Berkeley High school class of 1970 reunion held at Island Picnic Area in Tilden Park June 26.
32 attendees out of class of 700+. Why so few? Few people wanted to show how their looks have changed 51 years later!
Could not find my high school senior yearbook, as apparently wife overzealously tossed it during the pandemic clean up days. Ending up bringing my high school junior yearbook.
Hardest part was finding the place.
Could have come the long way through Marin Ave in Berkeley, but drove my 2017 Honda Fit stick shift car, and no way driving a stick shift on steep uphill road inching up behind other cars at the half dozen plus stop signs.
We were coming from Sunnyvale, and had to take highway 24 through the Caldecott tunnel, Fish Ranch road, Grizzly Peak Blvd, Golf course Drive, and then Wildcat Canyon Rd. Winding mountain roads, with blind curves, and bicycle riders. When you come to an intersection, the signage is not clear as the roadways are not perpendicular.
I took my time, but always had BMW and Audi tailgaters on my rear trying to make me go faster, with no place to pull over. To make things worse, GPS and Google Maps are lost with weak internet access in this remote area.
Looked for the Brazil room, found it, and made a reference to the Island Picnic Area. Noticed right away that there were at least 30 paved perpendicular parking spots right next to the picnic area, with restrooms right on the road. Plenty of parking, no need to rush to get here early in the morning.
Dan M stole the show driving a 1970 white convertible to the reunion.
Place has six picnic tables with benches, water fountains, bathrooms, grassy areas, grills, and children's playground.
Temperatures in the high 60s under shady trees and a brisk wind in Berkeley, compared to 99 degrees in Cameron Park, 108 miles away where Beverly P came from!.
I remember names very well, and could connect the names with faces, once I saw the yearbook pictures, as people's facial features stay the same through the years.
Met classmates Nancy R T from Campbell and Beverly L from Cupertino. Should have checked the Facebook accounts. If I had known, we could have carpooled the 55 miles to this place. Next time!
I brought Costco smoked salmon slices. Another person brought KFC, but came too late after I was stuffed. The deviled egg came too late also. Loved the corn dish with quinoa and raw onions.
$3 per person to cover the $85 picnic reservation fee for 3 picnic tables 10am-6pm. Several people only had $20s, but David H would have gladly accepted that instead!
David H, the man in charge, baked a lasagna, complete with mushrooms and sausage, kept warm, which could feed all 30 people and then some. So much food that he welcomed people to doggy bag it home! Such delicious sausage lasagna, I ate so much of it, I had to cancel my 4pm tennis match with my sister in Berkeley!
I appreciate David H for reserving the picnic area, paying for the reservation, organizing, including contacting some 300 e-mail addresses of the 700 graduating class. 1100 people in the class. Legend has it that 400 of them had diplomas held up due to unpaid overdue library book fines! read more
