We had family coming in from other parts of UP today so we met at timber Charlie's for lunch. There were four adults and two children. There was not a wait when we arrived so we proceeded immediately and they brought a highchair for our 13 month old. Drinks were provided very efficiently, as well as a cheese curds appetizer that was ordered to arrive very quickly. We had multiple dishes, including a Gyro- which my brother said was amazing, a barbecue sandwich, which was also very good but very messy, as it was cold and rainy I had a bowl of vegetable beef soup, which was very tasty and a side of coleslaw All the food was very tasty, and delivered quickly, but once we were all finished, it was a good long while before everything was cleared and we could pay our bill and go, and there was quite a line out the door waiting on tables It just feels like we need more wait staff to keep up with the demand here- so just be prepared. My son didn't eat (as usual), but my daughter loved the chicken tenders! They were actually seasoned, and I tried them myself. Pretty good! I got the cheeseburger, which comes loaded with toppings. For just $2, you can add bacon and I definitely did! Just be sure to let them know if there's anything you don't want on it. My husband ordered the Paul Bunyan sandwich and really enjoyed it. He forgot to ask for no mayo...totally his fault but he still loved it! My brother and I were just North of Newberry at Duffys Motel. (Highly recommend). Timber Charlie's was recommended by the flier in our room. Greeted by the hostess, immediately and told our waitress would be right with us. 25 minutes later we left after being ignored by everyone. Tables that came in after us were waited on. Nobody stopped by our table after we were seated. It appeared that everybody was hiding when left. I looked for someone to express my displeasure to when we left. Go to the light North of Newberry and turn left. You will find the Wolf Inn or The Pine Stump within 14 miles. Duffy's Motel is on the corner by the Light. Co Rd 407. My boyfriend and I absolutely love this place! We sat at the bar and chatted with Rob who is such a nice and genuine guy! We both recommend anything from the meat part of the menu, I had the pulled pork burger and my boyfriend had the BBQ ribs. They were delicious and it is all smoked in house! The cheese curds are also a must have as well as a salad with ranch because they make their own ranch! We went on a Wednesday night and waited 10 minutes to be seated at 7:45pm. Staff is super friendly. I had the 1/2 back of baby back ribs. They were tender and the sauce is sweet. I had steamed veggies and a cup of vegetable beef soup for my sides. My friend had chicken breast on top of mixed salad greens. It came with sliced tomatoes, onion and croutons. This place is so fantastic we went twice during our 3 day trip. The first day I let my husband be the pastie guinea pig and I got the white fish dinner, today we went back and I got the pastie and my husband got the white fish dinner.... I'm incredibly fussy about a pastie and this place doesn't disappoint..... they actually know what a salt and pepper shaker is. So if you like a heavily seasoned pastie this is the place for you!! Nice menu with above average pub food choices, friendly staff handling everything with efficiency in a packed house. We had the whitefish basket and the chicken tenders basket. One of us is a French onion soup snob and Timber Charlie's was good with one exception: the cheese was a white cheese slice instead of the thick chewy Gruyère or Swiss. We ate here twice while in Newberry, service and food were very good. Thursday night we arrived later (party of 5) and were seated right away. Everyone liked their food and the beer was cold. Friday night we came back for fish fry (party of 10), after waiting quite awhile with no end in sight to the wait-the bar opened up so we took every chair at the bar. Not sure when we would have been seated otherwise, the restaurant really doesn't have the ability to seat 10 people and they just kept seating everyone who came in after us, so not sure what their plan was. Doesn't matter, because the bartender took terrific care of us and we had an amazing time! A few of us got the all you can eat Whitefish, the rest got Perch dinners, kids got a variety of burgers, Mac and cheese, etc. all food was hot and very good! It was crowded and a wait to get seated. We decided to get our meal to go and it came quickly. While we were waiting we could see what the "problem" was. There are only a few employees and so much demand. But the atmosphere was cozy and the staff really nice. After getting back to the hotel we discovered out food was delicious!! We had the perch and whitefish platter and a mushroom Swiss burger- all cooked perfectly! We totally recommend Timber Charlie's. Cant wait to visit again on our next trip. read more

So, COVID has Timber Charlies short staffed and I don't think these one- and two-star reviews should be taken into account. How can you rate a restaurant poorly if they're short staffed because of a pandemic? They were so short staffed on my visit that I couldn't even get a pasty. Guess what? I got over it. Anyway, this is a pretty good spot even though it's one of the only places in town. I'm sure it's cooler to sit inside when there isn't a pandemic, but get take out and enjoy your life the same. When the waitress asked I explained why and was told 'it was grilled.' Oh, ok. Please tell that to my 8 year old. How hard would it be to say 'I'm sorry.' and take it off the bill? The fried cheese curds weren't cheese curds either - they tasted like cheese whiz and were not the same consistency as Wisconsin fried cheese curds or any other cheese curd I've eaten.
