As many have stated online, the original quotes are very low and you need to do your best to stick with them. The upsell is phenomenal for everything from roadside assistance to liability coverage. Be very careful to review the contract, decline everything possible, especially if you have coverage from your insurance or you have a credit card that gives full coverage. They use all kinds of language to try to scare you into things. Stick with the original proposal. The only thing you may want to take is the tolls as the $10 a day rate is better than if you accidentally go through a toll and receive excessive charges from their company. Be aggressive with them, but be pleasant. They are nice people in general on the island. Clearly, this is the culture of the company that owns this franchise of thrifty. This location added roadside assistance even though I declined it and then forced me to buy insurance coverage even though I'm already covered by my personal auto policy and my credit card. I rented a car from Thrifty San Juan through Expedia from July 19 -- 27. From the start, the process was full of unprofessionalism, errors, and misinformation. Upon checking in and showing the employee, Jared, my Geico insurance, he told me that my coverage was invalid in Puerto Rico ("It is not a Puerto Rican insurance) and that Thrifty insurance was "mandatory" (which is not true). This led to nearly $280 in unnecessary insurance charges. (To make matters worse, when I followed up on the charges after my final bill, another representative over the phone told me that because I paid with a debit card, I was "required" to purchase Thrifty insurance -- something that was never initially disclosed at pickup.) What's most troubling, however, is that this same employee, Jared, later contacted me via WhatsApp using my personal information from the rental agreement -- not to discuss anything related to my booking or the vehicle, but for personal and inappropriate reasons (see attached screenshots). This was not only unprofessional but a serious violation of customer privacy and boundaries. I never consented to being contacted through a personal messaging app. No customer should ever have to worry about an employee using their personal data to reach out privately after a transaction. Jared left me feeling uncomfortable, unsafe, and extremely disappointed that Thrifty has not addressed this violation despite multiple follow-ups. Fast forward to pickup, the printed rental agreement incorrectly listed my return time as 12:40 AM on July 27 instead of 11:45 PM, as shown in my Expedia confirmation. I didn't catch the mistake immediately, but I returned the car at 10:30 PM -- well before my scheduled time listed from my Expedia confirmation. Despite this, Thrifty charged me an extra day plus a $50 late fee, claiming I returned the car "72 hours late." This is completely false. I've contacted both Thrifty Customer Care and the San Juan location multiple times, and no response or refund (beyond the late fee) has been made. Between the privacy violations, misinformation, extra charges, and lack of problem-solving, this experience has been stressful and disappointing. I would strongly caution anyone considering renting from Thrifty San Juan -- double-check your paperwork, take photos of everything, and don't expect transparent communication or timely support. The wait line is horrendous. It's 2:30 am. They have one guy at the counter and we've been standing for over an hour. The line moved only half way. There's no seating at the car rental center. There are kids curled up sleeping on the floor. Definitely not a pleasant and welcoming start to any vacation. PR do better ! Try a little. Frustrating Experience (worth the read) Not a great experience with Thrifty (operated by Hertz) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I had to rent a car last-minute after Enterprise refused to accept my driver's license--despite me having driven legally in the U.S. for over six years. Thrifty was helpful in that moment, getting me into a car quickly so I could start my trip. Unfortunately, that was the only part that went smoothly. I rented the car for one day with a scheduled drop-off in Fajardo. However, I never received any confirmation email with the drop-off address or instructions. When I called Thrifty, they vaguely instructed me to return the vehicle to a nearby resort. Once at the resort, there were no clear signs or guidance about where exactly to leave the car. I tried asking resort staff and calling the agency again, but it was after 5 PM and they were already closed. With no other option, I ended up parking the car in a random Hertz-marked spot, hoping it was acceptable. I made sure to cover all my bases after dropping off the car. I took pictures of where I left it and included the phone number I called in an email to the agency--just to be 100% certain they had proof of the return and wouldn't try to overcharge me for anything. But what I didn't realize is that Thrifty apparently doesn't check their email at all. Six days passed with no response, no confirmation, no acknowledgment of my message. Then, out of nowhere, they charged me $945--with no explanation whatsoever. It's as if they assumed I had kept the car all that time, completely ignoring my email and the fact that I followed all the steps I could to inform them. I could have been in an accident or worse for all they knew--but what mattered to them most was billing me nearly a thousand dollars for their own communication failure. Totally unacceptable. After seeing the $945 charge, I called Thrifty to understand what happened. Instead of acknowledging the issue, the person on the phone was condescending, acting as if it was my fault they didn't check their email or provide clear instructions. Only after finally checking their inbox did they admit I was right--and then agreed to issue a refund. Overall, this was a terrible experience. It's really disappointing that a car rental company would show more concern for charging customers than for properly managing their cars or communicating with people who rely on them. Thrifty car rental did have one of the best deals and that is why we went with them! When we arrived they did not have the car that we had reserved and upgraded us to a little bigger vehicle - which was nice. It was a long wait to check in. Despite being a decent daily rate on the car with all of the insurance and everything we painted close to $900 - definitely overpriced. During our trip we got a flat tire and came back to thrifty to get that fixed. We originally went to the location out of the airport as we were quickly loosing air and they said they couldn't put air in the tire or exchange the car. We went to the airport location and they exchanged our car. The first car we got was immaculate and smelled fresh. The second car we got was scratched up, smelled like urine and was falling apart. I appreciate being able to exchange our car but dang they definitely gave us the junker. Overall it was a fine experience- I wouldn't necessarily recommend thrifty but it did what it needed to do. read more

First of all, we get it like to get our rental car there is probably three people in front of us. There was one girl who was hustling to help customers. Meanwhile, there were two other people acting like they were doing something finally, one of them decided to help the other girl out. After we got our rental car, which was a little beat up on the outside but functional we get about 2 1/2 miles away from the airport to grab some thing for lunch. It's hard to find to when you don't know the airport already and I made a reservation time I was 15 minutes early and I still had to wait an hour for a car that should have been ready. I recently took a trip and I rented a car from thrifty at the airport for one week. I was there from the sixth through the 13th. Immediately after I got home, I realized I had left one of my souvenir cups in the car. I called and asked them if they can check the lost and found in the car to find my cup. They told me they would check and be back to me within 24 hours. This did not happen and I called again the next day they stated the same thing and then failed to call me. I proceeded to call each day for about five days with the same exact response. I even called the sixth day and spoke to a manager, and he gave me the exact same response. Unsure how or why they couldn't have checked the vehicle in the lost and found within the 24 hour time frame, but this did not happen. It is now the 23rd so 10 days after I returned home and I called and she tried giving me the same response. She went away for like one minute and came back and told me that they checked the car and there was nothing. I know for a fact that it was in the car, so I'm guessing this is their way of getting rid of me. Oh, they had also told me multiple times that they had no way of contacting the actual location. Well, I'm just making sure that everyone knows how their customer Service dept works. Don't expect any service from them after you have turned in your car. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because the rental itself went well. The company needs to figure out how to connect their Service dept to their on the ground business. This place is a joke and I see why it has a 1.5 rating. Wish I had seen this before I made a reservation. The vehicle we rented was fine it got us from point A to point B, but the staff does a terrible job of explaining things. I got a parking ticket which I was honest about and brought to the front desk when I was returning the vehicle. Instead of simply informing me that I could pay the ticket on my own the staff member charged me a $50 admin fee on top of the ticket cost. In what world does a $50 admin fee make sense when you could've just explained to me that I can pay the ticket directly. On top of that they refuse to take the admin fee off the total cost. Thrifty/Hertz car rentals has been the worst experience. They are a scam company that prey on individuals and families that don't travel that often and are trying to save money. They charged $1500 in fees!!!!! and lied about the condition of the car upon check-in. I was following google maps and the car got stuck in the mud about 2 hours away from the Puerto Rico airport. I told Hertz roadside assistance to return the car to our apartment since it was just dirty and I got a ride back with a friend. They agreed but then stopped answering my calls after the tow truck got to the car, and they took the car straight to the airport. Since then, I have received a $250 cleaning fee, a $300 towing fee, a $164 gas fill-up fee and an $823 damage fee. THIS IS A TOTAL OF $1500 IN FEES!!! The itemized receipt they sent me (after I annoyed them for it) said that the damage cost was to disassemble some of the car and detail it. I have pictures of the car when I left it for the tow truck, and there are no damages on the car. And they haven't returned any of our items that were left in the car, which they considered trash. I asked for the car to be returned to me because it was dirty from the mud and I could have sprayed it down with a hose and a rag. When I called up the trip insurance company that was sold with the car rental, they said that they don't service Puerto Rico. When I called up the customer service department they said that there wasn't anything that they could do to remove the charge, but that they are sorry? I can't dispute the towing charges because I don't have the tow truck driver conversation in writing. I called the tow truck company and they answered with "don't call us again" and they hung up. The Hertz customer service supervisor is always out of the office every day that I call or has just barely left. Every time. It has been almost a month now and I am still trying to get in contact with Hertz and find a supervisor, but it seems like their strategy is to put things off so long and make life so difficult that it isn't worth their customers time to fight it. Which makes sense because Hertz is appealing to families that don't travel that often and are trying to save money. My recommendation: Don't ever go with Hertz or Thrifty. They are a scammy company and this isn't a unique situation amongst their customers. Just read the other reviews online. read more

Location across the airport where we were supposed to pick up was closing and literally had 1 woman handling things. 2-3 dudes behind the counter seemed solely focused on some IT repair and 1 woman outside was playing on her phone the whole 2.5 miserable hours we spent there. She said she's the only one and is doing the best she can, and I did feel a bit bad for her. 2 girls before us who had apparently heard nightmarish things about Thrifty overcharging all these hidden costs, and other scary stories, were very thorough, sending 1 car back for busted tire, so it took like 1.5 hour. Thankfully, our turn was a bit more efficient and we got a clean car, unlike many roach-infested ones we've seen on the reviews. The 2021 Hyundai Elantra we got was perfect midsize for our 7-day trip, and everything went well. We tried to return back to same location a Saturday later and was redirected to airport because they were closed on Saturday. It's an island mindset thing. But unlike our dread, airport dropoff was surprisingly efficient, no underhanded trying to charge you for stuff, and the young rep told me a resounding "No" when I asked if there would be like secret charges later. We will see - I'll be watching my credit card transactions very carefully since one reviewer said there was a $400 charge a full year later(!) By the 2nd day we found roaches in the car and immediately called to get another car but no answer and we were across the island to drive back up. I've called days after until i reached a representative and the videos. I was told i would hear from management. This thrifty get's one start from me cause front of house customer service is decent and attentive as they can be. But I had a minor incident the bumper and a parking stopper. I didn't buy their insurance cause Expedia sold me their Generali brand insurance and they ask for a documents like an in incident report and an estimate of repairs. Trying to file a claim with them was a hassle as well. Wasted half of my Saturday to deal with all this to arleast get another car to try to enjoy the last two days of my 4 day trip. It's been over a month I'm trying to get this handled and no one has actually provide me with any documents or an actual phone call. And I've contacted everybody I thought I could. Nothing they just keep giving me the run around, maybe like one email to let me know they received it and then, crickets. I will never rent from this company again. I Got a reservation which I reserved 6 months earlier. The trip trip was for the family of 9+. So we rented one of those 12-16 passages vans. It was around $1050.00 or so. After a long trip from the states, upon arrival tired with babies and elderly in the party, the older of the four attendants, approached me from the counter and told me that the reservation was there but I had to pay and additional $550.00 dollar cash. It was insane. Imagine we were tire, exhausted and now this gentleman want more money. I explained that the reservation was set at the national online center and all was set. He insisted that I should travel with extra money, asked how much money I have in my bank and all kind of other questions of personal manner. All this in front of other customers. I insisted I was not going to pay more. After a while he took his celular and pretended to call his superiors about this manner saying the man only have $1,050.00. In the mind time, the other Thrifty employees were suspiciously laughing and looking to the other way. It was obvious...they were trying to take another traveler thru their personal cleaners. Finally when I told them I was going to another company, Budget, just across the hallway, he said , well is ok, the boss said is ok...that happens 4 years ago. For my surprise I when back to Puerto Rico last month, and I could not imagine who was there....the same individual, old, dark skin. with tide kink hair, probably continuing with his personal tourist cleaner. Wow. STAY AWAY. Waited an hour in a line to speak to someone. No explanation of all the fees or the insurance added on. They should have asked "do you want to go through your own insurance, it will be $35 for an extra driver, we added on prepaid fuel". Just took our card and gave us a receipt. Able to get one car and then waited at least 45 minutes for the second key. Kept asking them what was happening and they said that the woman at the counter where we paid (which was about 3 minutes with our heavy suitcases - we paid extra for getting a car "nearby") was in our account and he couldn't get into it. Well .... call the woman and tell her to get out of the account!!!! Meanwhile people who were behind us in line are already driving away. Then we waited in an excruciating line for the guys to take detailed photos and videos of the car. Everyone was pissed. All in all we spent approximately 2.5 hours getting our godamn rental cars. Total waste of our vacation time. We are heading back to the airport now and super nervous what they will throw at us when we return. Usually I would give a shout out to the people who are just working there, moving to cars, making a living but even they were unfriendly and not helpful.
