The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

The bartenders are well-trained, and stocked with all the right garnishes and skill you expect for great drinks. I celebrated my 27th at Florita's, and it was remarkable. What is it with everyone's obsession with getting around as many venues as is humanly possible in one evening down these parts? If a place is decent in size, business, drinks and clientele, why move? Just lean back and enjoy for cryin out loud! Rant over. This time round, we had done some homework and prepared a mini pub crawl for ourselves. Floritas was first on the list. I have to say, I wish it had been nearer the last. Wonderfully bohemian venue that, unlike many other nearby pubs, stays open til 3am. I repeat: why move? Young enthusiastic staff do their best to provide conversation and cocktails to the best their ability, and I was surprised by the pride in some of these guys given their age. Obviously a career path they want to get right. Respeck! Anyway the layout was cool. After chatting to some locals we discovered the trend was to move along the 'Diamond Strip', Florita's being the 2nd (?) venue along the way. Next along was Perdu, which despite the size advantage of it, I have to say I favoured Floritas for the simple fact they had seating options; Perdu came across as a bit of a glorified dance floor in comparison. Another plus was the downstairs access to Madame Koo's beneath the bar. Still a little surprised I didn't get to this bar considering I walked past on my way to the toilets a few times and it looked great. Weird one. Nice little beer/smokers garden, lots of nooks and crannies to get lost in, friendly, talkative staff, Floritas punched quite high in most respects. The only real negative were the prices... but I could say that about any bar on the Diamond Strip. Or Newcastle for that matter!

Bit of a difficult one to grade this time. Having been here a few years back for a work Christmas…read moredo, had another opportunity to return here for dinner with some colleagues. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.
