him a good review due to his off note comments--I felt like he had a quirky personality when I first met him, but after 1 visit with him its clear that he genuinely cares about you and the baby. read more

Dr. Riley delivered all three of my babies and I am very grateful. He is very professional and takes the time to speak with you. I left his practice to try another OB/GYN for my third baby based on a referral. What a mistake! Dr. Riley accepted me at 32 weeks pregnant and delivered my third through repeat c-section. The surgery went as planned and I felt total comfortable during the entire process. Dr. Riley was punctual and enthusiastic the day of the surgery and made sure I was well prepared at home for the recovery. I was there just last week for my postpartum appointment. Everything looks great. I highly recommend Dr. Riley as your OB/GYN. read more
