Moving here to Vancouver from the States 18 months ago, I had no idea how the Canadian, or the…read moreprovincial BC medical system worked, nor did I have a GP here for myself or my family. I was SO lucky to be referred to Dr. Brian Yau here (and lucky that he was taking new patients, too). In the past, when I lived in Seattle, it took me a while to find doctors and dentists that I "clicked" with. I always felt that it takes a team effort - me and my doctor, - to be most effective in my staying/being healthy. So it's critical that I'm comfortable with my doctor to talk openly with him or her. It's in my best interest to "click" with him/her. And it's critical that he/she be knowledgeable, receptive, accessible and helpful. Bonus if the office staff is friendly and works with me and my schedule. Dr. Yau and his office staff are all these things, and more. They've fit me in the Dr's schedule ASAP when I needed to be seen. Dr. Yau is working with my WA doctors to follow up on past conditions and provide continuity of care. He takes the time to patiently go over all the many ways the system here differs from that in the States, and helps me navigate my way here re: blood work, referrals to other medical specialists, etc. He's also been incredibly helpful for my daughter, too. Another bonus here: Dr. Yau is incredibly prompt. (I always get irked when kept waiting and waiting, appointment after appointment, at doctors' and dentists' offices. It's as if my time isn't respected at all. Sure, once in a while is understandable but when it happens regularly, it really rubs me the wrong way). Dr. Yau has always seen me within 5 minutes of our appointment time. To me, that is yet another sign that he cares about his patients. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Yau and the office staff here. My only caveats (which are admittedly minor): no free parking or validated parking here, and no wi-fi in the office (bummer). Otherwise, this practice here is stellar. I consider myself super lucky to be a patient here.

Then I met Dr. Nguan and she is one of the most kind hearted Dr's I have ever been to! It took me years to find a Dr that would take on new patients and to luck out and find the most amazing Dr in the city is just amazing! The reception is great, they are friendly and helpful. After being to a lot of clinics with extremely rude receptionists this really tips the scales in their favor! They always work with me to find an appointment that will suit my schedule which is really important for me since I don't live or work close to the office (but it's worth the travel!) I believe one of the locums I saw Dr. Bergman now works in the office as well so if you are looking for a male Dr he is also amazing!

This is not a regular doctor's office, but part of the UBC students' training. About 10 doctors,…read moreone nurse (for pap exams), one dietician are here, to supervise the students. As a result, each appointment starts with the student coming in and asking about your symptoms. She may perform small exams as she fees fit, then go confer with your doctor. Then, they both come in and offer prescriptions or whatever is necessary. I like this because I get a thorough inspection and the student usually narrates what she is doing (feeling the lymph nodes, etc.). I happened to go twice a month apart, and the student was different. So, this setup is not for people who want to see one doctor quickly and get out. Apparently, they are funded by the government by how many patients are registered there, as opposed to the usual offices being reimbursed per patient visit. This is why they ask patients to always come to them, and not go to walk-in clinics. I have been able to book an appointment with my doctor the day I call. If he is not available, they offer an appointment with another one of the doctors. The official address lists it as on Oak St, but it is deep inside the hospital complex, so it's easier to get to from the parking lot entrance on Heather at 29th Ave. Follow the sidewalk on the north side. It's the building after the first crosswalk. Go up the ramp on the corner.

My daughter is very comfortable and likes coming as well. Sometimes the exams take a bit longer because of the teaching setting, but as a plus I can always get in within a day or two to see a doctor, even if not my own another is on call on Saturdays. They are now located on Broadway at Willow and there is parking available on the roof.

The recepitonist didn't identify herself as Kingsway Medical Clinic on the phone. The receptinist remanind silent on the phone until the patient asked whether she has reached the right number. This was not acceptable. How could the receptionist ask the patient to call half an hour later because she was busy? If the patient had some issues to check with the doctor and the call was delayed, was the receptionist take the responsibility? Dr. Jackson Chu was marvellous. Other than his professionalism, rest of the clinic was running like a business. Some doctor even referred patients to get prescriptions from the drug store next door. Actualy, both the medical clnic and the drug store were connected via a short hallway though with different main doors. No wonder many good doctors working in this cilinic left.

This is a nice place. The good thing is that you get a choice of doctor's to see. Receptionists are generally professional and kind. Dr. Kim Chen is outstanding. He's young and understands modern medicine. Dr. Teri Tien saw me when he was away and she snapped at me; probably because she was super stressed and new at the practice. She left the room as I was talking. Dr. Eddie Wong is a different story. He treats the clinic like an assembly line and is not understanding of patients. + close to Metrotown and all it's pharmacies. + young doctor's leave's this place with room to grow. + kind receptionists + state of the art software. No more paper. - Dr. Wong detracts from the place. - place looks a little run down. - they generally have a time limit on each patient. It can get rushed where the doctor's will shoo you out the door in the middle of talking.

But overall, its not bad. The older Dr. Lee rarely comes in and now its his son who is the main doctor here. Also, its a good thing that this doctor is young. Although Dr. Lee does speak…read moreCantonese, if you're looking for a caring, compassionate, and patient doctor (I don't see who wouldn't), Dr. Lee is not the one for you. Yesterday, my mom and I took my grandma to see Dr. Lee. We had to wait 1.5 hours, including 10-15 minutes in the patient room (though my grandma did come into the office 15 minutes late) just for a 10-minute meeting with him. I heard from my mom that her friends have to wait 2 hours. That is just ridiculous. Shortly after my mom and I arrived, the waiting room started filling up with more people 'til the whole room was full. The receptionists need to do a better job of organizing patients' appointments and spacing enough meeting time with the doc so that there isn't an overfill. Accepting "drop-ins" as well doesn't help! When we finally saw Dr. Lee, I was really appalled by his lack of care, patience, and attention to my grandma. All his movements were really brisk and loud, like typing (more like tapping) the keys on his laptop, sifting through papers, etc. I could tell that he didn't want to be there. I scowled at him though he didn't see my expression (nor would he most likely care). According to my grandma, he only wants to address one health problem per patient visit and unfortunately, my grandma brought up another health problem first. Though toward the end of the visit, my mom and I told Dr. Lee how we think my grandma may have a mental health disorder and that we were advised by a mental health worker to get him (my grandma's family doctor) to make a lab referral to get her checked, he said that we should handle one health problem at a time (without making eye contact--how rude!) and to come back next time. HELL NO are we coming back to wait an infinity to see him!! After my mom and I insisted about my grandma's mental condition, Dr. Lee said that we just need to give the mental health worker's number to him. He left it at that with no further explanation and left the room. His apathy toward my grandma (and his other patients) is disheartening. I'd never want him to be my family doctor. I wanted to scream in his face. My mom said that when she saw him 30 years ago, in the 1980s, (when he was working in Vancouver's Chinatown), he was a much better doctor and actually made eye contact with his patients. Don't know what happened to him now. Patient fatigue? Growing hatred toward his job? Even his wife, one of his receptionists (he has two) was brisk and didn't seem to care much about what the patients had to say. She interrupted me several times and seemed really impatient. Dr. Lee is not a doctor to be trusted but sadly, it's hard to find Cantonese-speaking doctors in Vancouver as they all seem to be filled up with patients. He seemed to handle everything really hurriedly, didn't make eye contact with my grandma, my mom, nor me, and wanted to be out the door ASAP. From what my mom and her friends have said, he is an impatient and uncaring doctor. One of my mom's friends switched doctors as a result (I'd too if I was in her position). Dr. Lee has failed in his duty to be a doctor. If you can avoid him, please do. But if you have no choice but to see him, I warn you that he may ruin your day.
