Just happened to be passing through and happened to stop at this little gem. Food was delicious - love a crispy chimichanga! Refried beans were excellent as was the service. Chips and some tasty salsa (nice kick without being too weak or too overwhelming) on our table within minutes of arrival. If we ever are in the area again we will definitely come again. THE BOMB! Food always comes out fast, and it always slaps. Once my dog ate my José's leftovers and I best the f*ck out of him. The go to eat-chips-and-salsa-and-talk-shit-with-the-homies spot. Great service, I enjoy the fun, infectious (in a good way!!!) atmosphere. Great Margs! I recommend the frozen/slushy margs, strawberry is the best I.M.O, but the rest are great too! Portions were big. The cheese queso chorizo dip was really good. Chips and salsa was good. I asked for Spivey salsa and they brought out this tomatillos salsa that tasted like arss. Don't get that. Server was ok. She had a lot of tables and ignored us a couple times because she was fixated on other tables. Lots of refills in the Mexican food business. Would return. We just didn't have the best experience. My dinner (seafood poblano peppers) was too greasy to eat. Our waiter didn't check back with us but even if he had I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have cared. Jose's food is 4 or 5 stars and the prices are reasonable, but it isn't the Mexican food most folks are familiar with and service and decor could use some work. The food is very good, but pretty basic for the most part - closer to authentic Mexican food. The chips and salsa were very good and quickly refilled. Do NOT ask for the mild salsa; it wasn't good and I wouldn't even call it salsa, almost a marinara sauce. The regular salsa was outstanding. The nachos was cheese and meat on chips, not what I or anyone else expected. The burritos and the Acapulco cheese steak (a burrito) were great; rice and beans are rice and beans. Our server was nice and friendly, but not great. A request for a glass to drink beee from wasn't delivered until after the bottle was almost consumed. A chicken burrito was a beef burrito when it got to the table. And the server never came back to check on us, though he was very responsive when we signaled to him. The check was dropped off at the table, but we were left to figure out that you pay on the way out. Parking is plentiful and the building is in good shape, but it's an old Studebaker's restaurant you can tell if you look around - not a lot has been done to make it into Jose's. Good food, cold beer and friendly staff deserve a visit, but be prepared. read more

The first time we came in here, we had a pretty good experience! The place had decent enough parking, three sides to the restaurant, and coming during lunch allowed us quicker service. We tried a few of the drinks, like the strawberry margarita and I can say I was a bit more intoxicated than I intended to get (I later learned they gave me the largest size instead of asking what size I wanted of the 3 offered). We have tried the burrito grande I believe it's called, the tamale, the steak taco, and the pork taco. The tacos are good, I'm pretty impressed with the meat quality but I wish they would use two tortillas for the tacos as they rip quickly from the juicy meat chunks. The pork was lacking in flavor, but was very tender and the steak was enjoyable as well. The tamale was mostly masa but enjoyed with some salsa on top to help with the mild dryness. The boyfriend seems to enjoy his burrito but says it's "all meat and nothing else" for whatever that's worth. The rice and beans are good, I feel that it's decent value for the food pricing but the drinks are kind of expensive. The place is not overly decorated but it is spacious which is beneficial. The second time we came here, the service was not great. It didn't take long to get seated, but the staff was either overwhelmed or they were understaffed. After about ten minutes she came buy to do drinks, then eventually circled back and asked if she had taken our order already. When our food came out, they had given me hard shell tacos with lettuce and cheese when I asked for soft corn Mexican style. After five more minutes, I got the right tacos and I asked the food runner for hot sauce. Ten minutes pass, no hot sauce. So I got up and found a server stand that had Cholula and that was good enough to continue eating. It took awhile to get the check, then we proceeded to cash out up front as she said she was too busy to cash us out. Not a huge deal, but not great to hear at the end of the visit with the service we had. Overall, the food is good enough that it's worth checking out, but the service is questionable. I'd advise to never go during peak periods and you'll be fine, that seems to be the key. read more

We tried this place based on our hotel clerks recommendation. We were not disappointed. We were seated promptly and brought chips and salsa. The chips were a little thicker than we are used to, but were good! The salsa was also very good, and obviously made in house! We had fajita, both chicken and beef, and a carne asada taco plate. All were well seasoned and very tasty. My only criticism is that three tortillas is not enough for the huge portion of meat served with the fajita! Our server brought us more upon request.. The worst Mexican food I've ever had. The wait time was insane. I ordered a quesadilla for my daughter and it came with unseasoned grilled chicken and queso... Pleasantly surprised. I have lived in the southwest for 28 years and have eaten in dozens of Mexican restaurants in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Everything from big chains to tiny, 100 yr old, mom and pop restaurants. This may be the best Mexican food I've eaten. Certainly in the top 3.The menu is extremely extensive. There is something for everyone. Because it was our first time I had the Special Combo so I could sample a bit of everything. It consisted of a beef enchiladas, a beef burrito, a chile relleno, a taco, a tostada, and rice and beans. The enchilada sauce tasted more like a mole and was excellent, as was the red sauce on the burrito. The same with the cheese sauce on the chile relleno. I guess that's the bottom line. Excellent authentic Mexican in Sault Michigan. I am not sure how the Mexican owners found their way so far north but I am glad the did! I have had their enchiladas and their chilli Rellenos and both were excellent. They were very accommodating and letting me customize my order by ordering à la cart. Don't mistake this for the other Mexican Restaurants with Jose in the name! We decided to try Jose's after some deliberation. We originate not far from the Ambassador Bridge where we frequent some pretty amazing Mexican Restaurants ! Let me tell you Jose's was AMAZING!!!! The Choriquueso, a white cheese with chorizo dip was generous and tasty. As a gluten free option my partner in crime used chips and corn soft shells. It comes with Flour tortillas. I enjoy Pork and WOW did Jose's offer a great moist and tasty shredded pork! You can tell it is cooked in-house!!! I had the pork burrito, you can order one or two , topped with white queso sauce and enchilada sauce. So very yummy. I even enjoyed the rice! I also added some left over cheese dip to my rice. Sooo good! My partner ordered the chicken fajitas. His was a generous portion , all cut up in nice sized pieces ready to wrap in corn shells due to his gluten free dietary choice. He did enjoy his refried beans and guacamole. From the chips and great salsa to the dip and our meals, no complaints. We will be back the next time we drive up to the UP!! New restaurant in Sault Ste. Marie. Jose's occupies the site of the old Studebaker's restaurant. They are still working out some bugs. The service was average, and our food took longer than expected to arrive. I ordered Huevos Con Chorizo, which came as over hard eggs with chorizo sprinkled on top. It was good, but I had never seen it prepared that way. The server didn't know how to pronounce it, which I thought was kind of funny. The rest of the people in our party thought their food was decent. I worry that the general population of the area will miss out in some of the more authentic dishes, because they would be scared away by the names. Several people seated around us got nachos and quesadillas. Not the best Mexican, but definitely good for the Upper Penninsula of Michigan.
