It was founded by husband and wife Jeff and Melissa Sapsford and their business partner Stevie Treichel. Jeff previously managed the Sunset Beer Company craft beer shop in Los Angeles and also worked for Norm's Beer and Wine in Vienna (VA). The Sapsfords teamed up with Treichel to open their own bottle shop that focuses on craft beer and small production wines (especially ones that are locally produced). Melissa focuses on the store's gourmet goods program and helps with community outreach programs. The shop opened in the Potomac Yard section of Alexandria to much local acclaim. In February 2025, the partners announced that they would be moving to a new location in the Del Ray section of Alexandria. The reason for the move was to offer expanded parking and to get away from construction which surrounded the original location on Richmond Highway. Department of Beer & Wine closed in March 2025 and reopened at their new location the following November. I recently visited Department of Beer & Wine while I was staying in the DC Metro area for a few days. I was looking for a place that had a good craft beer selection, and Department of Beer & Wine came highly recommended on Yelp. The shop is a little on the smaller side, but nonetheless they have an impressive selection of craft beer and sustainable wines. They even have 20 beer taps so that customers can purchase a crowler of fresh draught beer, cider, and even craft soda. I recently transitioned to a sober lifestyle, and fortunately the shop had a decent selection of non-alcoholic craft beer as well. I ended up picking out a six-pack of "Brevet IPA" by Atlanta-based Halfway Crooks Beer. I wasn't familiar with the beer or the brewery, but it had a good rating on Untappd and I decided to give it a try. I'm glad that I did because it was really refreshing! Department of Beer & Wine is an excellent battle shop and I highly recommend it to any craft beer or wine afficianados who are in the DC Metro area!
