Oops, having forgot to review here after my first visit, a second rendezvous with other lovely Yelpers allows me to correct this oversight.
So, Tiger Hornsby, an interesting name; quick bit of Googling reveals there is actually someone out there with said name, whom the owner met in London. Well there you go, you learn something new everyday.
With its quirky name and good location on Newcastle's Quayside, I really do like this place. TH is plush and stylish without being overly showy, has a great ambience to it and is a refreshing alternative to the other offerings in the area. Does operate a moderate dress code - gents you'll be fine with shirt, jeans and decent shoes (ditch the trainers), ladies, erm, not sure what that means for you...
Primarily marketed as a cocktail bar, but as someone who is not into cocktails that much I cannot really comment on these fairly. There is a great range of beers on offer, both draught and bottled, these are very good and are served in the proper glasses, which is a nice touch. Prices can vary, some cocktails will leave you little change from a tenner, the beers were just over £3 for a pint, but then this is not your bog standard pub on the corner.
Staff are very friendly and attentive, often coming over to the table to check if anyone needed a fresh drink and bringing funky little bowls of snacks (for free) - spiced popcorn, rather nice, not that we got to eat much of it as one of our party (who shall remain nameless) took a real liking to the stuff!
The other thing that I really appreciate - and this is clearly a getting older thing - is that the great music they have here is not too loud. So you can actually talk to your friends without shouting too much. Oh, and the first time we were here, there was a DJ with a live sax player, which was superb.
Gets busy, especially of a Saturday (that's the Quayside for you), so if you are planning a visit (which I think you should), it might be worth calling up and reserving a table. Do it soon. read more
