The cheese is an entire experience. It is creamy and just acidic enough. I was worried my family of 4 wouldn't be able to work through the wheel, but it turns out to be the most amazing grilled cheese-making cheese you could ever imagine and had my kids begging for more! We made a special trip to Crozet while in D.C. for this cheese (and maybe some wine!). Please visit if you are in the area!

The 2 lb. cheese wheel comes in a red wax coated protective seal that keeps this semi-soft cheese delicious and mild. We purchased two wheels of cheese at $32 each. They also ship for a slightly higher charge. But it's definitely worth taking a trip to see the monastery grounds and visit the sweet nuns. The cheese shop is open daily (except Sunday) between 2-4 pm, but hours may vary so check their website for times. The cheese here is made from grass-fed cow's milk which gives this cheese its incredible velvety texture. The cheese curds are shipped in from Wisconsin, the cheese capital of the states! The Dutch recipe is a well kept secret and makes this cheese unique and flavorful! It's so Gouda, you may develop a "habit" for it! It's truly heaven sent!

The menu reads well, Appalachian cuisine with options for venison tenderloin, boar sausage, duck breast, and rabbit amongst your usual chicken and shrimp. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer, the venison tenderloin, and the duck. The breading on the tomatoes was so thick it took a knife to cut. The venison (a $50 entree) was ordered medium and came to the table grey and beyond well done. The skin of the duck was inedible as it wasn't seared. The service, too, was lacking. At this price point we expected more attentive, higher-end service. After clearing the appetizer, for example, our server left the side plates saying we could use them in case we wanted to share our entrees, but there remained half-eaten breading and inedible cores form the tomatoes on them, so we would've hoped for clean plates. Neither entree was served with a steak knife and when one of us asked for one, we hoped they would bring one for each of us, but they didn't. Finally, the second round of drinks were made in the same glasses as the first as evidenced by the shrinking ice cube and double cherries. It's the little things; we will not be back and cannot recommend this establishment to anyone else. All we can do is make others aware and hopefully take the overall rating down a peg with this honest review.
