The old lineoleum floor when you enter are still there as are the old time signs above the deli and bakery. The baby blue theme is a constant and they have Mr. Clean on staff to make sure everything is spotless. Even the old conveyor belts are cleaner than the newer ones at the spiffier "we have everything and then some" grocery stores! Their burgers are hand formed and you can see and taste the difference. They wrap their grapes in plastic atop of styro trays, yep just like they did back in 1972. Go here for a deli sammie and you will never go to one of the chain places again. Since it's in Hinsdale they have upped their offerings to include lots of gourmet items (even for your pampered pets) like grass fed beef, organic produce, Boars Head in the deli, etc. I love shopping in this store. They have local produce year-round, even in winter, and some of the specials are really good. I'm really happy to have bulk spices available, and they have things here it's hard to find elsewhere (more kinds of organic cheese than Whole Foods, and they regularly carry organic parsnips and affordable organic citrus, for example). They had some local plums that were SO DELICIOUS that I've never seen anywhere and will definitely be looking for again. I also really like that you don't have to buy produce wrapped in plastic (cucumbers; bell peppers). The grab and go pizza is really tasty, and I'm a big fan of Bakehouse, who does their bread. They have cronuts every Friday. They even sell alcohol (which I don't really buy but maybe you do). They have a bunch of prepared foods and coffee, and they host regular events like a bring-your-own craft night, or a presentation on Mexican cuisine. Very cool. Service is friendly and the store is well-lit, with lots of parking and a small dedicated parking section right by the doors. Checkout is at these weird desks that don't really work (I guess there wasn't room for a real counter or a conveyor?) Overall, prices are somewhat high, and the canned good selection and frozen produce selection is fairly small. They are AMAZING! I could share any number of stories but Ive settled on this one for today.... I was sitting in my car about 30 minutes before they opened. The workers and what looked like delivery people were moving about their business in and out the doors. The Owner, Dennis, came over and invited me in. He knew that I was most likely there for deli items and volunteered that there was someone back there who would open up for me. I go back there and sure enough there was someone back there.... But he was performing a full pre-start break down and cleaning of the deli! I was about to swerve and busy myself with other stuff but he was right on it! asked me what I needed and got me situated with a smile and a genuineness that you can't fake. As I made my way to the checkout, I see Dennis waiting there to ring me out personally. As I'm walking out of the store, he runs out and stops me to introduce himself properly. As a small business owner, that level of service and willingness to stop everything for one customer means something.
