Stumbled across this old pub by accident on a night out and was impressed that it was quiet and unpretentious, yet still had a great 'pub' atmosphere. It's a big pub but the layout with the stairs and open floors gives it a cosy small put feel. The courtyard outside looks great and I'm looking forward to a nice sunny day to go and have an 'al fresco' beer.
Have been back a couple of times for Sunday lunch and have been very impressed - even this afternoon with a local footie match on it was busy but not threatening or unpleasant. The atmosphere is hard to describe - think 'old mans pub' but for younger people - I arrived quite a bit earlier than my friends but was quite comfortable walking in on my own, ordering a pint and sitting at a table. I've also been impressed with the beers - haven't tried the wine yet but the beers are tasty and plenty of info about them for the less knowledgeable beer connoisseurs like myself. The staff were patient and friendly.
Also impressed with the food - on both occasions the I had the roast beef and my friends also ordered roast lunches - very reasonably priced at £8.45 and the plate was stacked full and was well cooked and tasty. Service was quick, 10-15mins for our food to arrive, even on a busy Sunday. Would be equally good for a group lunch or a cosy couples date.
Highly recommended for a cheap and cheerful Sunday lunch pub experience. read more
