Price is in line with most tiki bars we have been too, not a place to belly up to a bar all day at, but perfect for a drink or two after work or before dinner at one of the great restaurants within a couple of hundred yards away. The place was a bit expensive, but every town needs a good tiki drinks place! The outside was a bit sketchy (there was trash and some worrying fellows outside). Luckily there was a bouncer outside making sure everyone was of age. The bartenders were fast and knowledgeable. I enjoy the whole tiki experience. The drinks were very interesting! I was able to try a bunch of rum that are not readily available! The drinks were very unique and had such uncanny tastes. They had many very cool mugs that you can choose to get along your drink... my only gripe is wondering what's the point of offering drinks with specific mugs if you can only experience that if you buy the mugs. Many other places let's you enjoy the drink in the custom mug, but then upgrade to keep the mug. I hope the critique is not unfair to say. read more

If you are looking for a fun, dimly lit but colorfully decorated Polynesian themed bar experience you have to come to Tiki-Ko. The drinks are cute, fruity, and sweet and make it a cool time. I'm leaving two reviews here: one for Tiki-Ko and one for The Sinking Ship. Tiki-Ko: I'm not big into the tiki scene, but my mom is, and since we had business in Exeter, we decided to stop in here. The ambience inside was all over the place (like tiki bars are supposed to be), lots to look at. I can't say anything about the drinks as I did not drink (can't very well drink alcohol and then go get a tattoo). But great ambiance and very friendly bartenders. Gabrielle was very very attentive and very sweet! Sinking Ship: This was more my thing, still tiki, but a lot more pirate/ship (no duh, the name alone should have clued me in). Much preferred the ambience in here as it was decorated so nicely! Not nearly as busy (decor wise) as Tiki-Ko but still, lots to look at. Again, can't say anything about the drinks as I did not drink (can't very well drink alcohol and then go get a tattoo). But great ambiance and friendly people. Sinking Ship though is downstairs, and I have a bad hip, so that wasn't fun, but the bouncer was super nice to me having to go so slow up and down, and even moved over as far as he could so I could have ALL the room. So, I ended up dropping in here with some buddies on our annual 'Christmas Pub Crawl' on a Friday night. It's a really interesting little place so I decided to go back the next night with my girlfriend to show it to her. We walked up at 8:00pm on a Saturday evening and the guy manning the door is having a conversation with 4 people about getting into the bar. We politely wait behind them and when the conversation pauses but nobody moves I politely ask if we are going to be able to get in for a drink. The door guy goes on a weird rant about having 2 10 person parties at 9 and he needs to manage the 'numbers' and he rambled on and on and on and on.... When he stopped, I asked him "Ok, it's 8pm, your parties are at 9, we just want to come in for a drink is that ok?" He replied with more rambling about making the "Numbers make sense". At that point I thanked him for his time and turned around to leave... He and the others were laughing at us and then as we walked away he let the other 4 in. NOT a good impression. Upon stepping in to this establishment it's a beautiful bar, the drinks were really good the decor was on point. We had a pretty dismal experience at another establishment around the corner and headed here before dinner for a few cocktails. We were greeted with warm welcomes and found ourselves a spot at the bar. Our server was busy, but still managed to be super efficient and never left us feeling as though we were forgotten. Who would've thought that Bakersfield would have a fully themed Tiki Bar?! It reminds me of Trader Sam's in the Disneyland Hotel. Decked out in tropical themed decor, this bar is the real deal. We ordered some crazy drinks including the shark attack that came covered in "blood". Super fun theme. While I can't say I loved the taste of my drink, I was digging the fun vibes. This place is TINY though so either get here early or be prepared to wait. Seating is super limited and it's so tight that it can get a little stuffy. Ummm....did I just find my favorite spot in The 'Field? On a hot summer day some friends took me to Tiki-Ko for the first time. The outside is so unassuming and I really wasn't ready for what was lying beneath the street level. I had heard good things but had not had a chance to visit due to pandemic related closures. Before my visit I already had a lot fo respect for the business and the way they prioritized health and safety of their staff and guests over profits. OMG did we get transported to Disneyland? The gentleman at the door greeting everyone was so friendly and really set the tone for the experience. The lighting and the decor and the music create a great ambiance. It feels like a safe place to relax and enjoy some libations. There are no windows as you are downstairs/underground and it really helps with the immersive experience. I loved the little details like the flickering candles at the tables and various pirate themed items carefully placed around the room to catch your eye. A quick glance at the menu shows that this place isn't relying on any gimmicky drinks and doesn't feel the need to overdo it. The menu is not overwhelming and yet there is something for everyone. The ingredients all seem well thought out and the cocktails are carefully crafted. I had a mezcal based drink and I loved how balanced and smooth it was. The smokiness was not overwhelming and I could easily see myself drinking a few of these. If you're looking for some magic and a little getaway, I recommend checking out Tiki-Ko. Just be warned that you probably won't want to leave. read more

This place is a treat! I'm actually upset that I didn't know about it earlier. We went around 8:45pm on a Saturday and waited for a few minutes to get in. The ambiance and setup is perfect. I've been to a few tiki bars in different cities and this is definitely at the top of the list. The space is cute and intimate. We grabbed a seat near the back wall and studied the menu. There are several cocktails to choose from. We tried 4 different cocktails between 2 people and were happy with each one. They're well prepared, aesthetically pleasing, and delicious. The bartenders are friendly and work quickly. There were families, couples, friends- there's room for everyone here and it's not very crowded. The balance is ideal. There was a longer line around 11pm when we were leaving so you can decide what time suits you. I wish they served some food or snacks to go with the drinks but that's a minor suggestion. I believe everything is pre ordered, but what isn't now a days. We've always loved their stiff tropical drinks and their to-go ready to mix drinks are definitely some of the best in town. They don't have their normal hours, due to Covid, unlike some of the other bar choices in town, but Tiki-Ko isn't your normal bar. I'd say if you want an option for a night out you have to give Tiki-Ko a shot. They have a great online menu, which you can order ahead of time, along with their spiked Dole whips and some pretty sweat merchandise. When friends are visiting from out of town, this is the bar I like to take them too. It's a fun, unique part of Bakersfield that is a pretty easy crowd pleaser. While drinks are on the pricier side, they do not skimp on the booze. We had their La Rosa shake one time, and well, I reccomend sharing if you are a light weight. The big issue, this place is small. They are working on the downstairs, but for now, the top floor can only accept less than 40 at a time. That also means that seating can be very limited. congrats Tiki-Ko. In my wifes 65+ years on this earth she has never been denied entry into a bar before until last night at Tiki-ko. 4 of us age 50-68 had a nice dinner at mama roombas and walked in the rain to Tiki-ko (nice short walk). The streets, restaurants and bars were empty as it was a Wednesday night around 7:30 pm with light to moderate rain. Surprised-shocked really due to all of our ages, the bouncer asked for our ID (it had to be a "drivers license in his hands"). Because of the rain my wife did not bring her purse (I was in charge of paying for things last night) but she had a copy of her Driver license as well as her passport handy in her phone. The obstinant bouncer would not even look at her phone--he insisted that all that would do was if he had her "drivers License in his hand". I should point out that beyond the ridiculousness of this request because of all of our ages, in the day of covid shouldn't he have gloves on/using hand sanitizer and preferably avoiding hand contact in the first place. Everywhere else in the world (sporting events, concerts, airlines, etc, etc, etc) the trend is to show info/ID/tickets on your phone---not give paperwork/etc to someone elses filthy hand and potentially spread disease. If the 18 year old grocery store clerk can tell when someone is clearly over 40 years old and all others will be carded, why is it that someone hired to be a bouncer, whose main job is to let people in, can't even tell that we are 3 x's the legal age of 21 y/o. If he is such an untrustworthy employee that even 90 year olds need to hand over their drivers license to him then he should not be employed. The owners of Tiki-ko should be ashamed of having him as an employee and or be ashamed of themselves for making such a ridiculous rule for him to follow religiously with no room for common sense. If you are having a problem with underage entry into your establishment, I can assure you that harassing and denying 50+ year olds will not help that problem. I hope you enjoy your 18-30 y/o clientele--I can assure you you will never have a visitation from us or anyone we tell our story to. Owners, it's time to wake up and fix this issue if you want to attract us and those of similar age to you establishment. P.S. my average review--around 500+/yr is a 4.2---congrats on your 1 star review--you deserve it. PS--we walked a couple of blocks and had a wonderful evening at Foxtails. read more

They make their own syrups and plenty of their other ingredients, too. They have classic tiki drinks and have also created many of their own tiki drinks, which are incredible. This is a bar. This is a theme bar. This is a tiki bar in the tradition of the 50s resort, theme everything, Route 66 overdone and absolutely marvelous! The drinks! Great!
