Was shopping for student loan refi options and was interested in Thrivent's rates until I saw the terms & conditions. Basically a stalker church. You also agree that we and any of our affiliates, agents, service providers or assignees may include your personal information in a Communication and may conduct communication using an automatic telephone dialing system. We will not charge you for a Communication, but your service provider may. So 3 years ago my father passed away. I contacted Thrivent to inquire about his Annuity with them and I was simply told (after much effort) that I would receive a lump sum payment. It was only after I referenced the Policy language that they acknowledged my option to "Continue" the Annuity instead enabling me to earn 5% interest (a very desireable rate for a guaranteed investment). My brother in another state, was then told by a different Thrivent Rep that he flat out could NOT continue the Annuity. Once again, the Policy language had to be referenced to get this more desireable option....... Now today, I received a voice message from "Jessica" at Thrivent saying " your membership status is not reflected accurately" and it's "keeping benefits from you that you are entitled to". Naturally anything "inaccurate" that effects my benefits concerns me so I returned Jessica's call, only to learn this was nothing but a ploy to get my attention so that she could sell me on becoming a member. So I confronted Jessica as to what exactly was "inaccurate" about my membership status but she could only repeat that I was "not a member" and she offered no apology for what I called deceptive (marketing). Rather she became defiant and ended the call...... Run from this group as fast as you can! They clearly do NOT practice what they preach! read more

My parents cashed a 120k IRA & after all the taxes & fees were issued around 93k which they used to buy a life insurance policy. They "borrowed" money on it twice, although I still cannot comprehend how one "borrows" their own money. However, my last surviving parent passed away over 1 month ago and even though I had all of the papers, the policy, the will, the trust fund documents, death certificates etc, I still have not received 1 dime. When I call the 1-800 # associated with claims I talk to someone different every time, who gives me a different set of papers to fill out, then tells me I will have a check in 3-5 business days, I call back a week later only to be told I did not fill out the forms right. Last week I met with the local rep who knew my parents well and he filled out the forms for me, only he waited 10 days to fax them!!!! And, I called the claims office yesterday to be told those were not right either!!!!! I was then told that the Family Trust had to have its own EIN #....OK, why the H&*%$ didn't you tell me that on the very 1st day I called to file the claim?? I decided this morning that I am about to be their worst nightmare. I am going to call them 3 times a day, every morning, every day at noon & every evening until I get my money. I have never felt more hurt, robbed & lied to by a church in my life. I can only imagine the 10's of thousands they have collected in "fees" from my parents alone. WORST company ever. It was the biggest mistake of our lives to do business with Thrivent, then Lutheran Brotherhood. It was a "salesman" in our church who sold us this policy. We thought we could trust him-Ha. When he ran out of potential customers, he moved to another church. Their customer service people are rude and arrogant with the attitude it's not your money, it's ours. You have to be a lawyer to understand the wording in the contract which is written to benefit the company. When they advertise," Expect the unexpected" do so because it's their way of saying " buyer beware". Any positive reviews must be written by the staff because the majority are all negative. I wish I could give less than a star because this company is horrible. I've been trying to process a claim with this company for months and all they do is lie and make false promises. They have had all the completed paperwork for over a month and all they say is "you're payment will be in your account tomorrow". They have deducted fees from my account but no payment. My parents invested all of their assets with Thrivent Financial... including life insurance, annuities, and long term care insurance totaling over $500,000.00. When my father passed away, the sales representative met with my mother, husband, and I and we decided to liquidate one of the annuities. We set up an appointment for the following week to sign paperwork. My mother was in the beginning stages of dementia and I specifically told the representative that my husband and I needed to be present for the meeting. He then, showed up at my mother's house at an undesignated time and had my mother sign the papers. About 2 months later I found a $2,000.00 sales fee that was undisclosed at our first meeting. When I called the representative to question him he said, "Do you think I sit at your mother's kitchen table for free"? Mr. Christian Financial Representative is an ARRAGONT you know what. He retired a couple of months later and moved from PA to CA (far enough away that no one can come after him). Since then, I filed a claim for long term care benefits because my mother requires full time nursing care. I have been getting the run around for 8 months. To date... $0.00 has been paid. I contacted the current sales representative (there have been three in the last 8 years) and she promised to follow up on a weekly basis. No follow up and no return phone calls or emails. I contacted our Lutheran church to find out if there was another contact who could help me. I was given the name of a sales representative who, when I spoke to him, said he could not help me. When I call the corporate office I get a different representative every time I call and these people have no authority to make decisions or act on your behalf. Thrivent sells financial investments under the guise of a christian organization who promises to wisely invest Lutheran client's hard earned savings. This is all a marketing scheme to illicit trust so that Thrivent can scam you. Thrivent is a fortune 500 company ranked 316 in 2017 with $116 billion in assets. But if you read the Thrivent reviews posted all over the internet the consensus is that Thrivent does not pay their claims regardless of their ability to pay. An insurance company with $116 billion in assets has the strength to pay their claims and should not be using this money for any other purpose. As others if there was an option for 0 stars that is what I would give. I no longer have accounts with Thrivent and if I did I would certainly stop after having to deal with them after my father's death. My dad had 4 life insurance policies and dealing with this company was by far the worst. I phoned into report his death and the local agent Ron Guinther was to have called me back. After approximately 2 weeks he finally phoned me only to tell me they would send me paperwork via snail mail. (all other companies was done online and very simple process). After receiving the paperwork I had additional questions so I emailed Ron. Guess what? no response. He finally phoned me and left a message about being out of town for a few weeks. By this time I had sent the paperwork in and would not call him back as I wanted my questions answered in writing. After 2 months he still hasn't answered my email. Of course now they are asking for additional information so I'm sure this will be a very long and drawn out process. Terrible company. And just try to write a complaint on their website. What a joke. Have to download a form, print, fill out and either fax or mail it in. They need to get with the times. read more

So we have been trying since December 2019 to get Thrivent to honor their commitment to pay on a LTC policy. My MIL is in a properly licensed facility and has rapidly increasing cognitive impairment. No, she is not in a coma and can still open her eyes...but seemingly this will be the requirement to "qualify". Oh but once you hit the coma stage there is a still a 90 day wait so you will be dead before you get a dime. Sweet business model! This immoral approach is apparently condoned by the leadership of the Lutheran church (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America). It looks to me like Thrivent gives "grants" to the church in exchange for the privelege of marketing to church members. No doubt some of this money goes to good causes but is it also a basic "quid pro quo"? My in laws have been life long Lutherans. They trusted their sales rep. I am sure he didn't TELL them that the policy would restrict payment to a set of unattainable conditions. I am sure he DID tell them that the policy was to help with expenses due to mental/physical decline. Exactly the situation she is now experiencing with an increase of $1200.00 a month in addition to her base rent to ensure she is safe, showering, changing into clean clothes, and eating properly. She can't remember a phone call from an hour prior. All she can really do is watch TV. And she isn't even really watching. In 2005 Lutheran Brotherhood, precursor to Thrivent, settled a class action lawsuit in Minnesota, case 0:99-md-01309-PAM, for between $18.6-24 Million. No LEGAL wrongdoing was stipulated. That's fine, but the issue is MORAL. Clearly Thrivent would not have settled unless they were worried that a jury would find them guilty of unfair business practices. Thrivent Financial is apparently a club which hawks insurance products mostly through Lutheran Churches. The babble about how they are fraternal (which I guess means club like Lion's or Shriner's) so you aren't actually buying insurance you are buying into a club. I didn't know alot about this company when I bought insurance many years ago. You generally deal with a church member you know (they have a salesman in every church) but in my opinion their products and service are totally inferior to other insurance products. Their argument is they are fraternal. Furthermore, their customer service is pathetic. It took 2 years to change the beneficiary on my mothers account when there was no loving beneficiary on the account and she was so ill she couldn't sign anything. They advised we would have to go to an attorney and have my mother declared incompetent before any changes could be made. So then you think this fraternal organization is here to help I can assure you they won't be and they are the worst of the wolves in the insurance business (my opinion). Most recently with them although I have paid my insurance yearly for years they dropped that option (again they show they really could care less about customer service). My advice pick someone else and DO NOT be swayed by someone you think is a friend at church. If this isn't enough reason not to patronize them I think they are poor value you get much more for your money with other insurance companies. thrivent is the most aptly named company ever........god forbid (no pun intended) that you get sucked into this lutheran ponzi scheme, they thrive and you vent. at least in queens, ny. my parents got bamboozled into the whole lutheran brotherhood thing when i was a little kid and i remember every now and then getting force-fed dinner at 430 pm and me and my brother getting stuffed into our pajamas early and tossed into bed because "the lutheran brotherhood man is coming tonight", accompanied by lots of huffing from my dear father and teeth gnashing and eye-rolling by my mother. as a wee naive child i never understood why you would invite someone to your house if you really didn't want them there. as i got older i learned that it was all part of a push by my parent's church to have everyone join this cult-like insurance company all the in name of lutheran do-gooding. somehow, you were a better lutheran if you joined this cult. of course my parents bought right in. fast forward to 2014 when my last surviving parent died......after all the arrangements and sadness settled down, my brother and i tried to find my mom's policies and we found 2. one for met life and one for thrivent. mom faithfully kept the name of her thrivent rep, "betty p", in her little notebook that she carried around everywhere, as if betty was a dear friend who she could call on in tough times. i am sure betty and thrivent wanted her to think so. then i found the thrivent folder in my mom's house, with a list of all the times she tried to call dear betty, and the result was always the same "no one returned my call". but she kept right on paying.....so, with trepidation i called both met life and dear-lutheran-betty and asked for claim forms. met sent me my claim form via PDF and i had my check in days, no within minutes. YAY met life. the call to dear betty yielded an argument. she refused to talk to me because she said she had no way of knowing if indeed i was even the beneficiary.....um, ok. she would however call me back "tomorrow". oh, and a visit to my house would be required as well. NO #$%&*#% WAY....i remember my childhood very well. 20 days later no call or claim form ever arrived. i called the 800 number. after 18 minutes on hold i was transferred to a "death specialist"......(cue vincent price: goooood eveeeeeninggggggggg".) ok, i was being sent a claim form but did i also happen to have my father's death certificate from a decade ago, because that would of course be needed too even though he was neither policyholder nor beneficiary. HA GOTCHA! i know exactly where it is. dejected sigh from thrivent. ok, claim form on the way. so after much ado and wrangling i got my application but my brother never got his. more calls. more venting. finally his form arrived. we dutifully filled it all out and sent it back. weeks later, nothing. a conference call to another "death specialist" yielded the information that we were missing a form. were they ever going to tell us? apparently not. this mystery form required us to swear that there were no other off-spring anywhere. HUH? how would we know, apart from what our parents told us? were our entire lives of living in a 2-child family based on some horrific lie? ok we did the dumb form. about 3 months after my initial phone call, our checks finally arrived. oh, and all this was over a minimal amount of money. yep, they thrive and you vent.... read more

I wish I could give this company a zero - and that is what they are giving our Mom. Our mom took out a long term care policy back in 1992 - after my father passed. She has paid over $100/month since. Now she is 86 years old, legally blind, and we moved her into an assisted living facility. Guess what? Thrivent said no to contact - because the facility does not meet their specific standards for nursing care. No one ever stated that we should look at a facilities license - not sure what I would have know anyway! And to top it off, they are still deducting her payments to this policy. I talked to her local rep - and he know of the circumstances for Mom - that she would not be able to stay in this facility if Thrivent did not kick in the $80/day. Now what do we do? And of course, her rep is not returning our calls. Surprise, surprise. We may not be able to do anything for mom - but perhaps we can help someone else.
