Cute rural cafe with the tastiest Ukrainian food. It's a cafe set up in a cute gift shop. What I…read moreappreciate is the quality of the food. The borscht was a 4/5 (a bit too chunky for my liking) but the Ukrainian late was perfection. The perogies are stuffed full and a very good size. The cabbage rolls are proper sour cabbage rolls (not the German type that often gets served as Ukrainian). Served with local kolbasa sausage and coleslaw. Also a generous portion of onions and bacon. Definitely worth the drive from Edmonton.

As you would expect the people here know how to cook Ukrainian meals as if they've done it their whole lives because they probably have. It's also incredibly busy here for a Friday at almost 1:00 pm. Most Edmonton cafés would love to be this busy. I ordered the soup and sandwich combo and chose egg salad on brown bread and a "small" bowl of borscht. The sandwich was average but the borscht was excellent. My wife ordered the clubhouse sandwich and I tasted it too. The clubhouse had very crispy bacon just like it should be. It was very good. I had coffee and it came with lots of refills. My cup didn't hit empty until I wanted it to. There was a nice selection of pies, and the sign said Friday is pie day. I tasted her cherry pie. It was quite good, even better than average. This café makes a wonderful stop for lunch if you are in the area. It's easy to find and right across the street from Strawnichy Sausage place.

Lots of TV's tuned with sound on to watch a game! (No loud annoying music). Had great service! Wednesday was Wing night, but decided to go with the "Red Wine Boneless Beef Brisket ". No reason! Sounded good! Lol! The best meal I have eaten out in the last 9 months! WOW! Amazing flavour, with real mashed potatoes, tasty gravy and roasted mixed fresh vegetables "a medley of mixed carrots & baby bok choy" - super tasty! (cooked just right!). I travel lots! and eat everywhere in Alberta/Sk. The meal was to die for! Flavour with good portion and fair price. Looking to my next trip to St. Paul. Highly recommend stopping by the Hideaway, just behind Smitty's on West-side of town on the main drag!

I have been visiting Smitty's Restaurant & Lounge in St. Paul, Alberta for a little over a year. My…read moreoriginal review was 3 stars because the food was just okay, but I am now lowering my rating--not because of the food, but because of the cleanliness and management's response to customer concerns. In the past year, I have had to complain about dirty cutlery and bright green flecks floating in my tea. It doesn't happen every time, but often enough--about once every four visits--to raise serious concerns. Most recently, I found more green flecks in my tea. I politely asked to speak to the owner, not to cause a scene or ask for compensation, but simply to understand why this keeps happening and what was being done to fix it. Instead, only a supervisor came by. No one else followed up, and when the bill arrived, the tea (which I had not touched) was still charged. There was no apology, no explanation, and no acknowledgment from the owner. The fact that the owner would not take even one minute to address a regular customer's concern--and chose to leave both teas on the bill--tells me that customer care and cleanliness are not priorities here. Because of this negligence, Smitty's has lost my patronage. I hope this review serves as a warning to others and a reminder to management that basic cleanliness and respect for customers should never be optional in a restaurant. To be clear, this review is not a reflection on the wonderful staff--Fanny, Pauline, Carly, and Amanda--who have always provided friendly and attentive service. This is strictly a reflection of the lack of leadership and accountability at the management level.
