Unlike Miami with its signature Deco, Fort Lauderdale has some, though very few, remains of its signature architecture which was Mid-Century Modern. Unfortunately most of what we had has been torn down, revamped into something unrecognizable or just plain destroyed. Hence we will never be able to have a Mid-Century Modern Drive that would in any way compete with Miami's Deco Drive.
One of the few remains of our Mid-Century Modern, though now hardly recognizable as such, is Times Square, a small shopping mall located on the southeast corner of Federal and Oakland Park Blvd. Designed by Charles McKirahan in 1954 the centerpiece is curved building facing north on Federal Highway. At one time it was one of the best every examples of Mid-Century and a true landmark with a second floor red brick screening wall. Unfortunately and in one fell act of outrageous stupidity it was intentionally destroyed, and as far as I know our Historic Preservation Board never got involved. Too late now, but with keen eyes for architecture one can still see remains of its beauty still stands as a matter of local flavor.
Presently the center structure of Times Square which once housed a Castro furnishing store appears run down and abandoned but Times Square is home to several other business other business including Times Square Pizza, Taco Bar, a clothing cleaner and alteration store, a hearing aid shop, Good Vibes Blow Out, being a hair salon, and Smarty Pants, a gay bar, just to name a few. read more
