So glad they made it through the pandemic. Took my son to see Empire Strikes Back. Awesome!

    The Times Cinema at night...

This is my neighborhood cinema. The movies change frequently enough and most always have something I want to see. Whether a new movie or a classic playing for a special season, I rarely pass by on Vliet without making note of what is showing or coming. The seats are large and comfortable. The ticket prices are modest. For $20, I can get in and have a glass of wine. It's old fashioned in feel, the ticket takers and concessions staff are helpful. I walk there but there is plenty of parking whether in their lot or on the street. The Times makes for a great night out!

I'd really love if Yelp allowed "1/2" stars, so consider this an unofficial 3.5'er! Lets get the nasty out of the way first: What don't I like? The parking. It was street only as far as I could tell, and all the streets there are one-way only, so it got filled up faster, which meant you were parking further and further down and had to walk further to get to the Times. So while I don't like it, I get it, little theater, can't really afford big parking, check. The seating. I'm so-so here, but I default to not liking. I sort of felt like I was sinking into my seat, and while I know others may enjoy that feeling, I constantly kept adjusting myself -- no, not THAT kind of adjusting, nasty. What I liked! The Times is one of those places that you can count on to host great community-based events, like Ex Fabula, and the more independent films - not always, but sometimes. I liked their varied seating, even though I didn't really like MY seat (they have a mixture of theater chairs and tables and such which are up closer to the stage... or was that an Ex Fabula thing only?) I'm really looking forward to keeping the Times on my radar for productions like Rocky Horror and other fun things that these smaller theaters tend to do. Oh yea, they serve adult beverages as well, and while I'm not sure on any restrictions they may have, such as no beer before 9 AM, there were plenty of people coming out with cocktails and beer when I was there at 7:30/9:30 PM. Your luck my vary. So, you know what, I was going to rate it a 3 and say it was a 3.5, but I'll rate it a 4 and say it's a 3.5. I think the Times deserves that much.

We happened to be driving down Vliet and stumbled across this theater that was playing some classic 90's flicks (Ghost and Pretty Woman).

While there my son and I got popcorn, a soda, and a bottle of water. Matinee pricing isn't bad compared to bigger chain theaters. My ticket was $10 and he was $8 since he counts for child prices. The popcorn was expensive at $9 for a medium-ish size bag (even with a free refill) compared to larger buckets at other theaters and we didn't care for the flavor of the "butter". The soda was $7, which was also pricey. Unfortunately they only offer one size for both the popcorn and soda and don't give you a discount for buying both as a combo. They have other food like pizza and chicken tenders on the menu board, but no prices were listed. I know people love the leather recliners at other theaters, but the loveseats at Rosebud Cinema are preferable as far as I'm concerned. We sunk into the plush loveseat and it was far more comfortable than a hard leather recliner. Each loveseat had a decent size pillow to lean on too. It's not the most conveniently located theater based on where I live, but the decent prices and comfortable seating will probably bring me back.

He purchased tickets well in advance. Staff was pleasant as they checked our tickets and took our concession order. Popcorn was yummy and who doesn't like a Coke Freestyle Machine? Our movie played in the "IMAX" which I think is just the largest screen available at the theater, it's definitely not an IMAX. I thought the picture was great, my husband felt it was a tad blurry. Sound was loud and enjoyable compared to home viewing. My rating falls due to the outdatedness of the theater itself. In the bathroom there were sinks and papertowel/soap dispensers not operational. The seats are "old school" as my husband put it... Plan to be sitting upright for however long your movie plus the pre movie ads/trailers go on. I guess I'm privileged in that I am now use to "dream lounger" seats and ample walkway space in each aisle. We sat in the middle section of the row, and lets just say if you have to get up to pee, every person will need to get up to accommodate. The floor was sticky. My husbands seat cushion was "broken" so he was particularly uncomfortable. Overall, AMC, please update this theater! It could use some TLC and I think with that, the location would have a resurgence of popularity as it is the only AMC in the area.

The theater itself, though, could really use some updates -- it feels a bit bare bones with little decoration or ambiance, especially compared to other nearby theaters. As for the movie, we expected a fun cartoon spin on Frankenstein, but it ended up being pretty slow and not very engaging for older kids or adults. Still, it was a free event and a nice family night out, so we made the most of it.
