Boldly opening up in the late fall/beginning of Canadian winter, Ol' School Donuts is a bus that's…read morebeen painted fire engine red and converted into a mobile donut dispensary. While they sadly tend to spend the bulk of their time outside of the peninsula, that has changed at least a little bit lately. It seemed to be donut destiny when they were not only in Halifax, but also parked up the street from my office and there in the evening when I'd be off at 7. I rushed home to get my girlfriend and parked near the lot behind Atlantic News where they were set up. It was encouraging to see a few people there, even though the spot's not as on the beaten path as others. Two menu boards with borders to match the bus displayed several delicious sounding options - peanut butter cup, maple bacon, strawberry shortcake, chocolate Skor, caramel pecan crunch and Boston cream being the options that day. As Boston cream is my favourite donut at a certain ubiquitous Canadian chain that par cooks their products at central bakeries before sending them to stores, I had to go for the real deal. As this is also my paramour's fave, she went with the maple bacon to give us more donut diversity. They were ready within a couple minutes, and soon we were on our way back to the car to stuff our gobs. I didn't know exactly what I was getting into, expecting a cream-filled, fist-sized donut, but what we got were baskets of 10ish mini-donuts, covered in their respective toppings. They were, however, fantastic. Fresh out of the super cool donut making contraption that they have, they're just slightly crisp on the outside and airy, but still pleasantly dense on the inside. These have most certainly not been par cooked and sitting out in the open all day. The Boston cream drizzle reminds me of the Toaster Strudel icing, but only richer and less cloying. The chocolate sauce is, well, chocolate sauce. No wheels being reinvented, but it's tasty. The maple bacon donuts are great as well, with the same little loops of fried dough wonder with a maple icing drizzle and bits of thick cut bacon on top. No bacon-flavoured soy bits here. Each basket will set you back a fiver, but think of these as the restaurant quality dessert that they are, and you'll forget both the price and whoever that Tim Horton guy is anyway.

This is the best thing about returning to Nova Scotia. $5 for 10 donuts with two flavour choices…read moreper order. I like the Boston cream and lemon raspberry, personally, but there's something for everybody. The donuts are fresh fried, soft pillows of dough with the slightest crisp around the edges. The toppings are sweet and decadent. I couldn't recommend any higher. Also, they are in Enfield on Thursday nights for the season.

My new favorite weekend activity is a visit to the Alderney Landing Farmer's Market for a sampling of fresh baked goods and treats. New this year to the Farmer's Market is The Doughnut Stand. Serving up a wide variety of classic and new fusion style doughnuts, The Doughnut Stand offers a delicious, fresh, and local alternative to big chain factory baked goods. They have all the classics from Boston crème, raspberry filled, apple fritter, lemon curd, and maple bacon. The Doughnut Stand also brings an exciting and changing selection of new fusion style doughnuts. So far I've seen Crème egg and mini egg doughnuts for Easter, peanut butter Captain Crunch, carrot cake doughnut, Jalapeño bacon cheddar, and chocolate cherry fritter. You won't find that extreme variety and experimentation anywhere else! Fluffy, light, airly, fresh, and full of flavour I love their doughnuts. To help beat the heat of summer The Doughnut Stand also just released a menu of homemade frozen treats. Popsicles, chocolate dipped bars, and even doughnut ice cream sandwiches filled with Dee Dee's own ice creams. Yes! You heard right, doughnut ice cream sandwiches! The Doughnut Stand is open on Saturdays for the market and other select dates they post on their Facebook pages. They're often at local events nearby or other venues spreading that doughnut-y goodness.

I get a vague sense they do have other doughnuts but I am instantly and always drawn the Maple Bacon. I mean a yeasty doughnut doused in sweet, sticky maple glaze to which crispy, salty nuggets of bacon adhere, I ask you, what else could you ever want? I may try some other flavours but my heart will always belong to the Maple Bacon.

It's a pretty easy concept to get - for a $5 charge per head you can stay as long as you want and play as many different games as you want. And they have walls of them. My friends knew what they wanted to play going in, so we didn't need any game playing advice, but you can get that from the staff as well. There's also a big ol' wall of games by the entrance if you want to purchase one to take home. They have a very good selection of local beers on tap and in bottles, as well as a small menu with mostly snacky type foods, although they have a few more substantial things like sandwiches. And being a cafe, they of course have several options for your caffeine addiction. Game night was super fun, and the staff checked in frequently to keep us topped up on beverages. The trivia night was awesome. It was Simpsons themed, and they went all out for it with the hosts dressing up, and new menus being printed, with some things re-named and a couple special items like "Guff" beer - a special batch from Garrison - and the Forbidden Donut - a pink icing-dipped classic. The beer was an easy going brew, like Duff would be, but better than a big macro brand beer. I also got the Meaty One sandwich, which has roasted chicken, bacon, havarti, and green and red peppers. It's a solid sandwich, but the southwest dip I chose to go with it really went a long way in adding some more complex flavours to it. I capped off my healthy meal with the Forbidden donut. It wasn't up to Ol' School Donuts level of donut game, but it was a respectable entry. The business is one of a kind in the city, and it's great to see it doing really well and adding to options of social activities to do in Halifax.
