(Spoiler alert, it is currently around my neck and I haven't even left the country yet.) I had a Thursday afternoon to shop and did a quick Yelp search to find the right jeweler, so I wouldn't be flying blind in a city I had only been to once before. I found both Varoujan and Australian Diamond Brokers and am so thrilled I did. I immediately felt comfortable with everyone I met and never felt like I was being sold to at any point. Most importantly, their pieces were stunning. I mean, truly, truly stunning. The first pendant I was presented was beyond incredible, which also meant it was larger than I wanted and a bit more pricey. Immediately after, I was presented with an oval shaped blue opal surrounded by diamonds that was instantly the one! After they worked with me on price, and offered to turn around a new chain within a day, I was sold and over the moon. Now, just one day later and with said pendant happily dangling from my neck, I am an ecstatic customer. The extra bonus is I showed Varoujan a ring I wear that I've never really loved. (Family diamond that I DO love in a setting that doesn't do it justice.) I asked his advice for what he'd do to highlight the diamond and within minutes he had drawn a beautiful design that I'm in love with. I am incredibly thankful for that extra help and advice. Bottom line...a wonderful experience. I would give more stars if I could.

The workmanship and quality is unparalleled and you would not be able to find the same attention to detail, care and quality in any major jewlery retailer. Myself and my partner are extremely pleased with the ring and will be returning for our wedding bands and more in the years to come.

This is a fancy-looking store right by the Museum of Contemporary Art (the street side, not the…read moreharbour side). They carry both opals and South Sea pearls, in addition to having a few sapphires, so mineralogically, you're covered for Australian gem souvenirs. The staff are friendly and eager to tell you about opals; jewelry ranges from stunning and incredibly expensive to actually quite affordable (ask for the opals set in sterling silver). The salesclerk who was watching me not only told me they were having a sale, but whipped out her calculator without me asking to convert the price into US dollars (the first question in any tourist-oriented store is always "where are you from?"). She volunteered that they could do the tax-free paperwork in the store and explained exactly how it worked. (I recommend this; no standing in line at the airport.)

The most precious opals in Australia come from Lightning Ridge, Queensland, and Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy comes from the Aboriginal language and means "white man in a hole." The miners and their families live underground to escape the brutal summer heat of the Australian Outback, hence the name of the city. It was so interesting to learn more about these precious gems from Lucy at Cosmopolitan Jewellers. The famous Black Opals from Lightning Ridge. The unique Queensland Boulder Opals filled with brilliant colors. The stunning milky white opals from Coober Pedy. Lucy gave us what turned out to be a two hour lesson in the history of opals. So amazing to see so many different types of opals. We were even able to hold a precious black opal that cost $330,000 AUD. Just stunning. Thank goodness my dad didn't drop it!! The store sells both set and loose opals as well as South Sea pearls, pink diamonds and other precious gems. They have beautiful items at many different price points. It is located along the historic Rocks area in the Central Business District. Thanks to Darryl at Real Sydney Tours and Lucy at Cosmopolitan Jewellers for a great experience learning more about opals. My mom loves her beautiful opal earrings that I gave her for her 60th wedding anniversary.

Although this is not the only place that Tresors exhibits, they usually have a stall at the Antiques Fair, it is soon to close so it's important to remember this shop is still around. The shop assistant told me that the shop had always stocked the "more fun" things anyway. Their pieces are a variety of costume, antique and estate collection jewelry which hasn't been tampered with, so you'll find the prices and styles range wildly. Most pieces are one-offs. I could barely tear myself away, though I've definitely made note of this one for any friends' up and coming Birthdays (or presents to myself). Without a doubt there'll be something for everyone in there, and (for the blokes) the shop assistants are just gorgeous!

But antique/ old wares stores can be somewhat intimidating, with "invite only" style security, or posh/ rude staff. I've often found myself "looking shyly", too self conscious to ask questions, and hurridly scurrying out the door. My experience today at Tresors was anything but. On taking a gulp and stepping inside, I was greeted warmly by staff, who let me look unattended for as long as I needed until I approached them for assistance. The aim today was to find the perfect 30th gift for a dear friend, something beautiful, and one of a kind. To be honest, I'd say I found that "special something" 100 times over, such was the volume and collection of antique, vintage, estate, costume jewellery and ornaments packed into this modest store. I must've spent over an hour rifiling through what felt like grandma's treasure box, scouring their many drawers of beads and semi precious stone necklaces in every possible colour of the rainbow, aurora borealis, lapis lazuli, german art deco beads, citrine and 60's vintage mod beads. Each beautiful piece had a story, and nothing was too much trouble for the staff at Tresors who respectfully and patiently answered all my questions and made thoughtful suggestions, I even learned a thing or two and had a laugh in the process =) I finally decided on a beautiful string of pastel agate beads, (pictured). THE place to come for necklaces, beads, rings, brooches, bangles, bracelets and trinkets, not simply an excellent vintage store, but a collection lovingly curated by Jenny and her lovely and knowledgeable staff who know each piece personally. I simply can't recommend this store enough, do pay them a visit!
