Smallcakes Scottsdale has been on my radar for awhile. I drive by it on my way to and from soccer practice often... I happened to drive by this place today so I popped in to check it out, and grab someone else a cupcake. The store was cute and clean! I was greeted by a nice woman who helped me out as I gazed upon all of the flavors. Seriously, if I didn't have any self restraint for the day, I would have walked out with a dozen. I rarely give a low rating and I so badly wanted to love this place. My wife and I were craving a homemade pie and this place advertised pies so we drove there and arrived at 5pm. Their hours showed that they were open until 6pm so we were good. When we walked in, there wasn't anyone in the front near the counter. A young man came walking out of the back with a plaid shirt over his work "Tiffy's" shirt and a knit cap on. Wasn't sure if we were at the right place or a skateboard shop. He was even finishing up eating something in the back as he came out. He greeted us but it wasn't the bubbly type of greeting you expect to get in a business that someone is trying to grow with their hard baking efforts. We asked what pies were available and he informed us that those have to be pre-ordered a day ahead of time so we turned to the cupcake collection. It was very sparse with not a whole lot of choices. Not sure if this business has ever head of Nothing Bundt Cakes or Sprinkles but they have stiff competition. We bought some peanut butter cookies, a sugar cookie and a confetti cupcake. The peanut butter cookies came in a package of two cookies, two very small cookies. They were not very tasty like when you make them at home with butter and all of the good stuff. There was no chew or crunch to them. The sugar cookie came in a package of one and was just okay in terms of flavor. The cupcake was good as well but didn't wow us. I wouldn't make a special trip just to have one. I hate to say this but it feels like a sad little cupcake shop. No vibe or music when you walk in, no inventory on shelves, no experience at all. I hope they do well and succeed but not sure they have what it takes to compete against other cake, pie and cupcake places like the ones I mentioned. read more
