A really cool bar that hosts some of the best nights for students; cheap drinks and good music - what else do you need?

Love the location of this restaurant! It's right on the Tyne river, so there really isn't a bad…read moreseat in the entire place with the beautiful glass windows all over the place. It's a great spot for a spot out in town whether it's just for a meal out or a lively night out on the weekend. The only reason I had to give four stars was because when we went, we tried ordering multiple things on the menu which we were told they did not have that day, which was unfortunate, but the food was pretty good and I would definitely go back!

I was on a walk with my girlfriend when we passed this place and decided, we come back here later after our walk to have a drink. But first I needed to go to the toilet. So I went inside alone while my girlfriend waited outside. I went to the bar and asked to go to the toilet (I didn't know where it was), but also tried to explain, that we come back later to have a drink, because I didn't want them to think that I only use this place for going to the toilet and some venues also reserve toilets only for customers. While I tried to say, that we come back later, the blond "girl" or "waitress" at the bar interrupted me and told me, that next to the gentleman's toilet is the disabled toilet and the lady's toilet. WTF? Why tell me this? I didn't ask for this and I was born a man and I'm still a man, last time I checked. I also don't look like a girl, otherwise my girlfriend would surely not be with me, would she? I have slept probably with a dozen girls in my life and none of them had a negative comment about my anatomy, instead I have gotten quite a few compliments. And I have rejected at least as many other women in my life. I don't want to brag, but these weird people kind of force me to do it to make my point. So I wonder, is this blond "waitress" transgender or LGBTQ or something and projects this onto customers? Or what is going on here? So I told her, as you can see I'm a gentleman and then she told me where the toilet is. But that's not all. After I went for the walk with my girlfriend we came back as planned for the drink. My girlfriend sits down and I go again to the bar to order beer. Before I can say anything, another "waitress", a black "girl" greets me with the words: "Do you want to go to the toilet?" Again, WTF? I guess the other "girl" told her some weird stuff about me, that I wanted to go to the lady's toilet or some other perverted defamation like this. So they lie and defame and try to do character assassination of customers. Just for fun or do they have a mental illness like gender dysphoria, are transgender themselves and project this onto normal people, that other people must be transgender too by default? Decide for yourself, but why would any normal man or woman go there as a customer to be treated like that? Maybe LGBTQ people and transgender people would be happy to go there. This woke mind virus really has become a mental health pandemic which starts to make simple interactions in public difficult. I noticed that the LGBTQ community gives straight biological males weird names like "cis-male" or something (I don't know exactly and I don't care) instead of just "male", as if born a male and staying a male is something weird. It's no surprise that according to statistics leftist/woke people have the highest rates for mental illness and psychotherapeutic drugs. And now they try to do character assassination of mentally sane people by projecting their issues on them. Be warned.

The Botanist was an excellent find when we stayed the night in downtown Newcastle. Located on Monument Mall, you have to up three flights of stairs or take the lift (elevator) to reach the main bar and lounge that has a strong botanical garden theme that is quite beautiful, especially with the location being under a dome. The dome is gorgeous and really enhances the botanical garden and atrium effect. The cocktails are very good as well. I ordered a buttered coconut old fashioned that was quite rich and creamy, but very satisfying with the toasted coconut and butter-washed Makers Mark bourbon with homemade salted honey syrup. My wife enjoyed her Botanist Ultimate Gin & Tonic as we took a table with these plushy lounge chairs. The bartender was fantastic and friendly in making us the cocktails. Really nice guy who made us feel at home. Additionally, they have a rooftop balcony to enjoy the drinks; however, on this evening, it was windy and cold (at least for us Floridians) to where we decided to stay warmer inside. But we would return in a heartbeat.

Bit of a difficult one to grade this time. Having been here a few years back for a work Christmas…read moredo, had another opportunity to return here for dinner with some colleagues. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.
