Buyer beware!!!! we rented a car this September from this Thrifty rental in San Juan. At check out the tank was half full. We brought it to the attention of the technician and he said no worries that we would not be charged for any gas over half a tank. We took a picture of the gas gauge to make sure they didn't charge us a 9.99 refuel fee and of course put gas in the car before bringing it back. The technician on check in said there would be no refuel fee but when receiving out emailed bill one day after check out we had a $60.00 fee. Despite sending the picture of the gas gauge which showed the tank was only half full they refused to refund us the whole $60.00. Instead they gave us 45.00. Their corporate office said they couldn't do anything. Sadly despite thinking we were using a reputable company we were not. My advice is to Look at the BBB scores before renting. read more

Probably the worst car rental pickup I've ever dealt with. First the toll pass it's about $7 a day. but if you don't get it. and go through one toll, it's a $50 processing charge per toll. But whatever I've dealt with that scam before in other citlies. The main problem, they barely have any employee. After paying and doing all the paperwork you go out and hand the paperwork over to pick up your car. Then we waited over an hour and a half to get the car. A guy waiting told us that he waited hours the week before for his car. When we got to the pickup areas there was a woman and a man working. Eventually it was just one guy. He dealt with taking the paperwork and then assigning vehicles. and then showing people their cars. Poor guy was doing the job of at least 3 and doing his best. He should get a promotion and for sure a raise. He also dealt with annoyed customers well. Yea! the price was cheaper. But I've rented through budget and Alamo in that same airport. and have gotten my car right away each time. So if you don't have time to spare, pay more for way better service. Also it was a Monday. Can't imagine how long it would take on a busy day. Other than that we got a nice hundai. Looked pretty new and had no issues. my final though. Not worth the savings. read more

Horrible service. Giant line of people waiting for cars and 2 very frustrated checkin agents. Waited over an hour for a car reserved weeks ago. The gate agent gave the name Angel Guzman, the AM supervisor who was the responsible party for this entire mess. When I told Angel this he grabbed a car that should have gone to a customer and sped off. There was also a short overweight employee named Carlos who was outright combative when customers asked why he was just sauntering around with a giant line of customers waiting in the hot sun for cars. We reserved a car through thrifty. When we arrived at the airport to pick it up. We wanted to use our own insurance. They insisted we had to use there's even though I had full coverage which covered the car. The rental ended up being twice the cost it was late when we arrived so we ended up getting it. The car rental itself was 2 stars only because it took from point a to point b. It was a 2022 Hyundai that was sufficiently clean but stained seats. The pickup process was ridiculous. Was first told that we needed to provide our own car insurance policy number when we denied insurance coverage on car. Given it was 2am on Saturday night when our flight got in, our insurance company website was down for maintenance. I found an email with policy number. Then was told they needed the actual declaration page showing coverage. WHAT??? Who carries this on their person. Showed the agent, Anthony, the website was down and he replied, you have to get liability then for $13 more a day?! Again, where does it say any of this. Booked the car rental thru Expedia. Then on prepaid toll coverage, said they don't take cash at toll booths and would be fine $50 for missing a toll and toll booths not easily visible ABSOLUTELY False - they do take cash and are just like any other toll booths. We only experience one toll going to El Yunque. The prepaid toll service was $8 more a day. After he scammed me for these two things, he didn't offer prepaid fuel just told me I had to bring it back full. So instead of paying $200 for 4 days as quoted and paid for thru Expedia, the total was $300. Crazy! Talk about falsely representing information. I rent cars for work with frequency in the states but this type of misrepresentation is really upsetting. read more

While returning the car, the gentleman inspecting it told me he smelled cigarette smoke in the car and I would be charged $250 cleaning fee. I informed him that I'm a Sikh by religion and not only did I not smoke in the car, but my religion strictly forbids me from smoking. I wear a turban so it's pretty obvious that I'm a Sikh. He then apologized for his mistake and said there would be no extra charge. When I boarded my plane, I got an email from thrifty stating I will be charged $250 cleaning fee for smoking in the car. We brought this to the attention of the employee checking us out because the paper showed an F next to fuel. He assured us we would not be charged for anything over half a tank and that he was making a note of it in his tablet. We took a picture of the fuel gauge just to be safe. I have been renting cars for a very long time and this is probably the worst experience I have ever had. First there was insufficient help at check in and we waited nearly an hour to be checked in. The car we were given was in nearly new and there were not issues. However, as we were touring we started to get a flat tire. I called the helpline and they suggested we go to a Thrifty center near us and change out cars. We did this and by the time we got there the tire was completely flat. When we went to get the new car the lady at the counter of the Eugenio María de Hostos Airport in Mayaguez was extremely helpful but was concerned about us not filling up the gas tank. We were almost full but not completely. We obviously could not drive the car so she made a note to that effect in our file. When we turned the car at the San Juan airport we received no receipt. When we got home to North Carolina we saw the receipt for gas charge of $35. I called the Thrifty Center in San Juan and they would not let me speak to the manager who refused to remove the charge. I was told she doesn't talk to people on the phone only in person! Crazy and frustrating experience for sure. Lesson learned is it ok for them to waste my time and charge me for anything they can get away with. We had roadside assistance but were concerned about the length of time it would take as well as the cost to Thrifty and us being stranded on a very busy highway. read more

Overall good service, but be warned about their additional fees that are not included in the rental reservation. All of these fees add up to at least 60$ for a weekly rental. I was happy that the front desk was able to waive the underage driver age for the portion of my rental, where I was 25. Some other companies had told me its impossible. I think the lesson to take away is that you should be persistent and get what you want! Lastly, they tried to tell me that it's absolutely necessary to get the ezpass in the car. I don't think it was, because I set my gps to avoid tolls by mistake and never paid a toll. read more

Feb 19!2020. Thrifty. Yeah this is the first review I've written abought anything in year but I have to. It's common sense that if you book a rental car from an international airport that there shouldn't be any issues. But there was. I booked a car with them landing around 9. The car rental companies in that airport are open 24 hours. I guess Thrifty isn't and they should probably write that when you are choosing/ booking a car with them but no. Because God forbid your plane has problems and it shows up an hour late that their office will close early. This ain't a small little airport by the way. The other 5 or 6 big rental car companies are open. I ask the guys next to them. "Sometimes they just decide to close early". Wtf.... Check my emails no messages, look at the desk for a number to call the number. Nope. (To be honest I did see Hertz was closed as well so perhaps they are idiots as well. I don't know. ). a girl was complaining about the same thing with price line but not my problem. My problem is I have to get an Uber to where I'm going ( Rio Grande ) which is after 10 and I do recommend if you you're in this situation which I heard from the others there that it did do it as fast as possible because it went from being $70-$95 within 20 minutes. One of the other car rental companies gave me a number for a taxi and I got it for 60 bucks which made the loss less. Why is there any number on a desk for us to call the different thrifty that her later was open not at the airport but somewhere outside of it.? Calling their number. I can't get through to a person. Emailing them. To no avail. What kind of dumb incompetence is this? The next day and I finally got through to them and they said I should've reached out to another thrifty that's just outside of the airport. How the heck would I know that? Like I'm going to call every thrifty office in the country at 10:15 at night? What If I was foreign using international rates. That's ridiculous. I meant 2 to 3 rental cars a month and I've never had to this. If your stuck on the tarmac waiting for the plane to takeoff for an hour. Try to remember to call your rental company at Ab international airport and spent 20 minutes on hold too renting then not to leave early. Sounds fun. I had to book a new reservation with them which turned out to be in the 500s compared to in the 200s for the week that I had. They refused to give me a car at the same price of course. Rented during the day at around 1:30pm and made it home took a nap and when I went out that evening I had visitors all over the vehicle, dashboard, seats, trunk EVERYWHERE, infested with roaches! I then call THRIFTY San Juan Airport to complain about the issue and they apologized and told me to go at 2am to Thrifty ponce since it was the closest to my home to swap vehicles. I went to Thrifty ponce at 1am to find out they did not have a mini van available for me and the San Juan thrifty never notified them! Unsat service!! I had to go to Walgreens and buy roach Foggers at 1:30am to eliminate them and the next morning there were still roaches moving about. NASTY!! If I could rate this review 0 stars, I would. My boyfriend and I had a very stressful flight into PR and were excited to just get in a car and head out to PR. once we got to Thriftys, we were given a car and it REEKED of urine and was absolutely unbearable. We let the employees know this and they gave us another car, only for us to find that it also REEKED of urine. We were very frustrated at this point and asked an employee to smell if the car smelled bad, which of course they said it did. We were able to talk to someone named Angel who claimed he worked here for 3 weeks and mentioning that the management were a**holes and that they only gave good cars to women with big breasts. When he told us he would grab us a car and ensure that we had a great car, he pulled up to us with the windows down in the car and the AC blasting. We were so tired at this point and just wanted to get in the car and go. It did not smell bad at first (because he rolled the windows down and had the AC blasting) but it sat overnight at our AirBnB and reaked of urine again in the morning, a THIRD car. We took this car back and asked for a refund for the service and their manager by the name of Felix was nowhere to be found and we waited a solid hour and a half for him. We left the place and called and put in a claim for a refund. We were not given a refund and were met with an email response from an employee named Angel who was a "senior operation manager" written in his email signature. Overall this place is a scam and do not EVER rent from here even if you are trying to find a cheaper option. Please go to another place and save yourself the headache. You should enjoy your vacation and not deal with an awful business like this. read more

Pre-paid rental. Manager refused to rent due to company policy. (All companies have this same policy so nothing to be done about that.) the problem was how dismissive he was. He referenced the terms of service, and when I asked to see those terms, he refused to show them to me. Come on, read the room. Here's a guy that just flew in from the west coast US at the crack of dawn and now I find out that I won't have the transportation for the week I already paid for. Let's start with the rental agent: She was clearly new, and took 44 minutes to write my ticket while the other agent wrote 4 tickets in the same amount of time. If this was the only issue, I would have been ok. However, she refused to give me any kind of upgrade and had to go out to the lot to look for a car that fit my reservation. Finally, the other woman told her to just give me the new car up. Then she told me the price, and this is where things went south. She continually tried to SNEAK insurance options into the contract telling me it was just airport fees. The car: Damaged and even had a leak in the tire. I brought it back for a switch out, and while they had five cars sitting in the lot ready to go, I again had to wait. Ramone, the manager on duty refused to give me one of the cars that were ready to go because they had a reservation for them. Fortunately the 45 minutes I spent standing around has given me enough time to write this review! Switch out (scratch that back to the rental counter): After I wait 45 min for my new car, I am then told that I need to go to the counter to redo the contract. Where I had to wait for three more people. I get to the counter and I find out they closed my contract out and had to write a new ticket. Back to the new car: car is smoked out. I give up. Nobody writes good reviews for car rental companies, so I do it when I can! When we touched down at noon on Saturday, we headed straight over here. Only one other person in line, so that wasn't a problem. I didn't get a hard sell on the insurance, so no big deal, and was notified that the FastTrak system for tolls cost $5 a day. Fine! When we headed out to the lot, there was only one person working it, but he got us our car within a few minutes. Very friendly service. On the way back, it was also quick and friendly. $70 for three days, plus $5 for Fastrak, plus $27 for the additional insurance I booked through carrentals.com, and I think we made the right choice to rent. NOTE: Updates below at the bottom of the review. ----- ORIGINAL REVIEW ------- I paid $9/day for my rental here due to my corporate discount and still wouldn't do it again. My past trips to San Juan I've always paid 2-3x this with Hertz but I think I'll go back to them rather than revisit this Thrifty location. Problems with this place: * There's no good way to find them!! When you're taking your car back and you inevitably wonder where to go because the shuttle drove you there from the airport, you might decide to Google them. WRONG! You might check your rental paperwork. WRONG! It has the airport location, which is closed. Presumably because Thrifty does not want to pay rent for airport property. I called them and nobody answered. Finally I downloaded the Thrifty app to my phone and used the Locations feature to find them. (Even the app sucks: it makes you use their own map interface instead of just plugging the location into Google Maps or Waze for you.) * A "full-size SUV" to them actually means a crossover or a hatchback. One of our rentals was to help transport 2 bicycles that were brought to Puerto Rico and the agent insisted that the vehicle was a full-size SUV when it most certainly was not. He smirked a bit and says "well here, that's full-size." Ridiculous! * The shuttles seemed out of sync. We waited 30 minutes at the airport and then 2 Thrifty shuttles showed up within a few minutes of each other. The driver did not help us load our bags. Rather, another passenger assisted with both the loading and unloading while the driver sort of looked on from the side. * They told us that we were receiving a 2-class vehicle upgrade. We ended up with a Lancer that was literally the worst car I have ever driven. The alignment was terrible and pulled us from side-to-side on the highway. The car made horrible creaking noises when you turned the wheel. And there was something rolling around inside the dash that we couldn't identify. When I told the guy checking in our return about the alignment issue, he thanked me for letting him know but didn't note it on the paper. We were charged the correct rate and they didn't try to screw us on fuel, but the experience was still ridiculous and I'd rather pay more next time and go somewhere else. UPDATE: 8 months after my otherwise uneventful rental, I find a $375 credit card charge from them. After a week of trying to get in contact (which is VERY difficult: terrible customer service!) they finally informed me that there was some damage done to the side mirror and that they were charging me after an 8 month investigation revealed me to be at fault. I am attempting to get documentation from them but this but they say it will take some time to put together. Complete bull! For those who won't read my super long review, I'll just say that there was nothing terribly wrong with my rental experience and I'm not just being irate and giving them 1-star. I know that $9/day doesn't get you much, but there's a bare minimum level of service that anyone should be able to provide regardless of price or classiness. Please do yourself a favor and pay the few dollars extra to rent your car from somewhere else. FINAL UPDATE: They've canceled the bogus $375 charge for the "damage" after I contacted the franchise owner letting him know I planned to report his location to the FBI Field Office in San Juan for fraud. We just did our first trip to Puerto Rico and rented from Thrifty. The experience was pretty decent. We were picked up by their shuttle at the airport. We did wait for 30+ minutes and had to call the rental office a couple of times. We noticed that other rental shuttles came and went several times, but Thrifty was no where to be found. Once we got to the rental office, we waited in line for another 15 - 20 minutes. There was only 1 person at the counter, so it was a bit slow. They did eventually get a 2nd person to work the counter though. Once we got the paperwork done, we were told to wait inside while someone pulled up the car. Another 10 minute of wait time. Once we got the car, the person inspected the car with my husband, which was good. So that we are in agreement of the car condition. One thing though is because of this process of pulling the rental car near the office, once we got our luggage in, we were blocking those behind us. We had to quickly pull away when still trying to figure out our bearings and entering informaiton into the GPS for our next destination. A quick tip, PR streets can get a bit confusing. We quickly entered/saved our location on our GPS while at the Thrifty location instead of trusting just the address on our return. So the return was really easy as the actual location was saved. Our return was uneventful. Since we experienced the possible slowness of the process, we determined to get to Thrifty waaaay early. So even though the return process was just as slow, there was no added stress that we may miss our flight. Overall, a fair experience... A-OK! Ok so I see why the reviews are so bad. There is just SOOOOOO much to go through to rent a car in San Juan. So yes, the rates they quote on the website are cheap. BUT they are not all inclusive and all the taxes and fees we typically see up front here in the mainland are not revealed until you get to the counter to get the car you reserved. And the process itself to rent the car takes AT LEAST 30 minutes. Or an hour if the car they bring out to you is damaged. Yeah, the car they brought us at first had a bubble in the tire and had obviously been through some stuff. SMH This was all on my mom as she wanted to rent a car for this place...I typically don't rent a car when I know I can walk places...like in San Juan. Horrible experience. First I was charged twice then when I asked to speak to a manager about it instead they canceled my reservation. I wouldn't leave the airport without getting this resolved. They threatened cops and actually called them. I called the corporate office on the spot and they had to give me my car. Now waiting for the refund for the overcharges. Don't rent here...should have looked first and saw they only had 2 stars.... UPDATE - They showed up wuth a minivan and the gas tank is empty...i was told I could take it but it may run out of gas before l get to a station....they now say they are bringing another minivan with gas...
