The service was over the top, but certainly attentive. The food was good, but not great. We all ordered Dal Soup, and here's where things went slightly awry. Mark and I received our soup first. It was good. Another bowl of soup (?!?) arrived for our friend. It was THICK compared to mine. In fact, mine was fully liquid and hers was overflowing with lentils. THEN... another soup came out. We were so very confused we were still asking about the thick lentil soup (?) at the end of the meal. We were told it is supposed to be eaten with the rice, or whatever you might be eating. I'm still not sure I understand. I ordered my go-to, Saag Paneer. Mark and I split a Garlic Naan. The naan was great. The flavor, the temperature, the consistency.. it was perfect. My Saag Paneer was good, but when it was delivered the server called it something along the lines of 'Chicken Saag', which is not what I ordered. I mentioned I ordered Saag Paneer, which cheese, not chicken. She then told me it was Saag Paneer. Indeed it was, but can we compound the overall confusion for the evening? Yes we can. Mark had Chicken Tikka Malasa or something similarly named. Be ordered it with a spiciness of 5 out of 6. His review of his meal... it was hot (and he likes "hot") and that was about it. Flavor was either overpowered by the spice level or simply didn't exist. Either way, he was unimpressed... and he loves Indian food. It's really his review that brings us to a three-star review. I tasted one small piece of our friend's Tandoori Chicken. This was after she packed leftovers for her daughter. The piece I tried was small, tender and had a strong flavor of some type of sauce. I think generally the Tandoori Chicken was dry (meaning not wet), but there had to be some sauce on the plate. Bottom line... for us, Ambar India Restaurant provided typical Indian cuisine. And though the staff were super attentive, we found ourselves confused. The food is good and if you live in the area it's a good spot for Indian, though there are many options in the area. It was busier than we expected, but it didn't affect our very attentive service. We started with a different appetizer than usual (for us), the Papadi Chat. A simple cold salad mix of chickpeas, apples, onion, and spices. We didn't really know what to expect, but it was tasty and something I could easily replicate at home. For entrees, we happily devoured 2 saag dishes (Chicken Tikka Saag and Saag Paneer), as well as Dal Makhani. I can't write this review without mentioning the naan. The garlic may have been one of the best garlic naans I've had - flavorful garlic flavor with so many actual garlic pieces adhered. BUT the star of the show was absolutely the Kashmiri naan. Do not pass this up!!! Maybe the best and most unique naan overall I've ever tried. Dramatic statement but true. Everything was delicious, although I didn't really get any spicy heat from the masala, so I'd probably go with a 4 or 5 (out of 6) next time. The garlic naan was amongst the best I've had, it was on the thinner side of naan and was buttery and garlicky as you'd expect. The raita was great. It was thick and filled with tasty veggies. The ladies working there couldn't have been kinder and even provided a big to-go cup of water to a gentleman was working on his car that had broken down in the parking lot on this super hot day. All in all, definitely stop by if you're in the neighborhood and have a hankering for some Indian food.

(Chicken tikka is dry, smoky, tandori grilled chicken pieces fried with peppers and onions in a red oil, while chicken tikka masala is grilled chicken simmered in a rich, creamy, spiced tomato sauce.) Both of our favorites are still good. Recently, however, we ordered a large carry out dinner and were unable to get the Chicken Tika. We wound up with Tandori Chicken, which my husband liked, but I felt was dry.) I suspect there is either a new manager or a new owner again. They have increased their wine and beer offerings. The menu is newly printed (but still huge.) They have added some fusion dishes. A few days ago, they played Indian music on what seemed to be a repeating loop. The music loop should be longer as the same singers popped up with the same songs several times while we were in the restaurant. Some other guest asked why the tissues on the tables? We order our food medium hot (3 on a 6 point scale) and often need to blow our noses as a result. Nice to have the tissues instead of using your napkin! We often order Naan with our meals. We favor garlic naan but all of their breads are very good. We're less enthusiastic about their appetizers, but there is also so much food served with their main menu items that if we order appetizers, we eat much less of the main. We seldom get dessert in any restaurant. We are less likely to order them in an Indian Restaurant as we find Indian desserts too sweet for our tastes.
