He went to Canisius. He went to Woodstock, case of beer in hand. He had a law degree (with honors). He was on the Board of Directors for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was named to one of Time Magazines "100 most influential people" list one year. At the time of his unexpected death (at 58) he was the longest moderator of "Meet the Press, NBCs Sunday morning show. He often closed the show by saying "Go Bills". His son is also a Bills fan. While he was alive, Russert worked with the South Buffalo Alive organization to create a children's space, conveniently next to a public library. This space is a place for children to paly, and adults to come and sit quietly on the benches. There are some gardens and nice wildflowers as well. It's a smaller space, right on the street, but there is parking and its well maintained. This is all in the neighborhood Russert was born and raised in. If you are in the area for the Botanical Garden, the Basilica, or perhaps Valle of Mexico, come by here, its close, and check it out.

So you can pick up all kinds of crazy things that you wouldn't find at a regular Yard Sale elsewhere in the country. Here in Buffalo, though, we have a beautiful waterfront park along the Niagara River, with grilling and soccer and a dog park and lots of gorgeous views and sunsets. If you squint, you can see the Maple Syrup across the water glinting in the Canadian sunlight. I play soccer here... but not too often because it is the worst field I've ever played on. However other than soccer, I come here because it's one of my fave spots anywhere in the city. You can see the towering shapes of Statler and City Hall across the thundering 190 highway and train track at one end of the park. You have the Barkyard and all kinds of interesting buildings at the other end. And then you have the beautiful waterfront and the pathway along it. Not always the cleanest, not always the safest area at night, but during the day, in the summer, it's stunning. I was here just 3 weeks ago for a soccer game actually. I'm not supposed to be playing, but my goodness, what fantastic views from here on a blue sky day. It's one of the best natural settings for a park in Buffalo. The park isn't always the cleanest, the soccer field is the worst in the region (possibly the country), and the driveways are full of enormous treacherous potholes, but just because of the location and the beautiful views, I have to give it a 5.

Named after Father Conway, who was a WWII chaplain. Father Conway was not a Buffalo native, but he did have his parish here. He attended Niagara University and was ordained in 1934 to the priesthood for the Diocese of Buffalo. He worked in many of the local area churches, including St Rose of Lima and St Brigid. His hobby was sailing Lake Erie in a small sailboat. He was very much appreciated by the blue collar parishioners he tended to. He enlisted in 1942, and eventually found himself on the USS Indianapolis, which was torpedoed. While he survived for three days tending to the other sailors in the water with him, he was one of those lost. About 300 survived and they all told tales about Father Conway going from man to man to preach and encourage him as they treaded water waiting for rescue. Upon the news of his death, locals in Buffalo wanted to do something to remember him. Initially the park was not as well kept up as it is now, but under Mayor Masiello the park got signage and fencing and became a real neighborhood park, which is used by many today. Nice place to have a picnic with the breezes off the water.

There are two softball diamonds and whenever there is a rain storm, you can guarantee the games are going to be cancelled because the field don't hold water well at all. The grass is overgrown and the woodsy areas could be much more well kept. Parking at field two is difficult. You either have to ride over the grass or park in the lot behind the field and trek through the tall grass and weeds and cross your fingers that you don't get poison ivy. There also aren't any porta-potties nearby which makes for a difficult situation in the 5th inning after you've consumed three beers and a 16 oz water bottle. What? It's a beer league. Anyways, in addition to having no porta-potties around, there really isn't anything around here. There is one gas station attached to a convenience store that is in rough shape. They have a bathroom, but regardless of whether or not you buy something from the store, they won't let you use it. I have to give Conway Park three stars however, because we have way too much fun when we play at these fields.

It's always playing beautiful songs like America the Beautiful! And well lit! It has the largest flag of our country in NY state. Coming back today, it needs a few updates. Some of the signage is damaged or completely gone. An inappropriate sticker is in the slapped on the Golden Gate Bridge display (why can't people respect other people's property?). Someone's baby doll was left on another display that you are not supposed to be climbing on. It's still an amazing and beautiful place, but could use some updates so it doesn't fall apart completely. As I walk around, I feel gratitude for those who have protected our freedom. I hope one day we get back to remembering "United we stand, divided we fall"

Oh, the park is right in front of the family restaurant. How convenient. Here are some details. The music they play constantly is way too loud. It gave me a headache. The music doesn't need to be that loud. The "displays" are incredibly cheesy. Sort of cartoonish. If you actually want to honor our service men and women, you should put a little more effort when creating these displays. It's also close to a very busy roadway. Be careful when entering and exiting the parking lot area.

Because I'm a big fan, in fact this is where I played some of the biggest soccer games of my amateur grown-up life once I moved to Buffalo. Under the floodlights late in the evening, playing for the Eagles, we had some great moments here. Through balls, defensive blocks, epic crosses, and a very famous last minute goal by JG (hey if you're reading, that was an awesome strike!), and those memories will last forever. I actually felt like an American on those nights. Like I'd never been born and raised in a pessimistic negative rough and harsh society like I was. As if I'd been one of the dreamers, the Hollywood kids, the baseball kids, the cotton candy Kool Aid kids, and yes I must have been drinking the Kool Aid before writing this. Suffice to say, I always loved this field, and I always will.
