I was told I could pick up my Rental at 7:00 am and it was closed I had to sit there for an hour and 45 mins . the worker dint show up till 8:15 am our vehicle was very dirty inside. my Vehicle price was supposed to be $529.00 with 2 drivers for 11 days and when I go to pick up they are charging me $15 more per day for the extra Driver. This will end up costing me $165.00 plus fees more. I'm NOT Happy. I'm not going to be happy when I get there. I have a feeling.Tammy Sullivan read more

Thrifty Rent A Car - Car Rental Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

This business is an absolute scam. I booked a car with Thrifty weeks prior to my trip Jackson MS. Once I arrived at the airport there was no one at the counter and a line of people who had been waiting over an hour. They informed me that the person that was there had informed them there were no vehicles. So I was forced to pay triple with enterprise on the spot to just get out of there an on the road to my next stop. read more

Rented from Atlanta airport for my son graduation weekend 5/15-5/18 Terrible Experience with Thrifty - Would Not Recommend I reserved a rental vehicle in advance through my Southwest app to avoid delays and make the process as smooth as possible. Unfortunately, my experience with Thrifty Car Rental was the exact opposite. When I arrived at the rental center, I was told there was no reservation on file. I had to step out of line, find the confirmation email, and return to the counter--only then did the associate acknowledge my reservation. Even though I reserved a mid-size vehicle, I was told none were available and was forced into a full-size SUV at nearly twice the quoted price. I waited over an hour to get the vehicle, then had to spend another 30 minutes searching for the keys because no one was available to assist with checkout. To make things worse, the associate added insurance coverage even though I explicitly declined it. This felt like a blatant upsell tactic and left me feeling taken advantage of. The entire experience was disorganized, overpriced, and completely unprofessional. Thrifty made what should have been a simple rental process a frustrating and time-consuming ordeal. I left feeling like I'd been robbed. Avoid Thrifty if you value your time, money, and peace of mind. read more

Do not rent from thrifty they don't deserve any stars. They are a big scam. Purchased the full option and when signing the paper work the lady renting the car made it seem that it would be cheaper to pre purchase the full and at no time made it clear that you will not get a refund so the only way that this works is if you return the car on empty. Everything is extra at thrifty and their customer service is a joke. Do not rent from them. Would leave zero stars if possible. Do not rent from thrifty. read more

I was charged a $100.00 cleaning fee after returning a car at Chicago Ohare. All it need was a good vacuum which would have taken me 10 Minutes at most! We booked and prepaid for the rental through Wisecars. Wisecars told us that we may need to show credit card at rental desk to verify the voucher. We waited in line for 3 hours to get to the rental desk (no other rental car agencies had lines anywhere near as long!!) and then when we got to the desk the attendant asked for the credit card and signature. When we got home we realized she had charged us for extras we did not want and she did not ask us about! The $250 rental became a $600 rental! I called multiple times and was told they would look into it. Of course they did not reply and finally told me I signed the agreement and was responsible. While I was waiting for the reply they promised they sent it to a collection agency! Terrible service and overcharging by Thrifty/Hertz/Budget! I guess I am glad they did not tell the police the car was stolen - that is what Hertz did and this is the same firm. This is a SCAM operation. Read all of the reviews. YOU HAVE TO BE CRAZY TO RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! Do yourself a favor and use Lyft and Uber - I have been doing that for trips ever since and it is much less expensive! So much easier to use ride-share. No parking or directions or stress - and for LESS MONEY!! I have taken 3 trips since and taken tons of rides - never got close to $250 let alone $600 I had to pay for that car! I doubt I will rent a car again! read more

They should change the name of the company to Shifty because they are a scam! I booked my rental through booking.com and was quoted around $160. Ended up having to pay a $200 refundable security deposit upon picking up the car. No problem. The problem came when I dropped the car off at the end of my trip and the next day I received a bill that was 3 times what I was quoted. I have never seen so many bogus changes on a single bill. They charged me for unspecified "damage" of over $100. $50 in tolls when I went through a total of 1 toll my entire trip. A 6 hour late fee when the car was dropped off on time. I was absolutely flabbergasted. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these crooks and go with a more reputable company. read more

I was overall pleasantly surprised by my experience with Thrifty. I booked through them because they were the cheapest and later on got pretty worried by all the bad reviews I found online about Thrifty, saying things like how they ran out of cars, there were 1-2 hour lines, and they overcharged you a lot of the time. I experienced none of these things during my rental. There was a little mixup with the rates when we picked up the car, but they fixed it and I was very happy with the car that they gave me. The one thing with Thrifty that was true that I read from reviews was that their customer service is awful. I had to call a couple times before I picked up the car and each time was about 20-30 minutes on hold. I learned a little too late that they respond much quicker if you message them on Facebook. read more

I am very unhappy with my experience with Thrifty Rent A Car!! I was offered a device for dealing with tolls that cost an additional $11.49 a day. That sounded expensive and I had no idea of what tolls I might encounter. So, I did not take it. It turns out that I incurred $3.60 in toll fees. A week or so after I returned home I got a bill for $48.60 for the fees I had incurred. They charge $15 for every dollar of fees incurred. That is just WRONG!! I did turn down the device, but even the charge for that was way too high and it was not explained to me that they would be charging so much in admin fees. DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY - THEY ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY! P.S. I did call the phone number on their site and talked to someone about it. They reduced the admin fee in half, so the bill ended up being $26.10, still expensive for $3.60 in charges, but I paid.... read more

I wish I could give zero stars. I arrived an hour early. I was told my car class was not available and I was given an option of waiting 90 min or upgrading for 30 dollars a day. Upsell #1. Then told that I need to buy an ezpass for 11 dollars a day and if I didn't I would be fine by thrifty if I didn't pay tolls in a timely fashion. Sadly a prior threatened customer accidentally put the car in their name on toll site so I couldn't pay. Person at desk told me it wasn't their problem but the person who made the mistake and mine! Then asked me To pay 11 dollars for ez pass so I won't get penalized (got me on upsell #2) My car reeked cigarettes - like an Ash tray- I called to complain and was transfer by "customer service" (haha) to a bunch of non working numbers. I complained on return and they were nice enough to tell I did a good job by reporting or they would have charged me for the smell. Holy crap- the worst experience I ever had. Total scam artists. My family and I went to Salt Lake City in Feb 2025 and we went to pick up our reservation from Thrifty at the airport. They said they didn't have a vehicle for us and we would have to wait 3 hours. Another person next to us walked up and got a vehicle right away. I asked if they had vehicles but just not in our rented category which was a mid-size SUV. The employee said they had a Ford edge but it was in the full size SUV category which we didn't rent. I asked them to put us in that vehicle because they over booked our vehicle which was their fault and not ours. They refused and said we could pay to upgrade to the Ford Edge. I asked how much and they said it would be $650 for our 4 day car rental. I had paid $200 for our 4 day car rental for a mid-size SUV so I told them they were crazy if they were going to get triple the price when it was their fault they overbooked us. I called corporate Thrifty and they said they would try to upgrade me and asked to speak with the employees and manager at the desk. The employees refused to speak to corporate and said they don't talk to anyone. Even the manager refused to speak to corporate. It was horrible customer service at its best. After 2 hours of waiting 50 feet from the desk my wife went to ask how much longer and they said our car has been ready. We asked why anyone didn't tell us! They said we should have got a notification. I showed them my phone to prove no notification was received. They didn't apologize or try to offer any money back for their problem of making us wait. in advance, i rented a car for a 12:00 pick or after at the Salt lake airport. After multiple flight delays I realized I could not pick up until after 8. I called around 4:00 to state I was running late and they said I violated the agreement and for $75 more they would reserve my car. About 30 mins before that call I had just selected my car using a link that came in on my text. The Customer Service agent advised me I would not get car if I didn't acknowledge agreement to pay more using email which I could not access for some reason in the airport, albeit I had already selected the car from a link on my phone. They stated they could not use phone for acknowledgement, I could only agree via email. Otherwise my entire 4 day reservation was void, but I had to still pay the entire amount. Funny thing was, my son got to SLC airport before me and got into the car I selected and the keys were in it as this was occurring. I have to ask Thrifty why they would cancel a 4 day reservation, charge the patron for the entire amount or require them to pay $75 more when the patron was late due to flight delays. Appreny they know how to take the reservation, but apparent don't care to keep it read more

When we flew into Raleigh last week our car rental experience was horrific. We had to wait in line for over 1 1/2 hours to get the paperwork and then we had to wait for at least 45 minutes to get a car. People who had reserved mid-size cars were taking compacts because they were tired of waiting and the people who reserved compacts were very upset because other people were taking their cars. The people in charge of delivering the cars to the customers didn't appear to care and everything was unorganized. I will never rent from Thrifty again!!!! read more

Only if I could give a negative rating! HORRIBLE! We came to the car pick-up place in Atlanta airport in Georgia only to be told that they can't give us our reserved car because their system showed the names were showing as one name with no spaces although I showed them on my phone that everything was correct in the app. I was forced to cancel my booking and make another one when I was charged extra for the second driver even though I asked specifically to make it one driver only since it was their main reason not to give us our first reservation. After a couple of weeks, I received the receipt and saw that we were charged for two drivers and one day extra and a late fee!! Our flight was on February 2nd and they stated that we returned the car on February 3rd! That's only possible if they see some ghosts or intentionally lied and are charged for an extra day!!! WARNING: Unfair Billing and Disappointing Service at Thrifty Car Rental Dear Friends and Fellow Consumers, I want to share my recent experience with Thrifty Car Rental to shed light on their unfair billing practices and disappointing customer service. Despite my efforts to resolve the issue directly with the company, I have encountered frustration and a lack of cooperation. My goal is to help others avoid similar situations by sharing my story. On March 15th, I rented a car from Thrifty Car Rental under the understanding that I would pick it up and return it on the same day, as per our agreement. However, to my surprise, I received a bill from Thrifty Car Rental claiming that I returned the car two days late and imposing additional charges. This accusation is not only false but also impossible given my flight schedule. I had a round trip flight from Chicago to Atlanta with Delta Airlines on that day, with flight numbers Delta 1367 and 1423. Delta 1367 departed from Chicago at 7:15 am and arrived in Atlanta at 10:16 am. Later that evening, Delta 1423 departed from Atlanta at 9:55 pm and arrived back in Chicago at 10:58 pm. As you can see, it is physically impossible for me to have returned the rental car late when my flight records clearly indicate that I returned to Chicago on the same day. To support my claim, I have gathered all relevant evidence, including the rental agreement and contract that clearly state the agreed-upon return date and time. Additionally, I have flight itineraries, parking receipts indicating my presence in Atlanta for only one day, and my credit card statement showing an overcharge of $16.30 by Thrifty Car Rental. Regrettably, despite numerous attempts to resolve this matter with Thrifty Car Rental's customer service department, I have received no satisfactory response. They have not provided a reasonable explanation for the discrepancy in the return date and the overcharge. I have requested a refund of the overcharged amount and a correction of their erroneous return date, but my concerns have been ignored. I urge all consumers to exercise caution when dealing with Thrifty Car Rental and to thoroughly review their bills and contracts. Encountering such unfair practices and lackluster customer service is disheartening, especially when the evidence overwhelmingly supports my position. It is important to hold companies accountable for their actions and to raise awareness of such experiences to protect others from similar situations. I will continue to pursue a fair resolution to this matter, and I sincerely hope that sharing my story will prevent others from experiencing the same frustration and inconvenience that I have faced. Thank you for taking the time to read about my ordeal, and please exercise caution when considering Thrifty Car Rental as your rental car provider. read more

I paid Thrifty the full rate ($529.04) through Expedia prior to my trip. Five days upon returning home from the trip I've been charged $367.39 by Thrifty. I was told when checking out the car that amount was a "deposit" that would be waived upon return of the vehicle. I reserved a compact car from Thrifty through Travelocity. When I arrived in Asheville, I was told there were no cars available--no cars at all! They halfheartedly offered me a minivan, which I neither wanted (was traveling in the mountains on narrow roads) nor felt confident in driving. It was not an acceptable substitute for a compact car at all! The desk agent didn't seem to care much. I ended up having to rent a car from Alamo for more money--and again it was a much bigger car than I had reserved, which was not at all what I wanted. It was a very bad experience. Rented a car with Thrifty and I declined all the insurance etc. They charged me insurance and refused to give me my money back. Be super careful when renting with them to make sure you are not charged at the counter. They ask for a signature stating we understand the rules, but then slip in the charge for insurance. The screen is small and has a ton of wording to make it look like you are signing a normal contract for car rental, but it is really them charging your card for stuff you declined. read more

I took a recent trip to Las Vegas. I usually use SIXT and rent a 5 series BMW. The price was staggering. I booked a Ace Car Rental and then read the reviews (off airport property) and bailed. I booked a Premium car from Thrifty at the last minute...paid up front at one fourth the price of SIXT. Got to Las Vegas and took a bus to the Rental Car Center. It was 22:00 and I was tired after a 5 hour flight. Got to the counter and waited less than 5 minutes. I was greeted by a delightful lady at the counter. The process was fast and direct and she directed me out the door to a outdoor pick up counter. There I met Rowena and Terry...the night shift. What a pleasure to deal with. Terry explained they had no premium car but she would get me one from Hertz. She handed me the contract and told me where to find the car. I was expecting a Maxima and actually got a 2024 Mercedes C300 with 1700 miles on it. I love you Terry! What a pleasant way to start my 5 days in Vegas...Baby! It only used $15.00 in gas for 5 days! The price was cheap, I even got a free upgrade, and they were quick and convenient...however- I returned the car in the same perfect shape I received it in, did the walk around with the employee there, and was told everything looks good and to have a nice day. The next day, I receive a just under $500 charge for damages. Haven't been able to get ahold of anybody yet. Update:I spoke with their corporate office, was told the car smelled like smoke and I was extremely rude and argumentative about it. First off-I don't smoke, neither does my little sister that was with me. Second-the woman who took the car back was very nice and we said maybe 10 words to each other, didn't have any issues. I actually made a comment to my sister how nice she was and how quick and convenient it had been, and we now had a lot of extra time before our flight. Just like the other reviews, I definitely won't be back. I was on a company trip so I wanted to get an economical (cheap) car. The base price was $33. When I got there, she handed me a bill of $117! They charged $33 for gas even though my rental was only for a few hours. I had that removed, but still paid $90 for a few hours. I booked a "special" car. I saw compact and this for the same price. The car was no different than a compact so I'm not sure what was special about it. I get to the car & it's super tiny. Above all of that, when I turned the car on, the gas light was on. I went to the desk & the guy said I could take it on empty & just bring it back on empty. WHO DOES THAT??? I'm visiting Chicago. I don't know where gas stations are! So I then had to wait for them to go fill up my tank. They couldn't bother to just get me a different car. As for the car, it was terrible. It was a Ford of some sort. Do NOT trust Thrifty Rent A Car to honor your reservation. We booked a car at the Baltimore Washington International Airport for our travel from 9/28/23-10/02/23 and were shocked to find they had no gas cars unless you had a minimum of 2 hours to wait. All of the employees could care less that they were inconveniencing many customers, which led me to believe that this is a common occurrence. Since we still had a 3 hour drive ahead of us we opted for an electric vehicle. We were told where to go in the garage to retrieve a vehicle. As we were looking at a vehicle, a rude worker chose to drive a car right next to where we were standing to park another car. Now mind you there was an entire row of empty spots to park. He asked us what the problem was with the car we were perusing and we said nothing, we were just checking out the model since we weren't familiar with electric cars. He looked in the dashboard of the vehicle and said, well this one is gas. We asked if we could take it and he said he didn't care. So we did. The only nice person was Oliver as we were going through the exit gate. Very dissatisfying experience and I will never trust Thrifty again. read more

AVOID THESE FOLKS! Double check your contract. These folks will lie to you. I arrived very late and pre-paid my rental. I was asked if I wanted any extras. I said no. I actually thought that was easy because usually you get the hard sell on worthless extras. Only when I received my bill did I notice extras had been added. The customer service seemed well versed in this scam and wanted to blame their own customers for trusting what their employee lied about. Also be aware, these folks allow third parties to have links on their website that appear to be Thrifty's. So the rental appears attractive since it doesn't include taxes which you will still have to pay at the counter. read more

In line with my negative review of the pick-up location, I want to add that the customer service people on the phone lack empathy, understanding of how to help people in need, and English. Then at the return building at Midway, the attendant taking the car made no effort to be helpful. Thank God I violated the phone person's mandate and had my son drive the car all the way to Midway because I had fallen and sprained my shoulder. I'll just cut to the chase here. Beware, proceed with caution folks! This place is a hot mess! Poor customer service, picking up my car took way too long. There were no clear directions given by the young lady on how to locate my rental once I reached the garage. The rental was dirty inside. Crumbs near the gear and in the cup holder. Fast forward to dropping the car off (this is when I get really annoyed and so over Thrifty) Again, poor customer service. (Insert major eye roll here) What's up with all of the bad attitudes!? I wasn't greeted nor, was I given any direction on what the next steps were. The lady just said go to the window to pick up your receipt. Walked over to the window and the lady is yelling half way across the garage, "it's right there"! What's right there!? Why didn't you just say pick up your receipt from the printer!?!? Oh, and how about, have a nice trip...thank you for choosing Thrifty. How was your trip? Ugh. To end this horrible review/experience on a positive note, the shuttle was readily available and my car was reliable. Never again Thrifty. Just as the other reviewers stated, they're simply horrible. We were returning a vehicle and it was a line a mile long for returns w/1 associate to help. 1 associate w/the nastiest attitude ever! When people started asking questions the attendant started screaming and yelling that she was helping ppl who were already gone. This REALLY upset the patrons in line. I guess you pay for what you get low salaried employees w/low morale. read more

The only issue I had with my experience is the physical set-up of this location. I realize it's an airport car rental location, but since they are actually off of the airport property, they should be a little more accessible to customers who might not be arriving on a Midway flight. I'm a local resident who needed a car for the weekend. So I had a ride to the rental place, but they don't allow personal cars in the garage, so I had issues physically trying to get to the 3rd floor location to pick-up the car. Not to mention I had bags which were inconvenient for me to handle by myself. Otherwise, I received great customer service. I also received the online price and car requested... even with a last minute rental over a holiday weekend. The car was clean... inside and outside. read more

I should have checked the reviews here before even thinking of getting a car from Thrifty. The only positive part of the experience was each of the staff members who helped check the car in and out of the garage. Otherwise, the customer service experience and the additional charges were completely stressful and ruined the start of a weekend getaway. Arrived to the location to find an employee who didn't even budge from his chair or barely speak loudly enough for me to hear as he slowly, begrudgingly entered my license and insurance information for a pre-made reservation. The reservation was originally in my wife's name because she would be driving, but I planned to pay as part of an anniversary road trip we were planning. This became an immediate issue, but it was one that we understood if the pay info had to match the driver. Instead, we were convinced by the employee that it would be better to switch it into my name since I was paying and list both of us as drivers. An additional charge for this expense was never discussed, and I know because I purposely asked if it involved any additional charge (because the easy solution then would be just to have my wife put it on her card and for me to pay that off). We signed for expenses that were highlighted and went on our way. We discovered the extra charge for an additional driver in paperwork placed after the fact in the envelope with the original amount for which I signed. I called customer service as soon as I learned about this (and as we were hoping to get on our way for our trip) to be simply dismissed with "Oh, we apologize you did not understand our policy" and even when I stressed that I purposely asked, it was again placed on me for somehow failing to understand and I was told they could do nothing but I could talk to a manager if I wanted. I asked to speak to a manager but was told they couldn't do that over the phone and I could only do so when dropping the car off after my rental time was completed. Add to this that I didn't get charged for this rental until a month and a half later. The original pending charge showed up on my account (with an extra charge for each day for an additional driver, a pending charge for gas expenses, and another $100 hold) and then disappeared a few days later. I expected it to show up again and accounted for it in my own bill keeping documents, but it wasn't until today that the charge finally showed. Needless to say, I'll never even step foot near any Thrifty ever again, especially the Midway Airport location. read more
