This is an exceptional human being, an artist, who cares deeply about the quality of her work. She put onto (gorgeous) paper a poem that I had written for my father on his 90th birthday. It is just beautiful and it will be a deeply meaningful gift for my dear old dad. The framer, who deals with fine art, was bowled over by her work and asked for her contact information. In this era, when everything is cranked out on a computer, what Rona does feels like a miracle. She's also a beautiful human being, with a heart and a soul, who knows literature and music--it was such fun to visit with her. I cannot recommend her highly enough. I can't wait to find the next project so I can work with her again. Oh, and considering the caliber of her work, her prices are reasonable.

We were referred to Rona by Flax Art in SF from where we had bought a beautiful sheet of art paper…read more(20x30"). Our vision was to have our initials and wedding reception date in calligraphy on the paper and have our reception guests sign it. We would then frame it and hang it in our home. I called Rona immediately since we were 3 weeks away from our event and she called me right back. We talked about what I was looking for and she told me her rate of $75/hr, which I think is very reasonable for what we needed. She also asked me to send photos of the art paper and a sketch of what I wanted. Rona said she could work on our calligraphy that weekend so we dropped off our art paper to her and waited to hear back from her. We picked it up the following week and it was beautiful. She left a lot of space for our guests to sign around our initials and after our first guest signed it, we realized just how challenging it must have been for Rona to do the calligraphy on the art paper. It is handmade from bark so has texture and is absorbent, and the gold paint is not easy to mark over. Our archival and non-smearing ink pens did not write over the gold paint on the paper but it turned out fine. Thank you again Rona. Your art will be part of our home and life as a married couple!

Working with them was a powerful reminder of the massive difference between a faceless online website and a local physical store. The quality was far superior, the turnaround was just as fast, and the personal support was incomparable. Munnie, in particular, is an absolute gem. She took our custom design and used her incredible knowledge of color science and printing to actually improve it, ensuring the final product was vibrant and professional. She even went above and beyond to design custom envelope liners that perfectly matched our aesthetic. I am blown away by how fast, competent, and high-quality this team is. I've learned my lesson: I will always go local for my printing needs from now on. I can't recommend them enough. It was a truly a 5-star experience!

One of the women working there made us especially uncomfortable--she kept following us around and watching us as if we were stealing. There was no smile, no greeting, and overall just a very unfriendly atmosphere. When I mentioned at the end that a more welcoming attitude toward customers would go a long way, she seemed completely indifferent. Update: The experience got worse--the staff didn't even bother to properly wrap a candle, and by the time I got home, it was already broken. After reading other reviews on Yelp, I realized this doesn't seem like a one-off situation. Many others have had similar experiences, which makes it seem like this kind of unwelcoming behavior is a pattern.

We live in the neighborhood and love supporting our local businesses, but the few times I have been in this store left me wondering why I even try supporting a business that clearly doesn't want me shopping there. Today was the last time I will ever step foot in this store again. No greeting, just a hand reaching for the merchandise I was trying to buy. No thank you, either. Seriously, why have a shop if you can't be bothered offering any kind of basic customer service? People wonder why brick and mortar stores are dying...well, this is the reason.

The online sign-ups are easy to make and her sessions book up quite quickly (there's a maximum of 10 people per session). It seems like there are am and afternoon session on weekends with the occasional weekday class as well. Her studio is located in Hayes Valley and is just a few blocks away from a Boba Guys stop, haha, which was where we went after class (Octavia and Haight). This class is great for the absolute beginner, but since the bulk of the time together, two and a half out of the three hours, deals with actually practicing strokes, lowercase and uppercase letters, I think the main value in this class would be in getting to ask Brianne specific questions. If I could do it over again, I'd probably try writing letters outside of class and then come in with specific questions, especially on how to connect certain letters. Brianne was kind enough, though, to offer her email address so that we could reach out with any questions following the class. You leave class with two different nibs, an oblique pen holder, glass dropper bottle filled with black ink, Rhodia paper pad, and handouts detailing out the alphabet and numbers in one calligraphy style. The sheer variety of materials out there was overwhelming for me to sift through so I appreciated getting to come to class and receive Brianne's tried and true favorites as starters. Light snacks (popcorn and cookies - chessmen and Milano), water and pink lemonade were offered, but since the AM session runs from 10 AM to 1 PM I would recommend eating a semi-hearty breakfast beforehand. If you've been meaning to dive into the word of modern calligraphy I can't recommend Brianne and Brown Fox enough! (Update: If you live in the East Bay/Peninsula - a great alternative would be Ellie Camp's Calligraphy - Early Bird prices start at $85, full price is only $100)

I got to know Brianne in my single days, looking for a fun hobby in calligraphy. I heard of her through word of mouth at a calligraphy meetup; I took her weekend class (when she still had a full time engineering job) and I loved every minute of it. I made a second class of hers into a Mother's Day activity. Over the next few years I noticed her work across a few acquaintances' weddings and loved it. Once I got engaged, I knew exactly who I wanted for invitation suite and other wedding needs. Brianne has been such a pleasure to work with, amongst the mayhem of other wedding vendors. Even through her own wedding and honeymoon she's been such a sweetheart and her work is gorgeous.
