Jed Johnson answered my request for a proposal promptly, met with me at the project site soon after we connected, and sent me a cost proposal when he said I could expect it. While reviewing my project on site, he offered great advice regarding colors, types of paint for various applications, etc. After contracting with Ashlar Painting, Jed kept me informed every step of the way throughout the project and never missed a completion date on the schedule. The workmanship was top notch. Such high praise for a contractor does not come readily from me. Over a 35 year career as an architect and facilities manager, I have dealt with an incredible number of contractors for both small projects (like mine) and for multi-million dollar projects. I've seen (and been in contracts with) the best and the worst of the construction and building trades industry. The prep work that was done was exceptional. Jed Johnson is also experienced in construction, as well as working with design builders. His understanding of how a home is constructed makes for a higher caliber of painting professional. Jed was able to help preserve the exterior wood trim, and added additional weatherproofing to our shutters and gables. Home has been caulked to the Nth degree. Most downspouts and all the shutters were removed in order to paint the underlying wood trim. Then as the shutters and downspouts were replaced, the screw holes were caulked for further waterproofing. The wood trim was back brushed, which makes for a smoother and thicker coating of paint, which also will last much longer than sprayed on. Jed and his crew went the extra mile on everything. Jed found several areas where leaks could potentially cause problems and made repairs. For the first time in the history of our home- it is now watertight. The crew was very professional, courteous and hardworking. The guys worked just as hard and consistently even when Jed was not on-site. The estimate for our home was much more reasonable than the bids I had gotten from other contractors. Painting was completed in a timely fashion, when the weather permitted. In December 2022, I researched local options for interior painting companies. I did a deep dive…read moreinto reviews of 3 top-rated companies, and decided to call A BURST OF COLOR after reading hundreds of reviews looking for negatives and I couldn't find even one (of substance) I called and scheduled a meeting with company owner, Travis Pengally. He arrived on time and prepared. He listened intently to my must-have list and informed me of his proprietary painting process. I was very impressed and asked him for a bid. The bid arrived in a timely fashion as was very descriptive with no mistakes. The total amount was actually less than I had anticipated for such a large job - paint my kitchen cabinets (using the process explained on the website) and all walls throughout the first and second floors (around 1900 square feet). I really like my kitchen layout and Travis verified that my cabinet boxes and door and drawer fronts were very high quality (solid cherry). I originally thought a color combo of white for uppers and a darker grey for the base cabinets island and pantry would be nice. But I was thrilled to learn I would be receiving 3 hours of color consultation with a color specialist who would set up times to come to my home. The consultant (Dee) arrived as promised and over the course of 2 visits (to gauge how the light was cast about the home) at different times of the day. She listened to my color preferences, but I decided to go with her recommendations across the board (much different than what I had in mind) because she is an EXPERT! She chose several different sample colors for the walls and Travis came shortly after to paint samples in the different rooms throughout the house. She came back a third time, and she and I reviewed the samples he had painted on the walls and agreed which colors worked best. Luckily, I had planned to go to Las Vegas for 3 weeks in February, and this allowed Travis and his team to complete all the painting without inconveniencing me. He provided regular updates and I as very excited to see the finished product, especially the kitchen and the color combination was "Stanley Park" (a light green) for upper cabinets and "Topsoil" (a dark earthy green) for the island, pantry and coffee station. On my way back from Vegas, I called Travis and he indicated he wanted to meet me (7:00 pm at night!) to see my reaction to the "big reveal"! I arrived, opened the door and my home had been COMPLETELY TRANSFORMED into a peaceful oasis of calm taupe-ee, creamy soothing grey color (Pashmina) on the walls and a darker grey (?) for accent features like the fireplace walls. The kitchen was TRANSORMED from dark and dreary "merlot" colored cabinets to sleek, light, airy and modern!!! (see link to video to judge for yourself!) I was also expecting to find dust and items out of place, but that was not the case; my house was also spotlessly clean and completely restored (including re-hanging pictures and mirrors and placement of furniture!). I was blown away. We celebrated with a glass of wine and I thanked Travis (and his team) profusely. After Travis left and I set about the house to find "flaws" so he could come back and do touch ups, but I was NOT ABLE TO FIND A SINGLE FLAW! I also noticed there were no brush strokes visible (all surfaces had been spray painted!), not on the walls or kitchen cabinets which appeared new and "factory fresh". The word "meticulous" does not do justice to the attention to detail this company delivers. If you have read to this point, I think it best to sum up by saying you are CRAZY if you do not give A BURST OF COLOR a call to evaluate your painting needs.
