I rented a car from Thrifty San Juan through Expedia from July 19 -- 27. From the start, the process was full of unprofessionalism, errors, and misinformation. Upon checking in and showing the employee, Jared, my Geico insurance, he told me that my coverage was invalid in Puerto Rico ("It is not a Puerto Rican insurance) and that Thrifty insurance was "mandatory" (which is not true). This led to nearly $280 in unnecessary insurance charges. (To make matters worse, when I followed up on the charges after my final bill, another representative over the phone told me that because I paid with a debit card, I was "required" to purchase Thrifty insurance -- something that was never initially disclosed at pickup.) What's most troubling, however, is that this same employee, Jared, later contacted me via WhatsApp using my personal information from the rental agreement -- not to discuss anything related to my booking or the vehicle, but for personal and inappropriate reasons (see attached screenshots). This was not only unprofessional but a serious violation of customer privacy and boundaries. I never consented to being contacted through a personal messaging app. No customer should ever have to worry about an employee using their personal data to reach out privately after a transaction. Jared left me feeling uncomfortable, unsafe, and extremely disappointed that Thrifty has not addressed this violation despite multiple follow-ups. Fast forward to pickup, the printed rental agreement incorrectly listed my return time as 12:40 AM on July 27 instead of 11:45 PM, as shown in my Expedia confirmation. I didn't catch the mistake immediately, but I returned the car at 10:30 PM -- well before my scheduled time listed from my Expedia confirmation. Despite this, Thrifty charged me an extra day plus a $50 late fee, claiming I returned the car "72 hours late." This is completely false. I've contacted both Thrifty Customer Care and the San Juan location multiple times, and no response or refund (beyond the late fee) has been made. Between the privacy violations, misinformation, extra charges, and lack of problem-solving, this experience has been stressful and disappointing. I would strongly caution anyone considering renting from Thrifty San Juan -- double-check your paperwork, take photos of everything, and don't expect transparent communication or timely support. Thrifty San Juan is unprofessional to the MAX. Even rating them 1 star is too generous.

Thrifty car rental did have one of the best deals and that is why we went with them! When we arrived they did not have the car that we had reserved and upgraded us to a little bigger vehicle - which was nice. It was a long wait to check in. Despite being a decent daily rate on the car with all of the insurance and everything we painted close to $900 - definitely overpriced. During our trip we got a flat tire and came back to thrifty to get that fixed. We originally went to the location out of the airport as we were quickly loosing air and they said they couldn't put air in the tire or exchange the car. We went to the airport location and they exchanged our car. The first car we got was immaculate and smelled fresh. The second car we got was scratched up, smelled like urine and was falling apart. I appreciate being able to exchange our car but dang they definitely gave us the junker. Overall it was a fine experience- I wouldn't necessarily recommend thrifty but it did what it needed to do.

I rented a car for one day not even 24 hours. They charged me $200 for a ticket that I supposedly got in a city that I never even went too. They are thiefs and fraud. They couldn't tell me where it happened exactly or what time it happened I even called the city, the rmv and the police and that ticket didn't exist anywhere. A $100 rental turned into a over $300 rental. Do not rent here!!!! It's the worst company

The misspellings on their brochures are so unprofessional that it should alert anyone.

I'd give 0 stars if I could. They are dishonest, and this location (San Juan airport) is independently owned so corporate says they are limited in how they can assist. They repeatedly told me I wouldn't be charged for everything they were making me sign for because it was just a hold. They repeatedly lied and now I see on many reviews that this is just how they fraudulently operate their business

They communicate constantly. I didn't wait for more than two minutes when they showed up with the car and the keys were handed over to me and I was on my way. I kept the first Chrysler Pacifica, which was absolutely perfect brand new and spotless for one week with my family. After my family returned to the US I changed cars to a Honda pilot and that changeover was also seamless. The Honda pilot was brand new spotlessly clean, and performed flawlessly. The Team at Black tie is great. I have a large family and this service made my trip even better. Puerto Rico is great and Black Tie Car Rental is awesome. I highly recommend them to everyone and I'm quite sure that the cost was comparable to the long, hot confusing rental car agencies around Luis Munoz International Airport. I had a slow-leaking tire and had to return the car earlier than planned. In the process, I accidentally left the RFID garage opener in the vehicle. By the time I realized and returned to look for it, the car was already gone. Without hesitation, Angel went to the mechanic where he suspected the car had been taken and even brought the car back so my husband, Jorge, could personally inspect it. He reassured us every step of the way that the RFID was not in the car and treated us with genuine concern and empathy. We left feeling heartbroken, believing the opener was lost. Halfway back to our hotel, Angel called us to say he had found it on the ground at the office. That moment said everything about who he is. I can honestly say I have never seen this level of commitment to customer excellence. While rental companies in the rest of the world just give you the keys and your space number so you can get the car yourself, San Juan Avis stands alone as the most disorganized company on Planet Earth. Latin America's superpower is to make things as slow and inefficient as possible. This time, it outdid itself.
