Petites Gamines is a really cute bakery on popular Laval St in Gatineau. My husband and I walked…read morethere (from Westboro) as part of our "Adventures in Gatineau" (lol, we rarely venture into Gatineau even though we live right across the bridge in Ottawa, so it's a joke between us that it's an adventure when we go to Gatineau). Anyway, we got a couple of baked goods and overall they were very good. We got an Oreo Brownie ($3.95) and a small Churros donut ($2.95). The brownie was really dense and rich and very chocolatey. It was a bit dry for my tastes, but still enjoyable and it had a potent chocolate flavour. I love strong flavours, so I was a fan. The Churros donut was tiny, but tasty. It had a dollop of dulce de leche in the hole and the texture was cronut-like. It was just really small, and y'all know I'm all about the size, haha. Service was friendly and welcoming. I had a nice chat with the staff member and she told me the owner of the bakery will be opening a Mexican restaurant down the street called Rosalita's. It's scheduled to open summer of 2023. I'll be keeping my eye out for it ;) She also told me all baked goods are made in house. They also sell coffee and teas and Tuesdays through Thursdays they also sell burritos. They have seating inside and a few tables and chairs outside out front as well. Super cute place! I did see any parking lot, so I assume street parking only.

This outlet has a larger in-dining space compared to the one at Rideau, where they only have a few tables against the wall, along the center's walkway. The service at the counter has been polite and gracious. Although the staff may have little knowledge on the daily special salads ingredients, she apologized for her inability to give information. The cafe is generally cleaned and spacious. Empty seats and lesser crowds were seen at the outlet in mid-afternoon around 3pm on a Saturday. I could easily find my seat and make way to the cashier to order my food. There is a wider range of light snacks like scones, sandwiches, salads, soups, limited pasta (only 1). Breakfast range from platters like Bagel, muffin, croissant/Danish or continental, granola yogurt parfait and even fruit tray. Lunch/ Dinner includes wraps: Cajun chicken Caesar, smoked turkey, Black Forest ham, roast beef etc. sandwiches range from Mediterranean chicken, roast beef with caramelized onions, turkey with grilled mushrooms. Salads lover will get a selection from egg, chicken, albacore tuna or even garden veggies alone. They offer desserts like baked cookies for chocolate chips, lemon poppy or banana loaf slices. They even offer squares platter and croissant platter. I went for a quick tea break. I had with me a small cappuccino which is quite potent in caffeine and smooth in the texture, not acidic even after a while. The cranberry orange cookie $1.25 was a good snack. Mildly sweet and buttery, the disc measures 2/3 of my palm size and was very soft and chewy, I enjoyed the cookie much as it was studded with quite a handful of dried cranberry fruits and candied orange peels and rimmed up with desiccated coconut. Lovely treats on a lazy weekend afternoon!

I occasionally search Google Maps for new businesses in and around Ottawa, and Modern General Food…read moreGroup came up when I searched for "bakeries in Kanata." My parents and I were going to Kanata and I wanted to make the most of the trip by scoping out a new place. Modern General Food Group, in addition to being a mouthful and IMO an unusual name for a bakery, is very unassuming. It's in a strip mall next to a Circle K and unless one is specifically looking for it, one would likely drive right by it and not even realize its existence. The space is cute and looks a bit like a general store inside. They sell miscellaneous shelf stable food items, in addition to baked goods. I popped in with my mom, while my dad waited in the car. We got a croissant ($4), cinnamon swirl ($4), butter tart (don't remember the exact price, was between $3 and $4) and a lemon square (was a bit over $4). The total after taxes was $17.05. The lemon square had a nice tart flavour. The cinnamon swirl was fluffy and more cake than bun/roll. I'd say closer to a coffee cake. The butter tart was tasty. The shape is not the conventional butter tart shape, it doesn't have crust on the top, which I actually prefer because I don't like too much crust, lol. I didn't have any of the croissant. Service was friendly. Everything was placed in a box and then sealed with a sticker. I saw signage indicating they hold cooking classes there. They are also going to be installing a fridge to sell refrigerated foods/drinks. There's free parking in the strip mall.

My husband and I stopped by to grab some pastries and overall they were good, but some items I found a bit pricey. I got a croissant ($2.50) and my husband got a chocolate eclair ($5). The croissant was good. It was crispy on the outside and flaky. It was large and I feel reasonably priced. The eclair was also good, but very small in my opinion and I feel it was expensive for what it was. It wasn't too sweet, which I appreciated. The pastry was a bit denser than I'm used to, but it was still good. They had some day-old pastries for 30% off, maybe I should have tried one of those, lol. I did want to try fresh items for a proper review though ;) The man serving us was very welcoming and courteous. He advised us that new products would be coming and they were making Galette des Rois for Christmas (our visit was a few weeks before Christmas). He also let us know that since they are closed on Tuesdays, on Mondays after 4pm all their pastries are 30% off. They had a flan cake there that looked amazing. I might need to pick up a slice ($5 for a good sized piece). On a subsequent visit I tried the Brioche topped with pearl sugar ($4), it was too dense for my liking and on the dry side, in my opinion. I also got a slice of their Raspberry Yule log ($6.50) which was fantastic, but the slice was a little thin. The raspberry mousse was airy, light and full of raspberry flavour and was my favourite part of the cake. They were out of the flan cake, unfortunately. There's some seating inside and they also sell coffee and tea. Street parking only.

What I love about inside is the low key quirkiness, from old hair salon chairs to snow shoe art, I usually spot something I've never noticed before. They do also have a small light lunch type of menu, and anything I've ordered from that has been tasty. Staff are top notch - well versed on the product, always genuine, and efficient. It's a little gem hidden away in the neighborhood. In summer, parking can be a challenge, and the ice cream line looks daunting.
